Re: Gus tried to hurt Emmy and now we have to make a horrible decision.
Posted by alexlynn7 but rather than put him down, could you surrender him to a rescue organization? maybe he just needs a home without children. there are also animal sanctuaries that will take animals who have been aggressive.
I was going to suggest something of the same
SO sorry you're going through this

Today will be a hard day buy you will get through it. You are doing what's right for your family. A mother must protect her child.
Gus will pass away painlessly. Then he can go romp and play with other doggies in grassy fields or relax in the sun free of the aggression that troubled him. I am a firm believer in doggy heaven.

this is an honest question for those saying to rehome the dog.
Would you want an aggresive dog who has tried to attack the owner and child in your home with your children? Am I missing something. I know no one want to put their dog down, I know some people have a crazy attachment to their animals, but if its attacked once, why would you take a chance?
Because this isn't normal behavior for a lab and with proper training he might be a perfectly fine dog for another situation.
Cujo's behavior wasn't normal for a St. Bernard either.
I don't think any of us have a right to offer suggestions to another poster when they fear for the safety of others.
and I'm gonna go with the vet on this one. if the vet understands, I am sure there is a reason.
ETA: what difference does it make if it's 'normal' behavior for the breed?
If I had to drop kick my dog away from my son's crib, there would be NO OTHER RECOURSE in my mind. sorry. this is insanity.
leave her alone. say a prayer for her dog. and call it a day.
ITA! This is hard enough for the OP.

I couldn't agree more. People come before dogs. PERIOD. This dog wouldn't spend another minute in my house with the behavior the OP described.

As much as i'm sad for the dog, I have to agree, as well. If my dog EVER did that to my baby- I wouldn't think twice about getting him out of my home. I'm so sorry you are in this position.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for putting your child first. I also want to applaud you because this is an extremely difficult decision, but I know that you also want to protect other prospective adoptive families from possible aggressive attacks.
Lots of to you.

You're right...it ISN'T normal behavior for a lab, I should know, I have one and he is amazing with my son. But the main problem with your statement is that with training he MIGHT be a fine dog for another situation......do YOU want to take him and find out for yourself??????
TO the OP....I am very sorry you are in this situation, I hope you can make peace with the fact that you are doing what is best for your child. I am sure you have exhausted all of your options.

so sorry to hear. I would do the same thing.. or maybe there is a family with no children that want him? His he aggressive to adults too? Is he an older dog or young?
I'll be thinking of you, Gus and your family. That must be hard. Glad he didn't hurt the baby.
He is aggressive to ALL people and no rescue places here in MI will takehim. We called and emailed about 37 of them. The only place *might* have an opening in 2 months. That's just not going to work since Joe works and i'll be off maternity leave soon. As it is NOBODY will watch her at our house and all family activities have to be somewhere else since my family is TERRIFIED of him.
I read some of the responses, and I think you are doing the right thing. It has to be hard, I'm sorry, but am glad your duaghter is OK.

My heart breaks for you --- I'm sorry you are going thru this right now.
As for justifying your actions -- you DO NOT have to justify anything.
You exhausted so many options and tried to work with this dog....do not let ANYONE make you feel bad.
I am a huge animal lover...but baby trumps animal, I don't care how much I love the dog.
Having to kick a baby away from the crib for fear of what he would do to the newborn....my God I can't imagine how that was for you.

Don't feel like you have to justify your decision anymore
AGREED!!! We all know how hard this is for you. Don't let anybody make you feel worse than you already do. Putting a dog down regardless is an emotional time.
I'm actually stunned by some of these replies. I understand animals rights and all that, but honestly girls, lets just be there for our fellow friend instead of making her feel worse for her decision.
I agree completely! Let's support her, not question an obvious hard decision.

Biting can be normal behavior for a dog...of any breed.
Sometimes humanely putting an animal down is better then surrendering them to a pound to sit in a cell for months on end with little contact which is horrifying for a social/pack animal.

Yes, but the OP does not trust that the dog can be rehabilitated, nor does anyone else, and is not comfortable rehoming the pet, which I cannot blame her for.
Either way, she did not ask for our opinions, but for our support during this difficult decision.

Re: Gus tried to hurt Emmy and now we have to make a horrible decision.
Lindi-my thoughts are with you today-I know it is hard to put a pet down.
You are doing the right thing. You don't get a second chance to protect your child. You did everything you could to try to keep Gus a part of the family and when it was bad, to save him.
I understand some people suggested training, but I think from what Lindi said, she does not have the time to give this a chance-it takes a second for this dog to do something that could be devastating to this child or another person. Training takes weeks. Lindi doesn't have weeks when the safety of Emmy is in play.
I know Gus will be up in pet heaven with my kitty!

just because it isnt normal doesnt mean it isnt the dogs personality.... just look at human beings.... it may not be normal behavior to kill people, but there still is that occasional psychopath out there
to the op.... i cant imagine what u are going through...i am the owner of a lab and a golden.... their behavior definitly changed when ds #1 ws born, more with barking... it actually got so bad that one has a shock collar because he would bark at his tail hitting the wall when it wagged... while not even remotely the same, it was a decision we had to make for our own sanity and i can tell u if one of them snapped at any member of this household we would be doing the exact thing u are doing....

I am PERPLEXED by these responses, absolutely perplexed Even the most superficial scan of Lindi's posts on this thread would indicate that a)her family is in imminent danger, there is no white knight who's going to appear "quickly enough" b)dozens of alternatives have been researched & contacted, and ALL have rejected the possibility of re-homing Gus c) Lindi has STRUGGLED with this decision and did not come to it lightly...
Where's the compassion for this poor woman and her family?
I agree with other posters, unless YOU PERSONALLY ARE WILLING TO TAKE THIS DOG INTO YOUR HOME this thread calls for NOTHING BUT SUPPORT AND HUGS.

For the posters questioning the OP decision. If you feel so strongly that this is the wrong thing to do. Why dont you offer to take the dog?

and this is the million dollar question. I tend to think it is simply easy to judge someones decision when it was not your child that was almost injured by a crazed dog (that is the image I have in my head from reading her synopsis of the incident)
the OP tried everything that she could. She should get nothing but support and hugs, why is that so hard for people
