Im so very sorry you are going through this. I can imagine what a heart wrenching decision this was for you to make...

For the posters questioning the OP decision. If you feel so strongly that this is the wrong thing to do. Why dont you offer to take the dog?

and this is the million dollar question. I tend to think it is simply easy to judge someones decision when it was not your child that was almost injured by a crazed dog (that is the image I have in my head from reading her synopsis of the incident)

the OP tried everything that she could. She should get nothing but support and hugs, why is that so hard for people Chat Icon

EXACTLY
It's great to SAY that MAYBE the dog can be rehabbed....but in all honesty, not all or many of them can be.

And I don't know ANYONE who would say "Oh, maybe this dog just needs some intensive training. Let me bring her into my home with my small children, or no children at all, just because the possibility exists that this dog MIGHT turn out OK."

Please people, let's get real here. If that were my dog and he did that to my child I'd probably kill him with my bare hands, let alone let him remain in my home for one additional second.....

Now we're making a mockery out of this woman's torment and THAT'S just cruel.

Because this isn't normal behavior for a lab and with proper training he might be a perfectly fine dog for another situation.

She might not but there ARE others who would. THe trick would be to finding those people quickly enough.

I am PERPLEXED by these responses, absolutely perplexed Chat Icon Even the most superficial scan of Lindi's posts on this thread would indicate that
a)her family is in imminent danger, there is no white knight who's going to appear "quickly enough"
b)dozens of alternatives have been researched & contacted, and ALL have rejected the possibility of re-homing Gus
c) Lindi has STRUGGLED with this decision and did not come to it lightly...

Where's the compassion for this poor woman and her family?

I agree with other posters, unless YOU PERSONALLY ARE WILLING TO TAKE THIS DOG INTO YOUR HOME this thread calls for NOTHING BUT SUPPORT AND HUGS.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Also, normal behavior for a lab, I'm sorry, but again, I have a lab mix, and while it may not be normal behavior, MY dog is a skiddish and nervous dog, and what might set her off, would not set off a "normal" lab. You cannot make such a broad generaliztion, I'm sorry!

To the OP, honestly please do not think you have to justify anything! I am going through a very similar situation, and it's one the hardest things to do ...and just to reiterate the the ppl questioning the OP....MOST places will NOT take an aggressive dog, and an older one, and B. most ppl do not want to take on an aggressive dog, if you're one of them, please let me know know, bc I'm in the process of attempting my best to find one and I'm hitting every dead end possible!!!

Also, the thought of the dog possibly being aggressive to someone else would be on my head, not anyone elses. Everything is so much easier said when you're not in the situation...

ITA with this. It takes weeks to train a dog and not all can be trained. It takes 10 seconds for something horrible to happen. That is a gamble I personally wouldn't take and I think Lindi did the right thing and we need to now give her many Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because she feels bad enough.

I also couldn't re-home an aggressive dog like that-God forbid something happened to another child.

A vet doesn't just put an animal to sleep because someone is sick of it (yes, a kill shelter would, but I am talking a family vet who knows that the owners love the pet). If they are doing it, there has to be a darn good reason.

I totally agree with LB. You don't want to be saying shoulda woulda coulda after the dogs bites off half your childs face or someone elses. I know people who have had this happen. You have saught out other options, there are none. You do what you have to do. Chat Icon

That's terrible, and I feel for you.

We have 3 dogs, and one hasn't taken to the baby as the other 2 have. Can I ask what kind of dog and how old he is. Ours has really been terrible...

I am so sorry...you are in my thoughtsChat Icon Chat Icon

He's a 5.5yr old yellow lab that has been aggressive to other since the day I met him and when Joe and I were dating there was a time when it was me or the dog, however, sending him to hunting school, neutering him, and being the Alpha helped. Now, though, he tried to get through the crib and then tried to jump into it while barking, hackles up and the most aggressive I have seen him. I had to kick him in the chest to get him off the crib. I know it's the right decision, but it's still hard since with Joe and I he's so greatChat Icon

Edite to add he's 130lbs and ALL muscle so I can't control him physically. Trust me I wish we had other options, but since the aggression is to men, women, adults, and kids/babies nobody will take him and I can't stand the thought of somebody else hurting him, and or him hurting somebody else.

Lindi we dealt with the same decision a few years ago with my dog (who lives with my parents). We contacted NUMEROUS places and no one would take him because he was aggressive towards adults, not children.

We ended up getting a very skilled trainer who was only minimally effective.

I am so paranoid to have him around DS and I watch him like a hawk when we are at my parents house. I hate going there because of it. He has growled and snapped at DS and I am at my wits end.

Don't feel like you have to justify your decision anymore Chat Icon

Exactly- MY BIL has a dog that has bite numerous people and refuses to see he is very dangerous. Honestly, if I have to chose my child over a pet, so be it. Chat Icon

obviously i don't know the specifics of your situation... i don't even know what type of animal Gus is... and i'm terribly sorry that you are even put in this situation...

but rather than put him down, could you surrender him to a rescue organization? maybe he just needs a home without children. there are also animal sanctuaries that will take animals who have been aggressive.

I completely agree with all of this. I have a dog and wouldn't put that dog down because she was our first baby, too. Look at your options before you do something you may possibly regret.
Good luck.

please read the whole thread, she DID look at her options and on the advice of a trainer and her vet, determined that putting the dog to sleep was the "right" choice Chat Icon

o see him run and play with the dogs was a sight of beauty. His wife was ONLY worried about the other dogs and NOT the aggression. SHe feels they have enough experience and training to handel it if it is an issue. They ar emostly inside dogs and you can tell they love their dogs with everything in them.

The trainer believes almost all dogs can be retrained and that Gus just needs a home that is less stressful and childfree.

OMG, I am SOOOO glad to read this!!!! I will Chat Icon they feel they can handle him and that they can give him a good life. Please keep us posted.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank God people who are up for the challenge of a tough dog do exist, it's just about timing and luck to finding them. Hopefully God was on your side, so you do not have to bear the burden of putting a beloved pet down. I was Chat Icon for you and your dog, I will keepChat Icon that this works out (or at least the rescue back up).

Maybe the space, combined with the 2 other dogs will make him feel like more of a part of a pack and that, combined with their experience, will make him behave better as a pack member.

I am so happy for you and your dog that I am in tears.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
