I just want to clarify that "Brick, NJ" was devastated in the storm as well. A portion of Brick is in between Mantaloking and Seaside. It is also where FEMA has located one of their shelters. Brick borders Point Pleasant, Manasquan, Mantaloking AND Lavalette. Its a huge town that is an integral part of the Jersey Shore, so regardless if Romney went there or not, "Brick, NJ" is a legitimate place for a politician to tour in the wake of Sandy. The part of Brick by Seaside had large fires in addition to flooding.
I grew up in Point Pleasant, so you can take my word for it.
Thank you! Seriously I'm in tears that I'm being told brick wasn't good enough to go too. Tell my friends whose homes are not in the ocean and are ashes.. Brick is in shambles and it breaks my heart that people don't care bc we didn't have "jersey shore" to make it well known.. My moms fence that flew threw the air and broke her windows apparently wasn't tragic enough..
Brick gets forgotten as part of the shore. I am a Boro girl, so I get it too. People always think of Point Beach. Brick got slammed during the storm. People might not also know that a lot of the people who live in the area year-round (as well as most of the area's working class people) live in Brick or Point Boro. I don't think she meant it like that, people who don't know the area might not have ever heard of the town. But I have! Much love to Brick!
Thank you! I live in Brick. It is devastating here. I feel like I am in a war zone. And there is no truth to Romney being here. Christie was here and Obama as well. Trust me, Romney was not around...

Some key points on how FEMA helps families were have suffered a natural or man made disaster:
FEMA provides three different types of assistance: Housing Either money to rent temporary housing, or a place to live in a government housing unit if there's nowhere to rent Money for home repairs to cover damages that aren't paid for by insurance Grant money to replace uninsured homes that are completely destroyed
Medical Assistance with medical treatment and prescriptions for disaster victims who suffer from medical conditions (whether they're related to the disaster or not) Dental bills Funeral expenses
Property Storage, transport, and in some cases, replacement of personal property Assistance with moving expenses Rebuilding and repair of public infrastructure, including roads and bridges, sewer lines and public buildings Debris removal
thank you for this...but my point is many are saying they aren't getting this. I just had a friend over from east rockaway to do laundry, charge up etc. He has been doing volunteer work all over and his neighborhood did not fare well...he has spoken to many people and tells me the general consensus is that people are saying they are not getting the assistance they need, they just today saw a fema truck in the neighborhood. I see the same in my newsfeed on FB and from friends of my own as well. What's going on? If so many people are complaining of NOT receiving assistance how do we keep track? how are they held accountable for a timely response in disaster since our tax $$ are paying for it? I'm genuinely curious bc I want to know why we see so much talk of relief efforts in the news and yet so many saying they see nothing of it.
How are they supposed to do the above listed within 6 days?? They are JUST getting started with applications. I don't know if the system is efficient or not, but I would imagine getting anything would take a long time in disasters like this.

I do not know exactly how FEMA works but I do know that if you put in claims for damages they will give uninsured people money for their losses or will cover what insurance does not. As far as the immediate help I can not speak on that . I know they are affiliated with the Red Cross which many people have been saying is not doing things in a timely manner so you could be right about the immediate help. I am thinking more of the people who have serious property damage and loss and the fact that FEMA will help them with money to rebuild.
This is why we have donated to local people/organzations that have been set up by the areas effected bc there is so much red tape with Red Cross and people are very unhappy about how they earmark who and what gets money.

I've read that Christie had to ask for everything that has been done for NJ, not that Obama was the one to know what had to be done. While I commend him for not delaying things that my state needed, I feel he should of known what to do, not been told. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe that's how government does things. I'm not one to say I know everything and anything about politics, and I'll be the first to tell you that I don't think Romney would have done much better. Honestly, I feel government as a whole is disappointing, and I feel I have never backed someone fully, and I'm saddened that with such destruction that I'm not proud of the msg our president has put out, and equally as that I'm not proud of what Romney has said either. And I'll also say my moms nuts, she may just have seen someone who looks like Romney, I have no idea, I assumed she was right bc he was in PA today haha. .
I'm just curious, and want to make sure I'm reading this correctly, you feel that Obama should have just known exactly what was wanted and needed by NJ (as well as other states effected) and that it is up to him and not the local governments to decide what resources are most needed?
Would any president know exactly what to send/dispatch either before or after seeing the devistation? I would think that local governments are more knowledgeable then federal.
To the OP, no, the hurricane has not effected who I am going to vote for.

No. If it did though, could you ellaborate as to why?
Just wondered as I heard someone today in Subway saying that they are definately not voting for Obama from the way the hurricane after-math is being handled.
That is so bizarre
IDK, I have heard quite a few people say the same thing.
I'm not saying I agree or care either way - but I don't know if it's such a bizarre thing being that I've personally been hearing it quite a bit from a wide variety of people these past few days.

They even have bags of food they want you to take to give to neighbors. Sandwiches, fruit, water, milk, coffee and OJ. That is lunch. Dinner is a hot meal. Tell your friends to go!! And copy this info and paste it on your status. It appears no one is getting the info. Please share this with anyone you know that can use the help!"

this is the area I was speaking of. My DH is from the Rockaways and a lot of his friends/family are conservative but since the hurricane and all the damage they have they no longer feel comfortable voting for Romney bc of their need for FEMA aid.Funny you should mention the same thing!

Thank you!! This is exactly what I wanted to post. CC asked and BO came through. Lots of red tape that would have extended the time it took to get many things accomplished. This is called bipartisanship... CC knew what his state needed and he went to the president to let him know what his state needed and BO made sure he got whit.
And Romney wanting to put relief back into the hands of the state is just absurd to me. What about poorer states that do not have the money or funding for such things?? What then happens to those people?
It might be difficult to compare apples to apples but I think (and truly hope it is the case) that this is being handled WAY better than Katrina was.

Not interested in a candidate who wants to reduce FEMA funding.

Cedar Creek is one of six fixed meal sites on (the others are at Nickerson Beach, Christopher Morley Park, in Hauppague, Riverhead & Mastic. These more permanent sites are centrally located on large sites (ie parks, the H. Lee Denison Bldg). Cedar Creek had been under-utilized, because people didn't realize it was there. The Red Cross also has mobile food stations- they've been in each community in the Rockaways, Long Beach, Island Park, Amity Harbor, Lindenhurst, Babylon, multiple locations in Brooklyn (Red Hook, Sheepshead Bay, among others) multiple locations in Queens, many parts of lower Manhattan, Staten Island & City Island. Plus they have a large shelter at NCC, which is housing hundreds of people. They are most certainly not throwing away food, if it's left over, it's delivered elsewhere. The info on FB was not accurate.

Re: Has the hurricane make you rethink who you will vote for?
I may be alone in this but I dont expect Romney to visit nor do I care that he didnt. Nor would I care if Obama visited for that matter.
Christie hit the nail on the head...this isnt about politics. Obama is the current president and maybe he should survey the area as he is currently making decisions that impact areas that are devestated. But to determine if I like someone because they visited or not...no, not at all. What would romney do? He is not currently ina position to make decisions about aid or anything else, so...if he was to show it would be for...politics. Honestly, I think it would be worse if he DID show. He did express his support, etc publicly, but what exactly was he supposeed to do? Now is not the time for politics, sorry.
I dont really feel this sways my vote either more for my candidate or against.

Not rethink. I am voting for Romney before and after this. However it has made me realize how important this election is for me. My hometown was underwater, houses on fire, Obama has not responded in the way I feel was warranted. The fact that Romney visited my hometown before the president of the united states, reinforces who has my vote on Tuesday!
I wasn't aware that Romney came to the East Coast after Sandy. I thought he was in Ohio?
Yea. Wouldn't this have been huge news?
Came to Brick, NJ. My parents met him. He actually was in Yardley PA today as well. As I live in yardley..
Interesting. No mention of him being anywhere in NJ on his calendar in the last 6 days. I'll say it again, this would have been huge news especially when Chris Christie said he didn't give a damn about him coming there.
ETA:Romney Calender
AGREED!!! I'm pretty sure this would have made bigger news...but non offense to "Brick, NJ" but if Romney was going to visit devasted areas, wouldn't he pick a more nationally known area like Hoboken or Seaside Heights???
In addition, to those who say the president should visit the badly devestated areas, why??? I have no idea why you would want or expect this? Why have your police and officals deal with security rather than help YOU get things back to normal.
I am literally floored by those who think our government hasn't done "enough"...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! No matter what your party, all levels have done fantastic. 100% better than Katrina. And what more do you want done? I am so irrate over this.
I think it is sorta ironic that those "Romney" supporters are complaining of not enough help yet Romney's plan accounts for LESS government involvement. I'm sorry, its so contray to what you are saying.....
I am disgusted by those thinking not enough is being done....just disgusted.
I'm sorry but what has Obama done that is fantastic during this hurricane?? Christie has done a fantastic job, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned.
Ummm...he ordered more gas to our region, they set-up the FEMA centers, deployed national guards the day of the storm, etc.
As noted, all levels of government have been amazing. I said that originally.
What more in your heart do you think Romney would have done?????
Like I said...you want more from Obama (aka the government) yet you are going to support somebody/party that wants to cut-off and lessen our "reliance" on the government funded programs and such???? Extremely ironic.
THIS!
It's like Obama should have waved his magic wand and had everything back in its place just like that.
Romney wants to close FEMA, because he thinks spending on emergency spending is immoral in times of deficit.
To answer the question, no it has not made me rethink who I will vote for. It had made my vote even more concrete.

Oy! He doesnt want to CLOSE FEMA, he wants to cut spending. There is a difference. The concept is being taken out of context too. Obama has declared states of emergency in some places where the issues have been milder (per some media reporting). Weather its right or wrong I cant say cause I never serveyed the areas hit by earth quakes, etc, but it appears to be what he was talking about.

This, but I will add that it made me like Christie more than I had in the past. I think his response has been phenomenal and I might consider voting for him in the future.

Re: Has the hurricane make you rethink who you will vote for?
I usually vote third party since I live in a blue state, but I'm nervous people will not be going out tomorrow to vote, so I will vote Obama.
