Oy! He doesnt want to CLOSE FEMA, he wants to cut spending. There is a difference. The concept is being taken out of context too. Obama has declared states of emergency in some places where the issues have been milder (per some media reporting). Weather its right or wrong I cant say cause I never serveyed the areas hit by earth quakes, etc, but it appears to be what he was talking about.

I know people who are very grateful that FEMA is here right now.
I NEVER want to be on the receiving end of FEMA, but I'm glad it is there if GOD forbid.

Still Voting for Obama. Can't vote for someone like Romney we have different views and I can't support him. But I did want to clarify the my father in law (Harbor Police) said Obama was supposed to come to NY after NJ but was told Not to by Bloomberg because it would take away police and security and EMS. He said he is glad he didnt cause we have too much going on in diiferent areas to provide extra security to the President.

"New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) said President Obama offered to visit the city in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but Bloomberg told him that everyone has “lots of things to do” instead. "
Bloomberg said he didn’t want to “diss” Obama and was flattered by the offer. Obama is scheduled to visit New Jersey on Wednesday, where the hurricane made landfall. The mayor said that trip would represent the whole region.
“What I pointed out to them is we would love to have him, but we have lots of things to do,” Bloomberg said at a press conference. “I’m not trying to diss him. But I know he had planned a trip to New Jersey, and I said that is fine. It represents the whole region. ... He has got a lot of things to do, and I was flattered that he offered to come.”

If your home had been destroyed by Hurricane Sandy I highly doubt you would take any FEMA reduction lightly.

Obama coming to NY would have been a logistical nightmare, trying to coordinate security, motorcades, etc. It would have been a mess.
In his own words, Romney pointed out that sending disaster relieve to the private sector was "even better" than turning it over to the states. So how would that work? "Here, sir, get your family into this helicopter. That'll be $49.95 per person, plus tax and tip for the pilot."

I have been more than respectful here, and being that you dont know my situation or my family's situation at the current time, I would respectfully ask that you refrain from telling me what I would think "if...". I was speaking in general "your" terms since you were quoted I see that you thought I meant you specfically sorry about that.
WHat I meant was *I* feel that people currently in need of FEMA's assistance would be unlikely to vote for someone looking to cut FEMA spending. That to ME is what is logical.
Hypothetical:
My house was destroyed.
Should I vote for the guy looking to cut FEMA aid?
I think almost ANYONE in this situation would say it would not be in their best interest. But again I do not know your personal situation or what you would do, so I cant speak for you personally, just drawing my own conclusions based on my own opinion and logic.

Instead of thinking, in the federal budget, what we should cut, we should ask the opposite question, what should we keep?"
I think it's safe to say he's done a flip flop.
The strange thing is the states that get hardest hit by disasters are red states. I hope they're prepared to fund their own disaster relief.

It's left me undecided.
I was following the debates, researching their opinions on certain topics. I wasn't really for either one of them completely.
4 days without power, now I cant stop watching the news about our area. I can't pull myself away from our local situation to focus back on the presidential race.

I was leaning towards romney but still not 100% convinced. however, after this storm, i do think obama has handled things extremely well and I cant imagine what people would go through if FEMA was cut back. It definitely has made me reconsider.
Edit to say I just spoke with someone whose house was destroyed in hurricane Katrina (they live out of state)....and he informed me that as much as FEMA sounds like a great thing when the time comes to collect you get next to nothing and that FEMA isn't the one that helps you out...it's rec cross that gets you food clothing and shelter etc. I'm fortunate to not be really impacted by sandy but I wonder what others are experiencing in regards to FEMA

I really have to keep defending the city, FEMA, Red Cross, etc. People are saying that they're not getting help. I have seen with my own eyes Red Cross trucks, National Guard, electrical crews EVERYWHERE. The scope of this disaster is such that they can't possibly get to every house. It's just FALSE that no one is helping. The devastation is just so widespread that it would never be enough.
People are complkaining about gas but the governor and homeland security worked VERY quickly to help. It's not going to get better over ngiht. The way people are talking, they're saying the gov't has done nothing and it just isn't true. Certain of my ILs are spreading a newws story saying Bloomberg refused help from the national guard. If that's true then someone else has been parking hummers and amphibious vehicles all over the area and we need to be very alarmed.
I honestly believe that all government agencies have done a GREAT job in the storm. Is it ever enough? It's not. How can i ever be enough when SO many people lost everything?
I hate it when people call this "our Katrina". The devastation aside, this was handled SO much better on every level than Katrina.
It made me dislike Romney more. His BS photo op "relief event", and then his comments about privatizing FEMA. No effing way.

Exactly. I'd think twice about voting for someone whose positions change (literally) whichever way the wind blows.

Christie hit the nail on the head...this isnt about politics. Obama is the current president and maybe he should survey the area as he is currently making decisions that impact areas that are devestated. But to determine if I like someone because they visited or not...no, not at all. What would romney do? He is not currently ina position to make decisions about aid or anything else, so...if he was to show it would be for...politics. Honestly, I think it would be worse if he DID show. He did express his support, etc publicly, but what exactly was he supposeed to do? Now is not the time for politics, sorry.
I dont really feel this sways my vote either more for my candidate or against.

AGREED!!! I'm pretty sure this would have made bigger news...but non offense to "Brick, NJ" but if Romney was going to visit devasted areas, wouldn't he pick a more nationally known area like Hoboken or Seaside Heights???
In addition, to those who say the president should visit the badly devestated areas, why??? I have no idea why you would want or expect this? Why have your police and officals deal with security rather than help YOU get things back to normal.
I am literally floored by those who think our government hasn't done "enough"...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! No matter what your party, all levels have done fantastic. 100% better than Katrina. And what more do you want done? I am so irrate over this.
I think it is sorta ironic that those "Romney" supporters are complaining of not enough help yet Romney's plan accounts for LESS government involvement. I'm sorry, its so contray to what you are saying.....
