But the fact is that radical Muslims are the ones that are responsible for killing thousands of lives, destroying new york's skyline forever and throwing this country into an economic downward spiral.

I'm just curious about your remarks regarding the economy. I'm not an economist by any stretch - but wasn't aware of a US economic crisis that was caused by 9/11. Obviously it affected NYers (unemployment was up, companies & people leaving NY, etc).

i don't remember 100% b/c I was still in school at the time and not yet in the job market but, my DH was working in finance at the time and i remember it did a real number on the stock market and remember many friends in finance losing their jobs after 9/11 (my DH included).

I am so against this mosque being built anywhere near the WTC site that I just get SICK thinking about it. I find it not only extremely insensitive but politically foolish. Of all the things to put up near Ground Zero, it has to be a MUSLIM SHRINE?? WHAT THE F%^&%? Why not a Jewish temple? or a Methodist church? Why a MOSQUE? Seriously - i would support it but not anywhere near thw WTC site. Figures this was ok'ed by Obama, a Muslim himself. This country is going to shitter with that man ruining this country. I am so disgusted!

I was also working in lower Manhattan on 9/11, and personally knew several people who died that day from FDNY. I find it highly insensitive to the families and those affected by that day to build a mosque 'near' ground zero.

Liken it to building an amusement park or a Mcdonalds at/near Auschwitz - it's just plain disrespectful in my opinion, where such a tragedy occurred. While we're at it, let's build a sushi buffet at Pearl Harbor. Then a KKK meeting hall at/near where MLK was shot in Memphis. Chat Icon

I am all for religious freedoms, but this is just something you dont do, out of respect for those families who suffered.

But this is NOT going to be a mosque. IT is going to be a community center. A community center open to anyone, of any religion.
Like a YMCA. Would anyone oppose a YMCA opening there?
This community center will be "sponsored" (for lack of a better word) by the Muslim religion, just like a YMCA is "sponsored" by the Christian religion.
It will be a place for kids to play basketball. It will be a place for people to learn how to cook.
It will be a place of community involvement in a neighborhood.
How can people condone the tourist trap of Ground Zero, which I think disrespects every person who died there, but be so adamantly against a group of people who want to better the community?
I just don't get it. The blind hatred that some people have is just disgusting. And it is hatred that caused the 9/11 attack in the first place.

I'll bite...I am not ignorant...instead, I carry the images of 9/11 in my head every day. I buried my cousin and a good friend because of the massacre that took place.

My husband worked in Tower II and would be dead had fate not worked that day.

So, no...I don't think it is a really good idea to build a mosque in that area. The men who steered those planes into the towers, the pentagon, and into the field in PA were terrorists...Islamic terrorists...killing in the name of their God....so yeah, I am a little biased...just a little.....

So should a Christian church not be built anywhere near an abortion clinic that was bombed by a "Christian" terrorist?

I think most people from NY personally know someone who was a victim of 9/11.

It is NOTHING like those other things, your comparison is EXTREME and out of line and really makes no sense.

Obviously you are NOT for religious freedom b/c that is exactly the point of America, TO BE FREE, its their RIGHT to practice their religion. I have no clue why its even up for discussion. Everyone should be free to practice their religion and I am saddened by this argument, I really am. I just wish people could be more open minded and realize that people practicing their religion close to ground zero does not equal terrorism or have anything to do with it.

Horrible EVIL people caused 9/11, not everyday muslim's who want/need to pray to keep themselves happy and centered.

What about the families of Muslim victims who were killed on that day? They lost people they loves as well...and now they're being punished and discriminated against because they share a religion with a bunch of radicals.

That's like calling me a Nazi because I'm German.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

I don't have any issues with the Mosque at Ground Zero for a few reasons.

We allowed to practice religious freedom under our constitution. Are we going to start picking and choosing how we bend the laws this country was founded on?

Wasn't the property bought by somebody legally? If someone feels so strongly that the Mosque shouldn't be placed there, why not outbid the person that bought it? Do it legally.

And here's something to consider... many people believe erecting another tower just asks to be a target. Wouldn't it be BENEFICIAL to place something of significant religious significance near this site... just for the sake of protection? Are radical muslim terrorists going to try to bomb the new WTC knowing there is a Mosque right there? Hell... i'd say put the Mosque even closer (but not on the footprints or memorial obviously).

And if you are going to say that the terrorists who would plan another attack are not the same people that would give a **** about this Mosque... then you shouldn't be upset that this Mosque is going up in the first place as these parties are NOT related to each other!

Well you said it....

can you at least explain why? DId you read any of this thread?

Do you understand that its likely Muslim people died as well in those buildings?

Like someone else said, are all Germans Nazi's?

I guess ( and this is NOT directed at the poster I quoted) I simply do not get how people are so so so sheltered in their little worlds that they dont see we are all one...when we will we stop? Its not a home for wayward radical's to plot...Its a place for people to worship God, the same God we all do.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

I personally am very in favor of it.

I don't condone ignorance, but I don't think it's fair to ask everyone who feels negatively about this cultural center to explain themselves. Sometimes, things like this just evoke a bad feeling within ourselves, and we can't rationally explain it - that doesn't make it right or wrong, it just is.

Yes, i did read the other posts in this thread and came across several posters who shared the same view as I do. I think it's insensitive to the families of the victims for reasons that are obvious and have already been stated. Why must those of us who disagree with the building of the mosque be considered ignorant simply because of our opinions. The word ignorant implies uninformed or lacking knowledge about a particular subject matter. In my case, I am completed educated and fully informed of the issues. That being said, I think building the mosque is wrong, insensitive, and unreasonable... and anyone who thinks i'm ignorant because of it is merely intolerant of the opinions of others.

I really do not understand what this mosque has to do with the people who hijacked the planes on 9/11. Maybe I'm being naive, but I REALLY don't get it. They claimed to be acting out of their faith, but do those of you who are Christian think that the Christian extremists who've MURDERED DOCTORS who perform abortions had anything to do with you and your faith? Because I see it as no different. Extremists are just that and just because they claimed that it was in the name of Islam shouldn't mean the rest of the Muslim community should pay the price for it. I'm sorry, I just don't see how they're related.

I agree with this 1000%.

Well clearly then you are ignorant because you are obviously lacking the knowledge that this country was built on the idea of RELIGIOUS FREEDOM!!!

ETA: This entire thread blows my mind. How do people not see that what our country is founded on is what you are all up in arms about?

Someone made a comment about how it is going against Americans to build the mosque. Well I am pretty sure that Muslims are Americans too.

I am happy to read a lot of the responses too but was surprised because the media has said majority of people (including NYers) are against it. Doesn't seem that way when you read this thread.

Not all sects/movements/etc of one religion acknowledge the others. Those who practice Orthodox Judaism do not consider what I practice (Reform leaning towards Conservative) as Judaism at all. Any radical of any faith may see those who would not do the same as them as blasphemes.

Personally, I don't like the idea of the mosque at that location. It is unsettling to me. Im not going to sit here and justify why. I don't need to read 5 pages about religious freedom. I know enough about religious freedom when 6 million of my ancestors were murdered in the ovens not all that long ago.

I'm not necessarily against this mosque- but it's not being built to worship "the same God we all do".

I'm a Christian. Muslims believe in worshipping one God- and so do I. But they are not the same God. I'm sure any Muslim would feel the same way.

Re: Having trouble understanding this - Mosque at WTC site

I have no objections with the mosque being built where they are intending....after all its not at the location where the towers stood, however, since there has been so much publicity, one would think that maybe they should build some place else?
If so many NYers are upset by this, wouldn't it just be a little more logical? Just makes me think that if it is built, it may heighten the chances of vandalism?
Is it just me?
