HELP! Little bird fell out of our tree! UPDATE at bottom
We have a little bird who obviously fell out of the nest and can't fly, on my front lawn
There was a robin feeding it before, but now it's just sitting in the rain and it's making me sad.
I know I'm not supposed to touch it...but I feel like I should move it underneath the tree...at least out of the pouring rain.
I feel so bad for the little guy
PS - It's not a super baby bird...it's full on feathers and can hop....it just can't fly.
What do you think I should do???

Re: HELP! Little bird fell out of our tree!
Thank you!!
I def. didn't want to touch it.
I'm hoping it's just newly out of the nest and that's why the mommy robin was still feeding it.
I just hate how it's all huddled in the rain

Re: HELP! Little bird fell out of our tree!
He is a fledgling. They can't fly yet and it is very normal for them to hang out on the ground near the nest. If you saw a momma bird feeding it before then definitely leave it alone. However, if it is in danger (like a cat is nearby) you can pick it up and put it in a tree or a tall bush by where you found it. Just wear work gloves. If it is still there tomorrow and you do not see the mother again, you can bring it to a vet that works with a wildlife rehabilitator. We have had this happen a number of times by our house. Hope the poor baby is ok!
ETA: Feel free to FM me if you have any questions

I hope he doesn't drown out there in this rain!
I really want to move him under the tree

Well, I knew I should have taken him inside, or put him somewhere safe last night out of the rain...I woke this morning to find the little birdie dead
I feel aweful

I am so sorry I feel so guilty cause I told you to leave him but that's what I was told by many vets. How terribly sad.

Don't feel bad... it's quite possible something was wrong with him and the Mom pushed him out of the nest.

Don't feel guilty!! I was always told the same thing..don't ever get your scent on a baby animal or else the mother may reject it.
My mommy-bird (lol) instinct was nagging me all night that it was just too cold and wet out there
I'm the one that feels guilty!!

Actually, that scent thing is a myth. The momma will still come back for it. They tell you not to touch them because if you move them too far the momma may not find them and if you spend too much time with them they could imprint on you and not be able to survive in the wild.
I guess we should go with our instincts though

Aww Rachelle --- you did the right thing, there was nothing you could do for the poor birdie.
