Re: Help settle a debate between DH and myself
Probably the solar panels, but mostly because I don't like vinyl siding-I'd rather re-do the shaker shingles to something I liked, eventually,
If you love the siding though, I'd go with that, b/c you'd end up putting siding on the other house eventually, but you don't necessarily have to add solar panels to the already sided house.

Solar - but depending on how new the system is. If the solar system is dated, I might go with the curb appeal
Same.

Definitely siding. I hate the look of solar panels.
This. Honestly, a house with solar panels would actually be a deterrent for me. Not only are they ugly as sin (I have about 5 - 7 houses in my neighborhood with them including the house directly across from us and they are an eye sore) but it's just something in the way if we need to do something on the roof.

Only solar panels if you can't see them. I would never want them if they're visible. I think I'd ultimately want the new siding though.

Re: Help settle a debate between DH and myself
For me, solar panels have more curb appeal than new siding. Solar panels extend the life of your roof, and make your house more energy efficient (blocks the blazing sun from hitting the hottest part of the roof all summer). To me, solar panels are for you, siding is for everyone else to look at. Then again, I got my solar panels 8 years ago, at the same time I got new siding...

If the siding is that bad, siding, but if you could still go with it for a couple years, than solar panels.

Re: Help settle a debate between DH and myself
I'm getting solar panels for my house and I'm really excited about it. But that said, if we were selling I'd go for new siding. Everyone loves new siding; not so much with the panels.
FWIW you could do both. We're buying them outright but there's no immediate OOP expense. The savings just gets deducted from the bill and it's basically done.

Re: Help settle a debate between DH and myself
First I would want to know if the solar panels were rented or owned. Solar panels cost about $16,000 to install, new siding is about $20-30,000. Before installing solar panels you must have a new roof installed otherwise you run the huge risk of having major leakage issues. So I would want to know the ages of the roofs too. A roof is about 11,000. For us, gas plus electric runs about $1,800 per year. Let's say the house with the solar panels are owned, with a new roof. You would need to save $1,800 for about 11.1 to 16.6 years before you would pay for the siding. Now you may get some tax credits for the solar panels, so you should factor that into your calculations.

Siding. it keeps energy costs low, and while solar "already in there" is appealing, you can qualify for many government grants and programs that would eventually make solar more cost-effective The amount of $ you would be saving in energy costs because of newer siding as opposed to solar energy would outweigh the costs IMO

cheap electric. you can use the savings to pay for the curb appeal. plus the solar panels will continue to save you money into the future.
I was gonna say curb appealing but I like this idea!

Re: Help settle a debate between DH and myself
Siding. There are so many incentives to go solar you can get them yourself for a little out of pocket. Solar panels are placed where they get the most sun. If your house is facing south they would be in the front.

Well, it all depends on the solar panel agreement and how old the roof is under it. If the cedar shake is messy, then the roof may be too. That would be my first concern. Solar panels are great to save money on electric. If you have a home, electric could be quite costly if you don't have gas heat/cooking.

Curb appeal. I don't care how much I'd save on my electric bill, I would never buy a house with solar panels. They're hideous.
