hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
i was offered the hepatitis B vaccine for Olivia last week in the hospital after she was born, but i declined it until I spoke to my ped. I spoke to him and understand why they give it, but want to think about it before I make a decision. I was wondering how many of you did, or did not give it to your child, and the reasons for both. TIA

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
I am pretty sure that your child can not attend school without it when the time comes, so they say it's better to just give it to them as a newborn and get it over with.
I have yet to hear of someone not doing it.
Just wanted to add, we waited for DS first doctor's appt to get it and did not in the Hospital.

I declined it and still have. He does not need it now and the chances of him getting it are slim to none. If he should ever need a blood transfusion dh will give him blood as they share the same type.

i don't think that it's a requirement for school is it??? Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease, not a communicable one, so unless my child is sexually active in kindergarden lol i don't see why it would be a requirement. i mean, we all went to school without it...........

I deferred at the hospital and the nurse said it was a good idea since you don't know what brand vacine your ped will use. It is better to get all done in same place if you are going to do it.
I have completely deferred the vaccine - I did not see the need for it at this time.

Me too. DS had it at either his 1 or 2 month visit, I forget.
ETA: My reason for deferring it was because he had been in the NICU for a week being poked and prodded and I just wanted to give him a little bit of a break.

it just doesn't seem medically necessary right??? i mean, i see the rationale behind it, i just don't know why they need to have it at such a young age...........was there any other reason besides that that made you decide to decline it?

What are the benefits of the hepatitis B vaccine? The hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) protects your child against the hepatitis B virus, which can lead to liver damage and even death.
Hepatitis B is generally considered an adult disease because it's known to be transmitted through unsafe sex and shared needles. But many who get it, including children, don't engage in these "high-risk" behaviors. They're either infected at birth or they contract the disease from close contact during childhood with others who are infected.
Hepatitis B is highly infectious. An estimated 800,000 to 1.4 million people in the United States have the virus, and 20 to 30 percent of them acquired the disease in childhood. Many of them never feel sick and don't know they have it, but those who become infected as children are more likely to have long-term health problems such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. About 2,000 to 4,000 Americans die from hepatitis B-related illness every year.
The HBV vaccine was introduced in 1982 and became part of the recommended immunization schedule in the United States in 1991. Since then, the incidence of acute hepatitis B has dropped by over 95 percent in children and adolescents, and over 75 percent overall. The number of new infections per year has declined from an average of 260,000 in the 1980s to about 43,000 in 2007, with the biggest decline among children and adolescents.

No other real reason besides I didn't think my children would be in contact with anyone with it at a young age. In addition I have never had the vaccination so why should my one month old.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
I got it for DS. At 1 month, he got the second of the series. No problems at either time. My pediatrician feels strongly about keeping to the vaccine schedule.
I got the vaccine myself as a teenager. I know many people with Hep B... ACTUALLY, wikipedia states that 1/3 of the world's population has Hep B.
I'd get a Hep C vaccine if they ever figured it out. The 2 are very contagious (vs. HIV which is not) and live for a long time in blood and fluids on surfaces. There is considerable precaution about it being spread by saliva... even after being on a surface for long time. I'd worry about that any time I took my kid into a public place (think daycare, public parks, ect).

My boys were preemies and in NICU for a week. We were told by a neonatologist that it is a pure social experiement. It was decided they would take this"captive audience" (newborns) and see if they could eradicate hep b. It doesn't hurt the pharmaceutical companies either. We declined it and they still have not gotten it.( they are almost 2)

I had him get it at birth. I feel that the doctors who set these schedules know more than me so I go with there suggestions.
ETA: DS doc at the hospital was his current Ped.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
We didn't get it. I may have her get it one day, but I felt its a lot of different chemicals to be injected into such a new baby. There are a lot of other vaccines I felt were much more important.
I recently was sent this site

That is just heart breaking.
And this is exactly why I research everything before giving my ped the ok.
He also doesn't believe in the schedule and isn't a fan of the power the pharma firms have over our lives. He believes in most shots but he questions the need for more than a few of them

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
I declined it in the hospital and have still declined it. It is the only shot I have declined. DS WILL get it but as he is not in daycare/preschool, etc. I do not feel it necessary at such a young age. Next year I will have the ped give HepB.
