Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
We did because we knew it was standard procedure and it was only beneficial for DS.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
My ped said to wait until his office visit, but I think that is honestly for billing purposes. If he told us to get it in the hospital, I would have. DS received it at his 2wk well visit.

I have yet to hear of someone not doing it.
My understanding from my ped is actually the opposite. He said that almost everyone declines it in the hospital and will get it a few months down the road at a well visit. I asked some friends and they were told the same thing.
I meant to not get it at all or years down the line. We waited for his first doctors appt and did not get it at the Hospital.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
This is one of the last vaccines I give on my alternative schedule. Neither myself, my husband or anyone in my family who comes in contact with them has hep B. DS #1 has his shots because he is now in school.
I didnt give it to either at the hospital because they weren't going to be shooting heroin or sleeping with a prostitiute anytime soon.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
We did it at the hospital and our ped (who was not at the hospital) later said she recommended the same.
I have a lot of friends from college who are now doctors and I get to hear all kinds of horrible stories about people (children and adults) getting illnesses that were once eradicated by vaccines and even some dying from them. I know there are risks of bad reactions, etc., but vaccines also eliminate diseases and I support that goal so we go with the recommended schedule, as does our ped. It's not just about my baby's health, but also the population, though I will say that vaccines protect her too, which is a growing concern as more and more people choose not to vaccinate - that choice puts my DD at risk and it's my choice to protect her.

Because it is recommended bu the American Academy of Pediatrics <you know, the people that make medical decisions about children based on tons of medical, fact-filled research> we got it
You know, the ones Pharma firms wine and dine every night
Yeah exactly. I'm in the health care field and I surely don't take the AAP's word or anyone else's word for that that matter. I try my best to do my research and make decisions I am comfortable with.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
I'm reading what everyone has posted on this thread and I'm pretty surprised. All of you that saw no reason not to - you saw nothing even remotely disturbing about pumping all of the ingredients in that vaccine into a one day old baby? I can understand the logic behind many vaccines but, honestly, I don't see any logical reason why a one day old baby would need this vaccination unless the child's parents have hep B. Also, how long have they been doing this for - like 10 yrs max? And, I think they stopped for a while when there were concerns about thimerisol. Not enough time for me to feel comfortable with this.
I got the shot for DS at one year and will do the same for DD. B/c maybe, at that point they could POSSIBLY be bitten by a child that has hep B-that is the only reason my ped could come up with for giving it to my child that young (no one in the immed fam has hep b and my DC are not in daycare). My ped gave me no problems AT ALL with delaying it as even he couldn't really argue why it was necessary for my one day or one month old to have it. My understanding is that this was started mostly to 1. prevent babies from getting hep b from their mothers (or another caretaker) and 2. benefit those who leave the hospital and never go to a ped again.

I deferred at the hospital and the nurse said it was a good idea since you don't know what brand vacine your ped will use. It is better to get all done in same place if you are going to do it.
I got it at her first office visit for the above reason...she was 3 days old.
I did this with my 2nd DC. For my first I didn't know any better and let the hospital do it.

Re: hepatitis B vaccine in newborns
DD had it in the hospital. I spoke w/ the PED before hand and he told me he would do it for her first visit or I could have the hospital do it.
