This is akin to the kid in the playground stamping hid feet saying "I know you are but what am I" wah, wah, wah. Seriously! The GOP is taking a stand on people paying more $$ on taxes and punishing ACTUAL PEOPLE WITH HEALTH ISSUES BECAUSE THEY TRIED TO DO SOMETHING GOOD. Sounds like a fair exchange to me Chat Icon

It's a shame the 9/11 heroes are getting screwed. But the Democrats have themselves to blame for this one.

A shame? How would you feel if you couldn't get medical services during the time they USED YOUR LIFE as a bargaining chip?? It's a disgrace and they should ALL be ashamed of themselvesChat Icon

I agree w/you and I cannot bring myself to engage w/the PP because of the ridiculousness of her post.

I'm sorry, but I need to respond to this one.

When is the GOP going to stand up and do the right thing on this one? Tit-for-tat is not acceptable when trying to assist the first responders who spent months inhaling toxins and did everyone in this nation a favor by serving down there.

Gillibrand did the right thing in bringing the bill to the floor without attaching it to an appropriations bill or the tax cut provision. The 9/11 bill, as with all others, deserve to go to the floor of the Senate and be voted on based on it's OWN merit.

For the GOP to vote down THIS bill b/c of their opinion on ANOTHER issue, is not only morally reprehensible, it is HYPOCRYTICAL.

How many times have we heard McConnell and Kyl and the other GOP senators wail and moan about attaching non-germane amendments to approps bills and other pieces of legislation??

ENOUGH of this nonsense tit-for-tat.

Stand up, do the right thing and LEAD!

And that goes for the Dems too.

But on this one, the blame lays squarely at the feet of the GOP in the Senate.

I cannot agree more.. I don't care what your political affiliation is.. providing funds 9/11 responders is something that should be done.. its not on the table for bargaining or negotiations.. we collective whole should back it regardless of what school of thought we fall into..

I am tired of how often I hang my head in shame at our Government. What happened to " of the people, by the people and FOR THE PEOPLE"? Until lobbiests get their hands out of the pockets of politicians we will continue to have a group of people supposedly "representing us" that only looks out for itself and it's best interests. It just sadden and angers me.

Tit for tat is unfortunately the political climate we live in. The GOP felt the right thing was extending tax cuts to millions of struggling middle class americans. Why don't the Democrats lead in this regard?

You can't just blame one party. Blame them BOTH.

Also you do realize that the GOP now has enough seats to fillabuster because the Democrats basically EFFFFED up the last two years and gave the GOP some momentum (and seats back).

The GOP had no interest in helping the middle class. They were going to block extending unemployment benefits if Obama and the democrats didn't keep the tax cuts for people who make above 250K a year. Obama wanted to keep those tax cuts for people making under that amount.

While many people agree with you, I am tired of hearing how the Democrats effed up.

If it wasn't for the Democrat extension of unemployment benefits, I know a few people - myself included - who would have a lot of trouble paying their bills.

Obama's legislation has funneled money directly to civil service projects to create *real* jobs. He also is an ardent supporter of small business tax cuts, which helps create jobs. It takes time, which apparently the country is not willing to give him.

We gave Bush EIGHT years, but the Dems are supposed to clean up his entire mess in two. (Yes, they've been in power in Congress since 2006, but two of those years were the Bush era.)

I'll bet 99% of the people who are against health care reform have never had to go without health insurance, as I did recently, for a few months. Never had to put off going to the doctor because of the bills that would mount. Never had to live in fear of an accident or ailment that would mean a trip to the ER. When you are without health care, you are ONE ailment or accident away from financial ruin. It is HIGH time that health insurance became affordable and not tied to either your employment status or that of your spouse.

NO ONE on this thread has said anything against tax cuts for the middle class. It's the wealthy. In this climate, let's save it for people who NEED it. If the MIDDLE CLASS does not get their purchasing power back, the economy will never recover.

I'm not a blind Obama supporter, but so far I agree with his agenda, which Congress will certainly shiit all over.

Obama's unemployment extension is flat out ridiculous. 99 weeks? That's almost two years of paid benefits. It almost pays to stay home and do nothing (while collecting free money). I don't blame the GOP for wanting this canned.

But regardless, the way it stands right now the GOP was going to agree to keep the unemployment at 99 weeks if it meant extending the tax cuts.

Like I said, our DEMOCRATIC president supports these tax cuts for all americans, yet his fellow Democratic politicians are against it.

I'm not speaking on her behalf.. but perhaps the number associated with identifying what is wealthy (250K) is what perturbs people. And yes, middle class needs to get purchasing power back.. and I think there should be a better way to identify what is wealthy based on geographic location and family size etc.. it should not be a flat rate.

Why does everyone think the bush tax cuts only apply to the wealthy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Growth_and_Tax_Relief_Reconciliation_Act_of_2001

The reason why the GOP voted against the 9/11 benefits is because the DEMOCRATS voted against extending the Bush era tax cuts, something OUR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT was going to support.

The bush tax cuts lower taxes for EVERYONE. Not just the wealthy. Yet the idiot democrats in congress want to tax the s**t out of everybody.

Take a look at the link I provided above and explain to me how those tax cuts ONLY apply to the wealthy. Those tax cuts reduce taxes for EVERY income bracket.

It's a shame the 9/11 heroes are getting screwed. But the Democrats have themselves to blame for this one.

I can't wait till the 2012 elections which will pretty much guarantee the GOP will have both the house and the senate. The Democrats have had their chance since 2008 and they have done absolutely nothing (except forcing healthcare reform down our throats).

You're right- the tax cuts don't only apply to the wealthy, BUT the GOP blocked the vote for the tax cuts to be extended only for the lower & middle classes and for them to revert back for the upper earners.

The entire prosperity of the last decade was in large measure a sham fueled by credit extension against the loss of real wages by the majority of Americans. The upward spiral in the cost of housing created the illusion that the average American homeowner was becoming rich, although the reality was that their equity stake was an ever decreasing portion of their massive monthly mortgage payments. In the end when the house of cards collapsed, it was the wealthy who were bailed out with taxpayer dollars which, compounded by the fact that they hadn't been paying their fair share of taxes under the Bush cuts, we now find ourselves with massive deficits. It should be remembered that Bush found himself coming into office with huge Government surpluses thanks to the fiscal stewardship of the Clinton administration. These tax cuts for the wealthy were sold as 'giving the American people their own money back'. Clearly then there is no current justification for continuing to give the wealthy their money back since there is no money left to give them. They got it all and more with the middle and working class picking up the tab for their financial bailouts.

People should really appraise themselves of certain facts: that the "rich" are not the productive class of this economy. They have not and do not create jobs in America. They amass enormous profits from exporting American industry to third world countries. Any tax cut extension will only fuel continued loss of jobs and effect to create a huge structural underclass of unemployed and unemployable. The "rich" were the creators of the financial 'weapons of mass destruction' like CDO's derivatives and securitization of subprime mortgages which brought about the delusion of prosperity but ultimately wreaked havoc on the economy. Yet they have amassed enormous fortunes and walked away unscathed from this disaster with their bonuses intact and larger than ever.

While the rest of us mostly pay the normal income tax rate, those with holdings worth millions pay 15% as much of their income comes from dividends and capital gains, that is the way the system is set up.
Most people think those with incomes over $250K are getting salaries in that range, and that is possibly so, for professionals like doctors, lawyers, CPAs, and other skilled professions, so maybe the tax exemption should be extended to those with incomes exceeding $500K. What most people do not realize, is those who have salaries of $1million or more, also get stock options, and that is where they get the compensation that they only pay the 15% on. Then there is another class of 15% percenter's, the fund managers. People with incomes in the hundreds of millions, who only pay the 15% tax, because most of their income is from capital gains.

1% of Americans control 33% of wealth and the top 10% collectively control 71%. More than 90% of stock, bond, and mutual fund ownership is distributed among the same 10% of Americans. Over 50% of capital income is earned by 1% of Americans. CEO pay has skyrocketed while income in the middle class stagnated, then eroded, then declined. Unions became victims of the Republican propaganda war further destroying working blue and white collar income and the ability to negotiate those wages and employment security. Jobs were shipped off-shore to further the profits of those steadily earning more money. Average hourly earnings peaked in 1972, 38 years ago, and declined since. While jobs and wages were shipped offshore Americans were rewarded with easy credit and the encouragement to indebt themselves while savings and its security declined to the lowest percentage among western nations. Federal income tax collections declined steadily, pointedly including the vast reduction of marginal tax rates to enrich the already wealthy and increasingly wealthy wealthy.

Yeah, actually, I'm patently aware of the change of seats in the Senate and know exactly what it means, since I used to work there. I saw it when it was under the control of the GOP and when the Dems took control. What is going on now is a mockery of what used to happen in that chamber.

I can't explain why the President did what he did on tax cuts, but you can call that "leading." He made a decision to cut this deal. But I don't think you can look at what the Dems in Congress are doing, and say that they are not trying to extend the tax cuts for the middle class. Haven't you seen the news reports of what Schumer and Weiner are doing??? Doesn't look like inaction to me!

The Congress has turned into two acrimonious bodies and there are a bunch of people who were just elected that are self-defined obstructionists.

You want to take a stand on policy? Fine. Go ahead and take a stand and make it based on your beliefs. But don't you dare say that your stated goal is to "remove" the sitting president from office and therefore refuse to work across the aisle. Who does that benefit? Anyone but themselves? Nope. And I would say the same thing if this was a sitting Republican president and the Dem majority congress was saying it.

And what will all the Tea Partiers say when they realize that the deal the President made with the GOP leadership didn't involve cuts in spending? What will they do when they realize that these measures are going to add to the deficit? They are about to be tested come January 3rd.

Finally, I think it's a little much to say that the Dems "effed" it alone. To be fair, there has been next to no cooperation on things that the two parties normally do agree on. Sure, the Dem leadership pushed through unpopular pieces of legislation. Yes, they did a horrible job trying to address the healthcare crisis in this country and yes, they were stupid in the manner in which they consulted (or did not) the other party.

But again, they didn't do this alone, and it is shortsighted to say that the Dem party alone has put us in the current economic situation. Sure, the Bush era tax cuts were across the board (If I'm recalling correctly, my DH saw a total of $6.83 in his tax cut check that he received--big deal there). But why didn't that administration and the GOP in Congress make spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistant part of the DOD budget? Why did they push them through as supplementals? Why wasn't there a "pay for" for that????

If there's a "pay for" for one thing, there should be a "pay for" for everything. Period.

So what if that same person in Alabama hasn't been able to find a job for the past 2 years? I guess we should just let him and his family starve because GOP didn't want unemployment benefits extended.

i have been complaining left and right about this everywhere. We can continue to give tax cuts to those who have the most deductions in the world but we can't manage to assist those who heroically went into a damn war zone. You think the muslim terrorist did an injustice/crime against humanity well those bastards who voted against this are in the same boat as them in my eyes.

I'm sorry, but I need to respond to this one.

When is the GOP going to stand up and do the right thing on this one? Tit-for-tat is not acceptable when trying to assist the first responders who spent months inhaling toxins and did everyone in this nation a favor by serving down there.

Like I said, our DEMOCRATIC president supports these tax cuts for all americans, yet his fellow Democratic politicians are against it.

i dont believe they are extending past the 99 weeks, are they?

- if you are in a certain tier and the extension expires you dont move onto the net one - therefore someone w/ 40-something weeks will have their unemployment terminated

Give us the help we NEED, not want.

Get it right.

People WANT tax cuts.

9/11 responders NEED health care to deal with the laundry list of issues we all have. Issues we developed because we were helping YOU, or your DH or your cousin's brother's best friend, etc etc etc

Easy for you to say since 9/11 has directly affected you.

Try explaining wants vs. needs to a middle class family in Alabama who struggles to put food on the table every day and counts on these tax cuts.

Having to pay an extra thousand or two a year in taxes could mean the difference between having pasta for dinner and having cat food.

Easy for you to say since YOU"RE clearly not sick. They'll understand in Alabama the next time someone bombs their city and NO ONE goes to help because all the responders in NY DIED from the air quality and our government told them to eff off

Hey I never said I don't have a place in my heart for the 9/11 victims. I wish there was a way to give these people their benefits. I am not saying they shouldn't have their health coverage. But the 9/11 responders aren't the ONLY people that NEED benefits.

I am simply saying that the Democrats and Republicans want to play hardball with each other. It's a shame. But you can't just blame the GOP for this. Blame them both.

Does that place in your heart include healthcare for me and my family? There IS "a way to give these people their benefits." It's called the Zadroga bill

I know it's not your decision and I don't mean to unload on you.....but please stop defending why it's ok to use this bill as a bargaining chip. Nobody registered their political party at the door when showing up to ground zero to help!!
