Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
We are both Jewish but we have one Christmas tradition. Dinner DOWNSTAIRS at: Jews-a-plenty in Chinatown on Christmas!
On Chanukah, we make sure we light candles and say the prayers every night in Hebrew - particularly since we had kids so they are exposed to our faith and its culture as early as possible.
Oh ad I always post my menorahs HERE each night as well as the proper way to light them for inside and outside use. Though last year I lost computer use and couldn't!

my mom always bought us (and still does ) christmas pjs and gives them to us xmas eve.
My IL's do this for us, but it's something I would like to do for us now as a family. Is that wrong of me to "take" her tradition? It's not like we'll be going over there Christmas Eve to do the pj thing anymore....

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Posted by Hofstra26 My family had a special Xmas advent calendar that my mom sewed. Each day in December my sister, brother, and I would take turns adding an "ornament" to the tree. The day after Xmas Day was always our "stay in and play" day. We spent the day as a family at home all day playing with our new toys. My parents played games with us ALL day, we watched Xmas movies/cartoons and we were allowed to eat whatever we wanted all day long even if it was Xmas cookies for breakfast and homemade fudge for dinner. It was the MOST fun day, sometimes even better than Xmas itself. I plan on doing the same thing with my DD and future children. It's so nice to have a stress free, relaxing day after all the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
i absolutely LOVE this idea!
eta: DH and I pick out our tree (in years to come, i'd like to cut our own tree down like i did when i was little), and we order pizza and decorate the tree listening to christmas music.
my mother always gives us christmas pj's the night before and i will start this with DD.
we also used to get to open one small present each day from the 20th on. i remember always getting a lifesaver box the 20th day, pjs on the 24th, and random other gifts the other days.
this is getting me really excited for christmas!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
~My dad starts listening to xmas music on 11/1. Yes...today When my sister went away to college, and wasn't home to hear it, he left her a message of Christmas music playing on her answering machine. He did the same every year, and for me and my brother as we went away to college. They still do it every year for all of us. Today, my dad called me to ask when I was going out, so he could leave the message on my machine
~We watch Christmas Vacation on Thanksgiving
~We cut down our tree in CT the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving
~We don't go to my mom's until Christmas morning, but she puts pj pants over everyone's chair to wear the rest of the day.
I will add more as I think of them...I can't wait to read everyone else's!

I love the Xmas Tree Camp Out idea. That's adorable!!! That's something I would love to do with my DD when she's older. She's only 2 so it really wouldn't work just yet but that's one I am going to keep in mind. Love it!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Another holiday tradition that's been a part of my holidays since I was a kid is my mom's fudge. It's the easiest recipe but OMG!!..............so good. It's always a hit with everyone.
Xmas Fudge
3 cups (18oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk dash of salt 1/2 to 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) 1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract Red or green crystal sprinkles
Melts the chips and salt over low heat (or use a double boiler). Remove from heat when melted and stir in nuts and vanilla. Spread into an 8X8 pan lined with wax paper and sprayed lightly with cooking spray. Sprinkle the sprinkles all over the top. Chill until firm (a few hours) and then cute into cubes. Keep tightly covered in fridge and it will keep for a few days.
**You can add whatever else you like to the fudge to make different flavors. I add mini marshmallows sometimes for a Rocky Road fudge.**

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
No idea what is going to happen this year...but I did have xmas traditions before I married DH (even though Im Jewish...my brother is autistic and looooves christmas so we still have our traditions )
Christmas morning we watch the parade...then we bake cookies and watch Elf and A Christmas Story all day long...when the cookies are done we decorate them and for dinner we have Roast Beast (Roast Beef) with horseradish sauce and baked potatoes
I looooove our Christmas...I hate going to my ILs for Christmas because there is no joy in it at all...its all about getting presents and then going about your separate ways.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Since DH and i got engaged, I have gotten us a new ornament for the tree thats personalized with the year. Now that we have DS, we will do the same and make them fun personalized ones too. This way we can see how our family has changed through the years.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
This will be our first Christmas with DD. But since me and DH have been married, we put up our tree while watching the Rockefeller tree go up. I make hot chocolate and we decorate while the performers are singing. Then, we do the countdown and light up our tree at the same time as them.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Let's see if I can remember...
1) Elf on the Shelf comes out the day after Thanksgiving
2) We go out for Xmas dinner on Xmas Eve every year
3) We get the boys their own ornament for whatever they're into that year for the tree which they open on Xmas Eve that when they get older can keep.
4) They each get new PJ's to also open on Xmas eve to wear that night into Xmas morning
5) Bake cookies for Santa
6) Read "Twas the Night Before Xmas"
That's all I can think of right now? We don't have much family around for Xmas so Xmas Day is pretty boring!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
I can't wait to add more traditions (love the year in review letter from Santa!):
decorate Thanksgiving weekend or the one after
advent calendar (heirloom from FIL's side of the family from Germany)
we will start reindeer food and Elf on the Shelf
Secret Santa adopt a needy child or two
we must watch the Grinch
make an ornament for each of the grandparents
i finish my shopping by Thanksgiving weekend so December is all about the celebrating and preparing, not the stressful shopping.
picture of the kids sitting under the tree to see how they've grown each year...picture goes in this book....
i complete this book each year with the details of the holiday...menu and guests, events/gifts for Christmas Eve and Day, & copy of the holiday card. my step sister gave it to us years ago but we only began using it when DD1 was born.
christmas memories book

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Adding something new to my traditions this year. I was in Macy's today and they had these crazy adorable Gingerbread Man shaped cookie turners from Martha Stewart. My DD and I picked one out and we will use it every year when we make our Xmas cookies together. It will be the special Xmas cookie making cookie turner. I love it!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
From Thanksgiving until Christmas, Santa's elves visit our house a few times a week. Some days they play tricks on you (like re-arrange some of the furniture in your room) and other times they leave a small treat for you when u wake up. If you misbehave, the elves don't come. LOL.
On Christmas eve, famly goes to church. When we get home from Church, the elves have dropped off your 1st Christmas present, wrapped in the wrapping paper that all of your presents will be in for Christmas. The 1st present is always new PJ's and a teddy bear of some sort.
On Christmas morning, after u open your stocking and present, we go downstairs to get the "big gift." Usually something for the family like a ping pong table or something like that.
In January, when we take down the Christmas tree, under the skirt is always 1 last small gift for each of us that Santa or the elves dropped.
This is how we did things when I was a kid and will repeat all of this for our kids!!!

OMG I was thinking the same thing. This thread is totally making me tear up.
Some traditions we have are: *Decorating the tree the day after Thanksgiving with cocoa and cookies *Driving around one night and looking at all the lights (I like the idea of being in PJs. We might do that!) *Dinner Christmas Eve at Nana's with all the FISH!! *Putting Baby Jesus in the manger on Christmas Morning.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In
Of course crazy Christmas Obsessed Kristen was the one who started this thread
One tradition that my family had- something very very small- I have always wanted to keep going with my own family. My mom always snuck our stocking into our rooms while we were sleeping so we'd have something to open right away on Christmas morning. I think she also did that because half the time they weren't ready for us downstairs!
