Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

I love reading all these traditions. Growing up, my parents never did anything special. Now that I have my own family I want them to remember all of it and keep a tradition going.

-Put up the Christmas tree and decor the day after Thanksgiving
-The girls make their letter to Santa
-New PJ's for Christmas Eve
-Bake cookies for Santa and a glass of milk.
-Once the girls are sleeping, we bring out all the gifts and place them under the tree
-Christmas morning, my IL's come and we bake more cookies and cocoa and open up all the gift
-We then spend the day playing and watching Christmas movies

Looking to add a lot more...and I just heard about the Elf on a Shelf which I will be adding this year. Actually placing the order now.
This is by far my best Holiday of the year.
Great thread!!!!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

I wish I had a means of sharing such great ideas when my girls were little. (They are now in the same age group as most of you) So many wonderful ways suggested to create your own family traditions.

Just thought I'd mention one thing that I did every year that I don't think has come up here. I must warn you that my son-in-law is not a fan due to the overwhelming amount of Christmas "stuff" taking up room in his house! Aside from the usual special ornaments etc (which is enough that they haven't had to buy anything related to Xmas decorating!), I bought them each (2) a Christmas bear every year. Like the ones in Walmart or Kmart with the date on the foot. I did this until my oldest got married in 2009. So, she has bears dated from 1985 until then. I would alternate between the big ones and smaller ones so it didn't get too out of hand being that there were always 2 of the same bears every year to pull out.

Back to the son-in-law...since my oldest is now pregnant with her first (YAY!!!!), he has forbid me from starting that tradition with my soon to be grand daughter! What he doesn't know is that my daughter will be doing the same thing because of the sentimental value those bears have to her!

That's really cute!!!! My sister actually has a thing for nutcrackers so every year my mom got her some cute, different nutcracker (she has little men, mice, princesses, snowmen, all kinds of nutcrackers). She started this when my sister was very young and now she 32 so she probably has at least twenty something nutcrackers........cool collection to have. Chat Icon

I might actually do this with my DD because lately she too seems really into nutcrackers.

Growing up we always decorated gingerbread houses with our cousins the day after Thanksgiving to start off the Christmas season. I will start this tradition with my girls this year too.

On Christmas Eve we eat a big German dinner (my families' heritage) that we do not take the time to make other times of year. We look forward to it all year long!!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

I have a new tradition that I can add to my list now. Every Christmas morning I make this amazingly delicious baked french toast recipe (a recipe I got from here) and it has been such a big hit. I throw it in the oven while we're opening presents that way when we're done, it will be ready to eat. I'm certain it's about 5000 calories a bite but it's soooooo good and hey, it is Christmas morning after all. Started doing this about 2 years ago. It's definitely one of DHs favorite traditions now Chat Icon

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

I have 2 sons, so I buy all of my 'boys' (DH included) matching PJs, books for them to read together (this year is a Star Wars theme) and a special ornament for each of them. I give them this gift the week of Christmas.

I wrap 24 Christmas theme books and use them as a sort of 'advent calendar' throughout the month - 1 book a night.

I decorate their bedrooms with lights and garland etc.

We deocrate gingerbread houses. (my little one is a candy fiend)

I bake a TON - (that's my own thing) but I save the roll/cut sugar cookies to do with the boys. The Candy fiend smothers his in sprinkles

DH works for NY Presbyterian, so we always donate a bunch of toys to the Children's Hospital - the boys help pick stuff out.

We do a Polar Express train ride w/ my parents, sister, Aunt/Uncle/cousins - there are 18 of us for a weekend away - the kids love it.

I loathe that stupid freaking Elf - but I do it.

We put baby Jesus in the manger Christmas day - leave out the cookies/scotch for Santa (ahem, Mommy) and dump the reindeer's food on the lawn .........

We of course do the tree, and outside lights and movies and parties, light show at Jones Beach etc etc -

I'm already exhausted.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

Yay! So happy to see this thread still around 5 years later!

We haven't started any new traditions, but looking back at Rojenero's post, I plan to incorporate her idea of earning the chocolates from the advent calendar by giving a gift to Jesus each day.
