You won't need the pacifier! The hospital will supply one, and will gladly give you some extras to take home.
Nursing pads you could probably skip as well, since your milk doesn't come in right away - usually around day 4 or so.
Agree!

Re: Hospital bag list... how does this look?
I am sorry but Hayley it looks like you are packing for a weeks vacation! I packed about half that and didn't even use everything. It was such a PITA to go hunting for everything when I was leaving. Make sure that DH takes some stuff back home with him if you find yourself not using it!

I definitely don't agree about the nursing pads. I had to use lansinoh because my nips were sore and the nursing pads kept it from staining my shirts and bras. Lansinoh is hard to get out!
And my hospital only had MAM pacifiers - I am bringing my own soothies!

looks good...how about heavy duty overnight maxis...I heard the hospitals have the circa 1950 ones with the belts still...
Noooooooooo... their pads are the BEST!!! I kept packing them in my bag and telling the nurses I needed more! They are WAY better than what you buy in the store!
I disagree. I HATED the hospital pads. I used Kotex Overnights and they were AWESOME. They held A LOT and trust me.........you will bleed A LOT!! Also, as a few people mentioned, bring your own pillows. What a godsend my own pillows were. The hospital pillows were flimsy little pancakes. I was SO happy to have 2 nice fluffy pillows.

Re: Hospital bag list... how does this look?
I packed the abbreviated version of your list snd used hardly any of it. I gave birth on a Saturday at 4 pm and was discharged by 11 am Monday. I really only had one day there and definitely didn't need all that stuff.

Re: Hospital bag list... how does this look?
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I know this list seems totally crazy.... I basically did a search on here and read through a million hospital bag lists and just took bits and pieces from each one!
For the poster who said to pack 2 bags - 1 for labor/delivery and one for after... what would you put in each bag?

Re: Hospital bag list... how does this look?
I separated my stuff into 2 bags last night, because I decided I don't want everything with me in the L&D room. All I brought for L&D is a backpack with chap stick, my toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush), DH's change of clothes and toiletries (we know we will be there overnight because it's an induction), hair ties, the number for the pediatrician, the results of my Group B strep test, and some snacks for DH. Oh and two pairs of thick socks. Other than that, everything else is in my suitcase.

we did hard candies, snacks for dh, bottles of water for dh, camera and charger, cell chargers, hair ties and magazines in the labor bag and that was it.. the reason being that first when yo are in pain you dont want to be rummaging through a bag or having dh tear it apart... also if god forbid you hvae to have a c/s then your bag is going to be left somewhere... what they told us when i had ds was to very minimally for when your in l&d... when i had preterm labor with him we got the see the small little locker they gave the dh's to put stuff in.... you really dont need that much for when you are in labor.. as for pp bag, i really over packed last time and really only needed pjs for the second night since i was on an iv the first night, basic toilettries, two changes of clothes, cell charger and i think that is it
i did prefer the hospital pads.. i brought all the crappy maternity undies with me to just toss if needed... i really was able to pack myself into a backpack....

I've been reading through some of the hospital bag lists and trying to compile my own.
How does this look?
Baby book (for handprint/footprint) bathrobe Body Lotion Body Wash boppy camera charger Conditioner copies of pre registration hospital forms Deodorant Face Moisturizer Flip Flops glasses Going home outfit for Baby (2 sizes) Going home outfit for mom Hair ties Hairdryer ID Insurance information ipod lansinoh cream lip balm Long Sleeve T's magazines Makeup mouthwash Nightgown nursing bra nursing pads nursing tank overnight maxi pads (kotex) pacifier phone call list Phone charger pillows (2) PJs Shampoo slippers small notebook snacks Soap Socks sucking candies Toothbrush Toothpaste Towel Underwear Yoga Pants Zip Up Hoodie
I packed pretty much the same things, however I didn't use half of it and sent it home with DH. My duffel bag was about to explode and it was a total waste.... Being that I just went through it and it's fresh in my memory, here are some things I'd leave off the packing list...
I wouldn't bring lotion, I used the unscented stuff the hospital provided- they didn't want us using lotions (or sprays) of any sort around the babies.
Camera charger I left at home with DH and he brought the camera fully charged to & from the hospital. There aren't many available outlets in hospital rooms. Most are being used by monitors and such
Leave the going home outfit for the baby at home. That was the first thing the nurses told me when they finally brought me to my room. Bringing it to the hospital exposes it to unnecessary germs.
My hospital didn't allow hairdryers. I wouldn't pack it. When you get there- ask if you can have one- if so, then have Steve bring it to you. Same with snacks and candy. Don't bother packing it. Many of your visitors will bring them to you and again- you'll have to send most of it home.
Ipod- DH brought it up for me the 2nd day- mostly to drown out my roommate , I didn't have ANY time to use it. Between visitors, feedings, loving my baby- I didn't even turn it on. Same with magazines. DH and my grandmother brought them to me. I quickly realized I had zero time for those kinds of leisurely activities. My days in the hospital revolved around feeding, changing diapers, having drs checking in all the time, resting, visitors, and then trying to eat..lol
If you're bringing body wash- don't bother with soap. That's another item that if you need it- send DH to get it.
Everything else looks good. I wouldn't overpack too much stuff- many hospitals don't have much room for extra stuff anyway so it's best to check out your surroundings and then get the other items if you need it- or have room for it. You also don't want to have to worry about leaving stuff behind after you're discharged.

Thank you so much! That's really helpful!
We actually won't really be having any visitors (besides my mom!) since we're OOS.... but I'll definitely take your advice! Thanks again!

Regarding the pacifier, I would bring one if you are going to use them...NSUH Manhasset doesn't give you them in the regular nursery as per my experience in October.

Re: Hospital bag list... how does this look?
Hayley actually sent me a list of things that she didn't use. It also depends if you have a C versus natural birth, because there are some things that are not comfy for a C!

i think it depends on alot of different factors... having just come home saturday i can tell you what i personally used: chap stick bottled water for dh snacks for dh in ldr and me after two pairs of comfy pants 10 pairs of my maternitgy undies that were to be tossed as i went 3 nursing tanks two hoodies basic bathroom stuff 3 pairs of socks (old ones i could toss) my old slippers (so i could toss after) cell phone/charger camera/batteries pen and paper outfit for baby to come home in baby nail file
I did not bring pads, i love theirs
they provided everything nursing related (pads and cream)
i did not bring anything that was of importance.... as a person who has had both bed bugs and scabies brought home from hospitals i would personally never bring any items like that with me...
for those who are worried about being checked constantly, after two vaginal deliveries i can tell you that after i was wheeled out of recovery i was never checked down then again, the only checked my uterus, which they can do fully clothed (and that was with two different practices)
I wore the hospital gown for the first 24 hours since i had the iv still running
I didnt have seperate jammies, by the time i got out of the gown i put on my comfy clothes and never felt the need to change again into jammies...
i do highly recommend bringing snacks since i didnt get to chose my meals and so i got alot of food i do not eat...
