what are the signs? DD is very gasy and screams like she is in pain after a bottle...

You might never know until you try! Sounds like those are signs to make a switch though. My DS showed no signs of gas but we ran out of regular Enfamil and had a free sample of Gentle Ease so we tried it. Suddenly he was napping so much better (he would always go down easy but would wake up anywhere from 20-60 mins into a nap and then it would be a fight to get him to go back down) and it took me a few days to realize it was the formula. However, now his poops are disastrous so we are trying to find the right balance of mixing reg Enfamil with the Gentle Ease

That is why we changed DS' formula. He was super gassy on Similac Advance so we switched to Enfamil Gentlease. I've heard Goodstart Gentle Plus is equivalent as well.
He did a lot better and was a lot more comfy.

I changed dd several times because of excessive spitup, gas pains and constipation, its sort of trail and error

We had the same issues and so we switched him at around 3 weeks to Soy. My husband whad a sensitivity as a baby to milk based formula and the switch helped him a ton. No more screaming fits!

Jeremy had his formula changed 4 times and we ended up back on the second one we tried. I even dragged him to a GI specialist who, like his pediatrician said he had an immature digestive system. Sometimes a baby has to be on a formula for a couple of weeks before it is determined if it is the right one.
