here's a tip I have found always works:

write down your order/specific instructions & hand it to them.

this is especially good to do if you're ordering more than one sandwich (like if you order a few for your officemates)

Oh, and I would say this, "Can I have Bologna, Ham and American Cheese on a roll with lettuce and mayo."

My dad used to own a deli....it's in my blood.

Dude, this is TOTALLY what I say!!!

Yesterday I gave him the order, he left off the cheese in repeating it so I said "oh don't forget the cheese" so instead he forgot the damn lettuce!!! Chat Icon

The way you are ordering is fine.
The guy making the sandwich is just stupid.

Sometimes it's them, not you. Chat Icon

Then apparently I have a knack for finding ALL the stupid deli help! Chat Icon

It's astounding, really.

I'm totally getting the same sandwich today and see what happens... Chat Icon

And seriously, how can anyone hate bologna and mayo?? You guys are crazy!! Chat Icon

I don't think there's anything wrong with the way you're ordering it.

On a side note... I like skim milk but regular sugar in my coffee. Every blessed time I go into a Dunkin Donuts, I cause mass confusion because of this. No one understands why I'm getting regular sugar (as opposed to Splenda) and skim milk. They ask me if "I'm sure" at least 5 times, and it happens at every single DD that I go to that I've really started to avoid going to DDs at all. Chat Icon

so bizarre. i wonder why would getting regular sugar would throw them off so much? Chat Icon

i find artificial sweeteners to be too sweet, i'd never get them...makes sense to me.

Re: How do you order a sandwich at the deli?

I've worked in a really busy deli and it's hard when you are trying to move fast and people are shouting out orders left and right. But you're not doing anything wrong. BUT, I always appreciated it when a customer came in with a written list of what they wanted. Then I could zip around the store and make everything correctly and efficiently.

I'm glad that it makes sense to someone, because you should see the looks I get and confusion I cause every time I order at a DD. Chat Icon

See I totally get what you're saying and had it not been for the fact that I went in after two in the afternoon, well after the lunch rush, I'd have had a lot more patience for it.

Maybe I'll start writing my order? I never thought to do that for just one sandwich but maybe it's worth it.

It makes total sense. Sweetener isn't for everyone but that doesn't mean you can't go light on the milk.

I went to a DD and ordered an iced tea with lemon - apparently they just put the lemon in so the fact that I was asking for it totally threw the chick off. It took me nearly ten minutes to get my order!

I don't do very well with ordering in places, do I?? Chat Icon

I hate places like that. You didn't order anything that complicated. They SHOULD be getting it right.

Maybe b/c you get 2 meats, it is too much for them to remember? Chat Icon

I always spout my whole order-- for example, "turkey on whole wheat, with munster cheese, tomato & mustard", and then they make the sandwhich & say do you want anything on that?, so I have to repeat tomato & mustard.

And they say, lettuce & tomoto? And I have to say, no lettuce, just tomato--with mustard.

I think I end up with all the lettuce you're not getting!

I have the EXACT opposite problem. They don't get that I DON'T want tomato! There are times I get tomato and NO lettuce!!

Maybe we should go out to lunch together that way we'll finally get what we really ordered! Chat Icon

You are absolutely right! It's one sandwich and it's not that complicated, they *should* be able to figure it out without you writing it down, but the orders do all sort of run together after awhile. Chat Icon

Re: How do you order a sandwich at the deli?

Are these deli workers writing your order down on a pad or are you just verbally giving it to them?

When I worked in a deli we wrote down every order on tickets and lettuce and tomato was L or T

When I was little, I would only eat PLAIN hamburgers frmo McDonald's.

I still remember my dad saying: OK get two pieces of PLAIN bun. Put a hamburger in the middle, close it, and give that to her.

It would ALWAYS have cheese and/or pickles and/or ketchup on it.

OMG! Same thing here. I would order a quarter pound HAMburger with no cheese. They gave me a cheeseburger. Chat Icon One time a manager was standing right there so I asked him how should I order my sandwich so I don't get cheese since saying NO CHEESE worked. He just shrugged.

Re: How do you order a sandwich at the deli?

This thread has inspired me to get a sandwich for lunch!! Salami and provolone for me!

Although whenever I order salami & provolone on rye bread with mayo, I ALWAYS get weird looks/comments from the deli guys. Not everyone likes their sandwich the same way!!! Just make it, please! No need for the commentary. Chat Icon
