How far away is your ped from your house?
I've always thought it best to have the ped local and close by in case of emergency. But now im wondering if thats necessary. Thoughts?

10 minutes. I think local is important for a couple of reasons. If my DD is very sick and she has been before, it was always a quick ride to the doctor. Also don't forget to take into consideration if the doctor is affiliated with your local hospital. That is another important aspect.

About 5 minutes...we live in Rocky Point and she's in Mt. Sinai. This is DS second pediatrician. We used to live in Bay Shore, but switched because being close is important to us.

Re: How far away is your ped from your house?
30-35 mins. I moved and can't part with my old peds. But they told me it was fine. In an emergency, just go local. If it can wait but it's an emergency, go to the ER by the ped. If it's something that if off hours, I can go to any of the centers such as PM pediatrics. And if it's regular hours, then I go there, but my DD isn't sick often so I so far, barely have had any sick visits. My ped is great, told me to call anytime to see if I should come in. And I have done that and a few times she told me, dont bother coming in for such and such. And she is always right. Ped told me, when i asked, that they have many patients who aren't close. They have pts who come in from upstate. It's no big deal for routine visits, immunizations, etc. I could never part with my peds, esp for immunizations, etc. But my DD is older now...not sure how easy it would be with an infant, for 1st year visits. But if I have another baby, I plan to make it work b/c I trust them 100%.

Re: How far away is your ped from your house?
Ours is 20 minutes. I debate if it's a big deal to drive that far but so far is hasn't been. If there's a real emergency I'm going to be rushing to the hospital not the doctor's office anyway. If I find that it becomes a real inconvenience then we'll find a new doctor. We really like who we've been using though so we're hesitant to switch.

About 5 minutes but I know people that travel at least 20 minutes...go with who you feel most comfortable with.

although it probably would be nice, I don't think it's 'necessary'. I used to have a pediatrician that was literally 3 minutes from my house. Convenient? yes. But was he the best choice for my daughter? No. He ended up revealing things about himself that were NOT good and I decided that I would not settle. I think it's important to do what's best for your child, even if that means the drive to her doctor is inconvenient. So the one we go to now is 40 minutes away - at the same hospital where I delivered her. So in my opinion, yeah it would be nice to have one close by. But in the end, finding the BEST doctor for my child is more important to me than where s/he's located.

10 minutes to the ped from our house. It is 3 minutes from DHs office to the ped.

Re: How far away is your ped from your house?
About 15 minutes. I remember when I was pregnant last time and we took the hospital tour, the nurse who gave the tour said they really recommend finding a pediatrician within 20 minutes of your house. We had already chosen ours at that point, but that always stuck in my head.
