Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?
If I don't get laid off, I plan to go back after aboout 4 months (3 months maternity + 1 month vacation days).
I think the current plan is to have the grandparents watch the baby until s/he is a little older and then we can send her/him to daycare/nursery school.

I want my mother to be a grandmother not a daycare provider. This could potentially cause further problems.
I just wish people would keep their comments to themselves with regard to my choices.
Totally, thankfully my mom is still really young and working, MIL on the other hand is older and ready to retire, but in NO way do I want someone else's views raising my child, per the post yesterday about getting along with MIL, I just won't have it....at least I know wtih daycare or a nanny, they will have to go by what I want, or I will pull her out or change the nanny...DH hates the idea of daycare or a nanny, so that is why I'm really hoping to get something from home...

I think we could swing it financially, but it would be awfully tight, and I'm not willing to do that to my family.

But honestly, the daycare option is more convenient for our work schedules and not to mention, I want my mother to be a grandmother not a daycare provider. This could potentially cause further problems.
My Mother watches Andrew and is def still his grandmother. I really don't get this statement.

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?
As of today, I'm undecided. I say "I" because I did not have to return to work after DS was born (he's 15 mos) but chose to return because I wasn't ready to be a SAHM. DH would prefer I stay home but really supports my decision either way. I'll make my decision once I'm out on leave. I'll always work but just may not return to working for someone else.

Not to start drama, but I agree with MrsFlatbread, I can't see my mother watching my DD 5 days a week 8 hours a day and having it not feel as she was more of a childcare provider than a grandmother...I can see taking care of DD one or two days a week and still being able to be "Grandma" but every day I don't think its fair for either the parent and the grandparent... ETA: This is my personal view it really is what works for each individual...

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?
I will return to work 3.5 days a week. We are very blessed in that DH does shift work- so he's able to work doubles the days I'm home, and is off the days I work.
We don't have tons of alone time together, so we make every moment count. But the $$$ we save and the piece of mind is totally worth it.
Plus- he's a WAY better stay at home parent than I am. In fact, I tell everyone at work I have the best wife in the world...

I don't think MrsFlatbread meant to offend anyone - Please don't be upset - I hate when people get upset on this board, this is the NICE board !!!
We ALL have such different views on how our family dynamic will work and what will work in one family may be disasterous in another -
In MY family, I'd let my parents totally spoil my kid IF they saw him/her once or twice a week -
If my Mom was my primary caregiver, I'd expect her to help me raise the baby based on what I wanted - which would mean he/she eats, sleeps, watches TV, plays, gets ice cream, throw a fit etc etc according to ME -
Which would basically throw the whole 'I get to do whatever I want at Grandma's house' idea out the window .......And THAT would make my Mom unhappy b/c she wants to be the one who gets to do the 'bad' stuff with the kid - And if my Mom were disappointed and unhappy w/ her "Grandma" role, I'd be unhappy - And my mom is such a crazy, creative, fun kooky person that I'd be depriving my kid of their 'real' Grandma, and depriving my Mom of BEING that for my kid if I asked her to be the primary caregiver and put all of these 'rules' on her ..........

I'll be finishing my last semester of school, which will be full-time. I'm also going to work part-time, but I have a very flexible job that I'll be home working for the first 6 months.

i would love to say i'll go back to work after x amount of months, but we're saving up lots right now to cushion us for living off of one income, so we're going to play it by ear...but i have no idea!

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?
I only took 3 weeks off with DS because I own my own dance school and didn't really have another option. We're trying for #2 now and I'm "hoping" to plan to have the baby when I'm off in the summer so I can have a little more time with my newborn. But I will return the work in September. I only work part time and make too much money to walk away.

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?
I will be taking 12 weeks off and returning to work. I worked very hard in my career and love my job. I could not imagine not working, it's who I am.
I am very fortunate because I work from 4 pm till 12 am. Dh is home by 3 pm, so there will always be a parent home with DD and no need for day care. We will each have our bonding time with DD.

Honestly hats off to you for knowing that it won't work. I had my doubts but I wanted to make my mom happy and 3 years later it got ugly mixing "business" and family. With the baby if I return to work at some point we will be using childcare outside the family because I don't want to deal with the dynamic. IMO using a family member for FT daycare does potentially take away from their role as grandma, aunt, cousin..whatever. They are working for you and it gets tricky.

I agree. My grandmother essentially helped raise my four cousins full time and it has caused a lot of issues in the family. Sometimes it works and it is a great solution, other times it's not. It wouldn't work for my situation either (if we lived near my parents/ILs.)
