Definitely going back to work!

This time around I'm going to try and take a longer maternity leave...really trying for 6 months... and maybe even a temporary alternative work schedule for the first year I am back.

Definitely returning to work-
I've been with my company for many years because of the flexibilty allowed here - it certainly isn't because of the "millions" they pay me! Chat Icon
I'm hoping to return PT after my leave for a few extra months.

I can't really imagine not going back to work. I like what I do and wouldn't want to have to give it up. I'll be out for 4 months with the baby. When I go back to work I'll be home by 3 at the latest and have family to watch the baby.

im definately going back in some way shape or form..most likely not to where i was, unless it works out for all involved..but somewhere close, and somewhere part time..
i got to stay home with DS for 2 1/2 years, and i loved every single second of it..although i dont wanna 'lose touch" with my profession either.

But honestly, the daycare option is more convenient for our work schedules and not to mention, I want my mother to be a grandmother not a daycare provider. This could potentially cause further problems.

My Mother watches Andrew and is def still his grandmother. I really don't get this statement.Chat Icon

I agree as my mom and MIL will be watching my baby when I go back to work. Hopefully it will work out with some ground rules laid out.

I'll be able to stay home about 6 months, but then it's back to work.

I work part-time now & I will be doing the same after this baby. I'm also a part-time student. I'm going to take the spring semester off (due in April) & then return to school in September.

Not to start drama, but I agree with MrsFlatbread, I can't see my mother watching my DD 5 days a week 8 hours a day and having it not feel as she was more of a childcare provider than a grandmother...I can see taking care of DD one or two days a week and still being able to be "Grandma" but every day I don't think its fair for either the parent and the grandparent...
ETA: This is my personal view it really is what works for each individual...

well, I guess it all stems from our personal relationships with our moms, and what we consider to be a grandma role.

I am definitely going back to work. right now, DH is still in grad school and I'm the major $$ earner (becuase I'm older and well out of school). I also invested 9 years in higher ed to get where I am, plus an additional 3 years of post-grad training... I'm not about to discard 12 years of my life and abandon my career. It's way too much a part of my personality.

My mom will be watching Scone. While I don't agree with her on every topic, I will say one thing, she raised me right! I trust her judgement completely, and know she wants what's best for Scone.

Also, there is a long standing tradition in our family of Omas taking care of kids while moms work. She had HER Oma take care of her while her Mutti worked....(I know, rather progressive for the 1940's and 50's huh?) So, for us, it's the natural progression of things, and frankly, I think it makes for a super-close extended family.... I like the idea.

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?

I am planning to take about 3 months off.

I need to work because I carry the healthcare benefits and pay for everything besides the mortgage.

To be honest, I think it would cause issues in our marriage if I stayed home F/T. DH owns his own company and works more than the average person so I think he would really start to look at it as "my being on vacation" if I was home F/T. I know that is a totally inaccurate assessment and would totally offend some SAHM mom's but for our personal situation, I just don't think it would work.

The plan is to use my MIL 2 days a week for childcare and then I want to find someone else for the other 2 days. I only plan to work 4 days a week and I actually want to work at least one day (more if possible from home/visit clients in the field).

I feel like I will be "taking advantage" if I have my
Chat Icon stay with the grandparents for more than 2 days a week. Besides, my SIL just announced she is expecting TWINS and wants to use them too for childcare. I could see it turning into a major family issue down the road if we make the grandparents responsible for THREE newborns F/T.

Re: How many of you will be returning to work after baby is born?

I am a teacher ...due in February. I am taking my allowed 12 weeks and then I am returning to work for the remainder of the school year, approx. 5 weeks. Between DH, Mom and MIL those weeks are taken care of. THEN, I am home for the summer.

By the time our baby is ready to go to daycare he/she will be about 6 months old. We are toying with the idea of having someone come to the house instead of daycare... but either way I am returning to work.

Fortunately, being a teacher, we do get random days off and vacations and summer "off."

I will no longer be doing Extra tutoring at school because that would require me to stay another 2 hours each day basically.

I totally identify with your situation. I earn a good salary and hold the benefits. I also contribute generously to our retirement fund. DH has his own practice which can be hot or cold. He sometimes works 12-15 hour days and I know he would resent it if I stayed home, especially after my sister offered to watch DD for relatively low compensation. I am also off with pay during the summertime, and get tons of vacation and am home by 2:30 pm, so my not working just doesn't make sense for us. I made it clear to him that I AM going to finish this course of study I started last Fall and had to put on hold b/c this pregnancy has been so complicated. He is going to shorten his work day 3x per week to accommodate that.
