I made all birthday cakes so far for DS and DD. Making and decorating your own cakes gets more fun after the first birthday, because even by age 2 you can start decorating it with characters or stuff that they love, and then they can request what flavor and what decoration they want, etc.
I probably spent $10 to $15 on each cake, not so much on ingredients but on a couple of cake decorating supplies that I might not have had on hand.

I spent a lot. We got a cupcake tower, it was one the one splurge. My birthday is a few days after theirs, so I justified it by saying it was for all three of our birthdays!

$80 - a full sheet with 4 different fillings (one per quadrant) and her pic on it along with butterflies that matched her paper good themed stuff. My cousins DH made it though or it would have been more.

Got just a regular bakery cake.. not sure how much it was b/c my step mother got it for us- but I'm sure it wasn't big bucks- it didn't have like fondant on it or anything "cake boss" style!

$26. $20 for the pan, $6 for the colors and a box of cake mix.
I made the cake, frosting and colored the frosting and DH decorated the cake.

For her party which was on her birthday I ordered a cake from BJs for the party guests and I made an elmo cake for DD as her smash cake.
Both together cost me about $30.

$80 for the cake - it was for 40 ppl.
I also had 48 cupcakes made as favors and that cost me $60.
$140 total
I justified spending so much because it was his 1st Birthday AND his Christening
