Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?

Ugh, such a sore subject for me.. NONE. I'll be lucky if he can swing a day off. He works in the hospital so he likely won't take time off when I'm there. I doubt he'll be able to take a day off, but if we are lucky he may have a sympathetic attending who will let him come home early or something.
Is your DH a resident or fellow?
Any attending will let your DH have the day off!
DH is hoping that he can get part of the week off just for delivery and then he'll take the following week off for vacation. We are due at the end of one rotation so he'll be taking one week off for the first rotation and then another week off a few weeks into his next rotation.
DH won't even ask if he has paternity leave! He said even if he has it, he won't use it because it will make him look bad to his colleagues. I really don't get it.
Resident! He hates even taking a sick day because he feels like it makes him look bad. I do not understand it one bit!
I'm due right in the middle of a rotation one that includes two weeks of nights, blah.
I'm hoping that he just as a nice attending that makes him leave. He's a great great husband, but really won't take a day off unless he's forced to.
Is your husband a resident or fellow?

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
Hopefully a full work week. He has his own business, which one would think would give him the flexibility to do whatever he wants, but the truth is, if he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid. But he would like to be home as much as possible in those early days.

DH is a fellow.
He has a good relationship with the other fellows so he's certain they won't mind covering a case or two on the day of and after delivery. Then he can take a week of vacation off. He is going to swap call so he isn't on call for a month after the baby is born.

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
Thats awesome! His hospital just switched to night float this year so no more calls. It just so happens that the month that encompasses our due date is one that includes nights. Honestly, for my husband I think it's an issue of how the attendings will perceive him rather than his co resdients. He's in the middle of applying for fellowships now and is just being a total a+ resident. I'm only 16 weeks so I am hoping this calms down a bit before April.
I'm lucky though because my parents like 20 minutes away and we will go stay with them for a little this way I'll have some support.

It's not like they won't let him join you in the delivery room. It probably is unlikely that he'd get extra time off afterwards if he doesn't have scheduled vacation.
DS was born during DH's research rotation but DS needed heart surgery a few weeks later during DH's busiest rotation. The attendings ordered him out of their OR to be with his family. Attendings are human. Those same attendings wrote DH the highest recommendations. If they care about your DH and like him, they will treat him well.

Right now 1 week, if I deliver around my dd then my mom is off from work the following week to help. I would rather him take vacation when we can enjoy it over the summer

Oh totally, he'll definitely be able to take the day or two that I'm in labor off. I don't think he'll take the days I'm recouping in the hospital off because he can just come by if he's slow. I'm also sure I'll have tons of family around. I have a feeling that he'll be able to take a one or two days in the beginning without much issue, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
My DH is taking 2 weeks off after I have the baby. I feel bad saying this but he wanted to take the whole month off...he gets a lot of vacation time, but I honestly didnt want him to. Its going to be in January, we will be stuck in the house for the most part and I know we will get on each others nerves and I wanted him to have time off when the baby is a little older. Right after they are born all they do is eat and sleep and I want my alone time. Is that bad of me?

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
Probably a week. His job has a terrible vacation/time off policy. He might take an extra week unpaid, but both of our families are less than 45 mins away, so if I really need extra hands, they are there.

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
We will play it by ear when the time comes, but he plans on taking all his vacation, sick & personal days.. He's only used 2 all year so he has about a month he technically can take off! He also can take paternity leave up to THREE MONTHS (better than my maternity leave!!!) but of course, the leave is unpaid so that certainly won't happen

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
DH is taking the 4days or so that i will be in the hospital after my c-section (i go in on a Thursday). Then he will take the first week i am home off. Then my MIL is taking a week off after that, and the week after that DH is taking another week off. Hopefully after 3 weeks i will be on some sort of schedule with the babies.

Re: How much time is your DH taking off when the baby is born?
My husband will probably only take off while I am in the hospital and then go back to work when we are home. From Memorial Day to Labor Day is his extreme busy season at work and we are due May 22, so he really can't take too much time off. We tried to plan the baby around his work schedule and we were preg this winter, but had a miss in March, so we didn't want to wait another year to start trying again. But after thinking about it, I will be home 15 weeks will have me off from May 22 right to Labor Day Weekend, and then DH will be home after that. So we will not have to use Daycare until March when the baby is a bit older, so even though he won't be home in the beginning, I think this way works out so much better for us.
