How much water to give infant?
I give her about 2 oz with meals. She used to hardly drink anything, but after I introduced the straw sippy, she's started to suck it down. Is there a rule of the thumb for how much they can have? I just remember the nurse in the hospital when she was a NB telling me not to give her any water because it would fill her up and she wouldn't take enough BM.
She's 8 months.

Re: How much water to give infant?
I heard no water until 6 months b/c their livers (or something) can't process it. I don't think I gave DS water until about a year.

Re: How much water to give infant?
i give my ds water whenever. i was never really told about restriction after 6 months.
i also happen to work for a water company and believe in healthy hydration ~ so ive never thought twice about giving him water.
good luck!

Re: How much water to give infant?
Dd is 6 mos and usually drinks 1- 2 oz with her breakfast and dinner "meals". I usually give her water if we are outside and it's hot. My ped said it's fine to give water once they start solids. And she also said "if you are thirsty, they are thirsty".. I relate that phrase to hot weather and always offer her water when we are outside. She still drinks her formula no problem.

Re: How much water to give infant?
I've heard the same thing - after 6 months, no restrictions but use common sense my ped actually encouraged me to give LO water in a sippy cup with meals once he started solids - it helps with constipation and it teaches him how to use a sippy at the same time DS gets a sippy with water during his meals and I also give it to him if it is hot, if he has been bouncing around alot in his toys, etc. - whenever I think he is "thirsty" -- if he doesn't want it, he won't drink it but if he is thirsty, he will drink what he wants and then stop. he still eats the same amount and drinks the same amount of formula

Before 6 months too much fluid is a strain on their kidneys. After 6 months there really isn't a limitation.
