One way to save is to cut back is to downgrade the cable. I know that I just saved $50 a month cutting down services we don't *need*.
Downgrading cell phone plans and getting rid of features you don't use. I just saved $15 a month downgrading my text messaging from unlimited to 200.
Clipping Sunday coupons is like clipping cash. Just throwing them out is cash in the trash
Another one..rent from Redbox instead of Blockbuster, etc. It's $1 a night and they typically have promo codes for a free night. You can return them at any Redbox location.

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
great ideas....we get netflix now, its 10 a month but thats 2 movies fomr blockbuster...and its unlimited and we have access online thorugh our tv....
I also carpool with a girl from work, we go to lunch on Fridayd, ill bring my own to the food court....LOL
But by doing this we can afford to go out on a Friday and have a good time.
I actually really enjoy it, its like a challenge,... we went form spending my entire check (except 200 for DS savings per pay period) to now we save the entire thing....its ridiculous....

That's how I look at it also. It's fun to figure out how to get the most bang for your buck
Another thing we just started doing is having a targeted saving goal. We want to get a new car and plan on financing part of it, but we are going to try and have a nice big down payment on it up front to offset the monthly costs. So each month the less we spend, the more that can go into the car fund. It gives me a little incentive to be more frugal. I also use cloth diapers, make my own baby food, meal plan (sometimes), clip couons and buy in bulk.

I agree about the challenge! Its like I'm playing my own supermarket sweep game with myself when I do the grocery shopping! You buy on sale, use manufacturers coupons and then store coupons and you save so much $$! Plus we eat very good meals that most would think are $$$$, but rather its half the cost of a pizza!

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
I am very worried, because who is going to be most directly effected by it......our children when they are older, our country is going into so much debt right now with this stupid stimulus package that although directly its not affecting us right now, our kids are going to have to pay for it. Makes me so freaken angry, i can't belive were this country is going, and the general public does not see it....

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
What is happening with the economy is very scary. Luckily, as you may remember, DH and I are both in law enforcement within the City of NY so the likelihood of us losing our jobs is very slim [considering DH has 15 years and I have 11 years on the force.] Therefore, I consider myself very fortunate that our jobs are so stable. I just hope inflation doesn't get out of control b/c our salaries aren't so great.

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
Not worried, we're actually saving for a house and establishing healthy spending habits so that we can have whatever we need and want in our future for our son and for ourselves. We've been with our companies 5+ years. We're pretty safe.

I'm not worried about us, because we have been banking my entire salary and DH's bonuses for years now. We have enough in savings to live off of for 6 years the same way we are living now if we both were to lose our jobs. But I am worried for a lot of people I know.
and what if something were to happen to the banks????

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
Actually my DH's company does better in an economic slump so it isn't so bad for us.
Add to that that I have my own business -- which does very well but we never needed my income for typical cost of living expenses. I use it for "extras" and savings, above and beyond maxing out or regular savings.
So at the moment, I am responsible and prudent as I have always been, which allows me the financial freedom to splurge when I want to.

Not worried about us in particular but worried about EVERYONE on the whole.
I teach college economics and have been privy to a lot of information about the economy that in all honesty the media is completely downplaying.
W/o getting into an economic lesson the current situation that we are in is worse than anything we have seen since the Great Depression.
The only reason why it doesn't seem as bad right now is that our government has borrowed from our future in order to keep us afloat right now. Add this crisis to the bill from the war and we have borrowed money from our grandchildren
As of today, the markets have lost all of the gains from the last 12 years. Anyone who wants/needs to retire in the next 15 years most likely will not see that bounce back. To make it worse, most of the baby boomers didn't have enough saved, before this bust. I'll be honest, Dh and I might not see our retirement bounce back.
Forget about Social Security for so many of the baby boomers, it will not be available in its present form. Many of them will be forced to living with their sons and daughters. It will NEVER be available for us.
Even with the government's bail out their is a loss of available liquid capital. Interest rates on c.c. are WAY up. This also affects business. Everyone has become so used to living a mortgaged lifestyle, (leases, c.c. debt, etc.) and so have many businesses. W/o the availability of the capital, some have been forced to close their doors whereas, a few years ago another company may have bought them, kept the doors open and the jobs available.
It's very bad. I hear it from my family members who work in the market. I read it in my daily e-mails from the prof. I work with. I've seen the graphs.
Most analysts say, if we are lucky we will hit rock bottom this summer. Others, say in a year or two.
Really, no industry is safe. Unions are furlouging more and more and for longer and longer periods.
While it's not good for the economy on the whole, most financial experts say save all you can, stockpile your emergency fund, unfortunately, so many will need it.
Theresa, I'm sure you and DH could have conversations hours long. I am scared sh*tless and everyday DH paints a real doomsday situation of what could really happen not just with us but the country and it's people as a whole. Think desperation and what people do in times of desperation! Being in the financial field and a very well read person DH is too smart for his own good sometimes. This country and it's politicians can be so azz backwards.

wow thats AMAZING..do you own a house...?
Yes, we bought a house in 2004. We bought a house we could afford on one salary alone at the time in 2004. Since then our salaries have gone up, so we are even better off.
But there are other people in my family not so lucky. To buy a house, fancy clothes, cars, etc. that you afford while making your maximum salaries, and now with business slowing down, you are not at your max salary anymore. How do these things get paid for? Thats scary!
DH and I live well below our means and always have, and even though we are doing well now and I am not worried now, I do agree with some posters about worrying for the future. What will the times be like when we retire? Will we ever be able to retire at all?

Re: How worried are you? Economy related.
Rob has been out of work since June.. with no signs of life coming from his union.
Sometimes .. I get a little anxious. But then I stop and I reset.
We can afford our mortgage. We can afford to pay our bills. We can put food on the table. We have a place to lay our heads. We are blessed.
There are things that they won't have... but they are THINGS. They might not get the newest video game.. but they still have their imaginations and a great fort and swingset in the backyard. They won’t be going on a trip to Disney anytime soon – but we will DEFINITELY be taking some picnics to the beach this summer – and they’ll continue their tour of parks on Long Island with their dad and their bikes! We won’t be going out for supper much – but they will help me cook our meals at home. We won’t be having elaborate bday parties – but they will have the people that they love and the people who love them back coming by to celebrate with cake and good wishes.
Yeah.. they are pretty lucky kids if you ask me. And maybe.. just MAYBE.. having a sinking economy is not the worst thing that could happen. We'll rebound - and we'll likely be better for it.
I refuse to live in fear. It's bad. It's probably going to get worse. We'll survive and we'll muddle through the best we can. Sleepless nights full of tears and anxiety is not good for me or my kids.
