Re: Hypothetical situation- if you overhear someone talking about you...
What were they saying? Given your situation - I would say you have to expect to be part of the office gossip until the next thing comes up.
I probably would have stayed in or left too. Normally I'd call them out but I think having them see you & know you overheard their conversation would lead to more gossip if presented in a dramatic way.
I would call the person who was nice to me aside & mention something to them. Then leave it alone.
No need to bring more drama into my life - particularly where I earn my livelihood.

I would have waited to hear the whole conversation and then i would have walked out of the stall while they were washing their hands...wash my hands, and smile at them as i walk out the door.

I would not want to hear it, and would leave in a hurry. I wouldnt be able to keep it in, so to keep the peace its better that I don't hear it.

Id have stayed and yes I would have been at the sink washing my hands when they came out. Oh the look on their faces and the BS they'd prolly make up to cover it.

I would either stay or leave the stall and wait to they come out and see their faces when they learned I was in the stall.
This!
Sorry that happened to you!

I would listen as long as i could then I would completely confront them. But thats me so not afraid of confrontation. Of course on a completely mature level.

This! For sure. And then I'd come out when they were finished and embarrass them.

I would have stayed and listened. Would have waited by the sinks until they exited the stalls.

Re: Hypothetical situation- if you overhear someone talking about you...
I would wait and listen to what they said. Then announce myself to them. Then call them out on talking about me behind my back, then walk out confidently and give them the evil eye every single time I saw them after that.
I have issues...
