I think it is wonderful that you FIL helped you pay off your debt. You no longer have to worry about paying the bank any finance charges (which ends up being so much more $$$ that you are paying back). Congratulations to you!
I personally would never rather pay a bank bank than my own family. I don't feel it is an invastion of privacy at all. If family can help than that is wonderful!
Most people are in debt anyhow whether you owe car payments or a mortgage those are all considered debts b/c you owe money on all of it!
