i am desperate - need CIO advice

DS will be 5 months old on thursday. for the past month, he has been waking up at least twice a night, but usually more. he ONLY wakes for his pacifier. he slept through the night at a young age, so i know he can do it. plus i am SURE he is not hungry, because once he has his pacifier he goes right back to sleep.

this has been KILLING my sleep at night Chat Icon i am so so so tired and i need him to stop waking up.

does anyone have advice on doing CIO for a situation like this?

Well i haven't had to deal with the pacifier situation but i have a feeling if you want to do CIO... you're going to have to do CIO in the full version.

Unless you want to wait another month- month in a half for when ds will be able to find his own pacifiers. We had about 7 pacifiers in ds's crib at night for him to find on his own. It took a little while, but he finally was able to find them, put them in his mouth and put the correct end in. Chat Icon

Unfortunately it sounds like your ds can't self soothe without it. Therefore CIO is going to be tough. We did CIO with my son at 5 1/2 months because he was getting up 5 times a night just for comfort, so i feel your pain.

We let DS CIO in the middle of the night when he lost his pacifier.

I know some people think this is a big no-no, but initially we had no bumper in his crib and he kept knocking his pacifier out of the crib.

We started putting in 3-4 pacifiers at night, and put IN the bumper and soon he was better at finding the pacifier himself.

I know every day with no sleep seems like an eternity, but just keep in mind, he'll be able to find his pacifier by himself soon.

So i take it when he wakes up and realizes he doesn't have it, he cries right? for how long? Have you tried just letting him cry and maybe he'll go back to sleep on his own without it?

i have tried twice. both times he fussed for a while and then cried for a full 10 minutes before i caved and went in. sure enough, as soon as he had his paci, he went RIGHT back to sleep - i mean within 30 seconds to a minute.

i guess it's not the worst thing in the world but i hate stumbling out of bed 4 times a night Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and DH never hears him Chat Icon Chat Icon so it's always me that has to do it.

Re: i am desperate - need CIO advice

I did ir 2 weeks ago w/ DS. We did it for 2 nights. The first night he woke up 5 or 6 times and the longest time he cried was 15 minutes. The shortest was a minute. Then the next night we did it for the same and he slept from 8-4:30 straight, woke up at 4:30 for 2 minutes and went back to sleep and slept to 7. We had to stop though because DS got croup and obviously didn't feel well. If we would have continued it, I think it would have worked. I am going to start again next weekend because he only got over the coughing 2 days ago.

Re: i am desperate - need CIO advice

My DD is almost 5 mths, thankfully she never took a paci, and sleeps thru the night (usually) but on an off night, I will let her fuss or cry before I run in there.

The first few times were hard, but now she might whine for a minute or two and then will go back to sleep.

I'm actually debating on trying to put her down and CIO at bed time, b/c I usually will rock her...

tonight she was screaming b/c she was sooo over tired...I'm just scared of getting her used to being rocked. So I think sooner rather than later I'll start this.

DS is 7 1/2 months & while awake he can totally get the binky in his mouth! At night it's like he sometimes forgets he can, so I am in the same boat! I am leaving like 10 in there by both hands & hoping fo rthe best tonite because I am resigned NOT to go in there!

I think for you it will be like Ali said....do CIO all the way if you think you guys & DS can handle it, but the binky seems to be his soothing thingChat Icon It will be tough!

DD does this too at night of late she wakes up and fuss just for the pacifier once its back in her mouth she goes right back to sleep. She sleeps in the bed with us (thansk to DH another habit to break) but its easy just to stick it back in her mouth so I dontr lose too much sleep but still Chat Icon Chat Icon nonetheless

Can it be that he might be a little hungry and the paci soothes that?

Nah. If he's truly hungry, the pacifier wouldn't do it and he'd still cry. Or at least this is the case for my ds. Chat Icon

definitely not, i feed him right before he goes down for the night and he usually starts waking up 2-3 hours later.

Probably not, bc my DS is almost 5 months and wakes two time a night for a bottle i've tried giving him the paci and he won't "accept" it when he is hungry.

I feel your pain tho bc he is almost 5 months old and I keep getting up twice a night!
