I am SO MAD now I am ready to change religions - warning: if you are Catholic you may be offended

I was raised Catholic. I went to Catholic Schools almost all my life. I used to sing in the choir at the Church. I used to be a Church youth group leader. I got married by Catholic church. My son was baptized in the Catholic Church... confirmations, DONATIONS AND MORE DONATIONS, PROTESTS in front of the big Church in Rockville Center when Bishop McGann wanted to tear down our church because he said Spanish people were too "cheap" and weren't donating enough (he won that one by the way).... I've done it all.

And now, I've been asked to be a Godmother. So I call my Church (the same church I was married in and baptized in) and ask for a letter of sponsorship. And because I chose NOT TO LIE to the priest, the same priest who KNOWS ME from Catholic HS, and tell him that i attend Mass every Sunday (because I don't), I am actually being DENIED the letter. I am positively LIVID right now. I told him it's been a few months since I've been to Mass and pleaded with him. At one point the priest actually said to me with a smug chuckle "well, start coming to Mass and maybe we can talk."

I won't write the expletives that are going through my mind right now because I suppose that would be bad.

I was so upset that DH actually called and pleaded with priest. He basically told my husband, not in so many words, that if I would have just lied it would have been no problem.

Moral of the story: LIE to Catholic Church if you need something from them (Baptism, Marriage, Sponsorhip, etc). Nice Christian lesson there.

I am SO DISGUSTED right now.

I am not surprised. Some churches don't even require a letter of sponsorship.

I would tell the priest that you are switching churches and they should not expect your donations any longer. Maybe that will change his mind.

Sounds like the power goes to this guy's head. You would think with all of the scandals of late, that they would be happy to have people staying and willing to be godparents and raise their children Catholic.

Is this parish where you currently live? Can you register at another parish and ask for a letter a few weeks later from them? I'd be really mad if I were you too, the inconsistencies and arbitrary decisions some of these pastors make are hard to take.

i have a similar story. My uncle passed away suddenly of a heart attach two months before my cousins (his daughters) communion.

The priest met with each parent before the communion, and when he met with my aunt he told her that she doesnt dontae any $$ to the church and should be ashamed of herself!!

my aunt responded that she throws $$ into the bin at mass and doesnt use the envelopes. His response was to start, because they track it!!!

Then she replied, well my husband just died, I have no $$ for you and left.

I hear ya- I am getting more and more fed up with the church these days-

My Brother and his wife had to bring her preist from PA to NC to perform the wedding b/c the local presit would not marry them

they have both recieved all the scaraments and have the proof

how unchristian is that? but they were allowed to use the church and make a donation of course

I guess being catholic doesn't carry across state lines?

Let me tell you...after being a Catholic School teacher for two years, I am totally and completely DONE with the catholic church.

Sad that is has to be that way, but I saw SO much hypocrisy that it was disgusting. I won't tell what school I worked in, but making the salary I made was a slap in the face in itself. When we all attended the Christmas party at the Pastor's "mansion" right next door to the school, we were absolutely flabbergasted, and saw right away where all of the money was going. The entire place was done in marble, there was a 60" flat screen TV on the wall, not to mention a gourmet kitchen, complete with Coke soda dispenser.

I think the Diocese of Rockville Centre is one of the most disgusting institutions out there. My mom is one of the many protesters who stand outside of the Cathedral on Sunday mornings, trying to get Bishop Murphy OUT.

I had church issues too....I was humiliated IN CHURCH by a priest - the same priest that was supposed to be performing our marriage.

Rich and I were in church on Ash Wednesday...we don't usually attend mass regularly, but we were starting. This man had the nerve to come over to us, put his hands up to his face and exclaim, "wow - what are you doing here?! What's your name again?!" - sarcastically, implying that we don't go often enough. I wrote a letter to his attention and basically asked him to hand our file to another priest. He called me in response to the letter and said "We haven't ever noticed your name in the basket - just showing up is not enough, you know."

I didn't even tell my Mom this - she would be livid. I'm so done with this church...we're marrying there to appease our parents (his more than mine, i think.)

I'm so sorry.......... I'm also catholic and found myself having to lie in order to be married in my church......it really is ridiculous........ Is the baby being baptized in that church? If not, I would go to that church and try again there... I know it bites, but I'm sure you don't want to miss out on being a Godmother

Im not suprised, this is another reason I stay out of the church. It all comes down to the dollar bill.
