BabyAvocado has listed the main reasons why I have become a "lapsed" catholic.

I see the Methodist and Presbyterian churches near my house having community parties and events to raise $, not asking for handouts. I would like to belong to a loving, Christian community, not be chastised for not attending mass all the time. If God hears us, then he knows I pray all the time.

I can go on but I will leave it at that....Chat Icon Chat Icon

Don't they also take up collections at mass? A collection isn't unique to the Catholic faith. Chat Icon

They may take up collections at other Christian faith masses too, but what I am looking for is more of a sense of community and spirituality vs. rules and collections.

That is horrible. Some priest can really put on this holier then thou attitude. A priest told my sister that if she was divorced she wouldn't be able to be on the alter at my wedding. Chat Icon

I'm suprised you need proof. Is there any chance that you or your mom have a communion cert or confirmation cert of yours? Then you can cut out the middle man.

I can understand your frustrations! Your godchild must be in a really strict parish. In ours, the godparents didn't need any letters or anything like that and actually only 1 godparent has to be catholic. For my sisters my step brother was the godfather and he is Lutheran. Maybe the baby can be baptized in a less strict parish??

What a jerk! OMG...some of them unfortunately are like that...ugh!

Oh I lie all the time...you HAVE to in order to get somewhere with them...to me a priest is just a person, the same as you and me...and that is also the reason why I don't attend the confession.

My sister had a similiar situation when she was asked to be her godsons confirmation sponsor. She need her confirmation certificate from her church and they wouldn't give it to her because she wasn't married in a Catholic Church. One thing had nothing to do with another and the priest actually said if her and her husband would like to be married "again" in the church then she could receive her certificate. I called the Rockville Center and told on this priest from Merrick and said just because my sister wasnt marrried in church her and her husband are committed to each other and are raising my niece Catholic and one thing has nothing to do with one another. I also said you wonder why so many people are leaving the Catholic Church because the priests make up the rules as they go along. My sister did receive it in the end.

I think hypocrisy runs rampant in any religion - including the Catholic church.

Sandra -

write a letter to Bishop Murphy. Someone close to me had a problem getting an annulment & a well worded letter did the trick.

I realize you're getting the letter from DH's parish but he should be made aware of the situation.

I have had such a hard time with the church in the last few years. As someone who was raised in the church, attended a catholic grammar school, all girls high school, catholic college and catholic law school, I am saddened by the state of the church. I baptized my youngest with a heavy heart but nonetheless chose to do so. Ultimately I decided to view it as "culture". Just as my children are Italian, French and German, they are catholic.

I have to however add that I have many friends who have chosen to leave the church. I totally understand this decision and in my heart believe that the church is its own worst enemy. That is why the growth in the catholic church is occurring in South and Central America and not in the U.S. I think the best we can hope for is a break from Rome and an American catholic church and possibly a more foward thinking Pope. But who really knows.

It galls me to think that the members the church should be courting, they are so willing to lose. Good luck however you chose to handle this situation.

We lied at pre-cana- we said the reason why we want to get married is so we can have children.
Our real reason for marraige is that we love each other and want to commit. The purpose of our marriage is not to make Catholic babies. If it happens great but that's not why we got married.
Oh yea and another rant- the priest that married us- Father Tom Saloy was charged with possesion of child pornography.

Just so you know where I'm coming from- I went to 8 years of Catholic school.

Re: I am SO MAD now I am ready to change religions - warning: if you are Catholic you may be offended

OMG I feel you. My family are active members of the church. My Dad is in choir and a member of the finance comitee. I was in choir and was an usher when I was younger. My brother was also in choir. My brother and myself made all of our sacraments there. Then, when my brother passed away, my mom wanted a mass said for him and they told her no, it was too booked up. She pleaded with them to just add his name to the list and they refused. We told them we are active members and spoke with the priest. My mom left in tears. Then, when I was getting married there about 2 years later, the priest asked why I don't go as much. I told him it was hard because my brothers funeral was there and it sometimes brings back bad memories. He basiclly didn't care and told me if he doesn't see me, I am not getting married there. So then I left in tears. It's such a shame what it has become. And specificlly my priest, its sad to say is an a$$.
