I feel like a bit of a hypocrite. . .
So as most of you know, I was a McCain supporter. Not because I thought he was the most amazing candidate ever presented and not because I thought Obama was the worst. I respect him as a person and his stance is more in line with my political views.
But a few things happened this week that made me SO happy that Obama won.
First of all, my cousins in Italy got together and celebrated ( with pancakes! ) that he had won and it really gave me an insight on how the rest of the world really is depending on his election and presidency to give them HOPE about the future of America and America's foreign relations.
Then, I came home to find my niece and nephew, who are biracial, wearing shirts that said "Future President" it was something so silly but it really put it all in perspective for me. They had never seen anyone that looked like THEM become president - and my niece who is nine was so proud and energized by the election and it made me REALLY understand that it could encourage her to achieve her own goals!
And finally, I hope I don't offend with this last part. When my sister got engaged to a man of a different race, my parents basically went into mourning. They were mourning the loss of their daughter. Slowly, they came around, attended the wedding and accepted my BIL into our family. My mother was on the phone with her sister in Italy and said that she was so happy that Obama had won and that it meant that her grandchildren could one day hold such a high position.
So, lest I be viewed a turncoat I still don't agree with him politically - but I can see how Americans made the right choice in this election.

I don't think you are a hypocrite at all. I think the sentiment you are feeling is wonderful. I too was amazed by how people all around the world were celebrating.
I think that this election was historic in many ways. Not just the outcome, but all around. Not only can little children of biracial or other minority backgrounds know they can be president someday, but little girls can also hold that goal in their sights.

You are not even close to being a hypocrite!!!!
But I am happy to hear your new view on the situation.......
But I wonder, and we chatted about this at work because someone else mentioned it.....and I know that it's more of a symbolic thing, but....
Don't your sister and BIL ALREADY encourage your neice and nephew to reach for the stars and be anything they put their minds to? Please don't be offended by this, we were just talking about it yesterday, this is why I bring it up....
I would just think that ESPECIALLY being biracial that the parents would try to hammer that point home even more......

Re: I feel like a bit of a hypocrite. . .
political leanings and emotional impact are not mutually in or exclusive.
the idea that MY future child could now have a change at something like this is not lost on me either.
ETA: G, it's not about teaching or not teaching your children to reach for the stars...you always do that...but (going with the analogy) you needed that extra boost to get them through the atmosphere that was holding them back.
this historical event has provided that extra thrust to turn it from dream to reality.
I hope this makes sense

I can't speak for Tilde - but I'm sure parents of biracial children do encourage their children to be the best they can be. It's just that now they have an amazing role model to point to as well.

Yes, of course. But I think it is easy to say something but unless they SEE it for themselves. . .it is hard to grasp.
Trust me, my niece and nephew are told that they are the most beautiful, smartest and most talented children in the world on a daily basis - its a wonder that they have any friends.

I agree. Its also called acceptance.
Its funny, my cousin in Paris e-mailed me the day after the election about it. I didn't realize how closely he was following it. I know my family in Israel were following it very heavily. It really has such a global impact.
And its wonderful how a new generation of children, especially girls, are growing up feeling that THEY TOO can be president!

First off I don't think you are a hypocrite.
I did want to say that what you said above is so true, the way young minority children now see themselves and the potential of their futre ws changed by this election.
I don't know if you saw the video I posted about the kids at the Ron clark academy, the little boy in the video couldn't even speak because he was overwhelmed with emotions at the unlimited possiblity of his future now.
If you want to see it the little boy speaks around 58 seconds into the video.

that's why enjoyed watching the BBC's coverage so much.
they really focused on the world view, and brought home just how closely the WORLD was watching...how important it really is to the rest of the world.

Re: I feel like a bit of a hypocrite. . .
I don't think you're being a hypocrite unless you previously didn't like him because of his race -- which you didn't. We can all appreciate the historic and social significance of the outcome of the election without having to agree with Obama politically.
Equality is about being EQUAL, not superior. We all have just as much of a right to dislike Obama as a Presidential candidate as we do anyone else who runs. It doesn't make you a hypocrite just because you're not devastated that he won or because you can recognize the good in him and in his election.

I recently saw the Chris Rock special. I don't know if anyone else caught it but he made a point that speaks to your question I think...
He said that he hoped Obama won (among other reasons) so that when he tells his children that they can be anything they want to be, they may actually BELIEVE him.
He said that white parents will tell their children they can be anything they want to be and they believe it because they see it every day.

Re: I feel like a bit of a hypocrite. . .
I am going to put this out there...
What do people here and around the world really expect from Obama? Is he going to 'save the world?' Yes, many do not like Bush, I am not crazy with him either, but is the world's view based upon Iraq? Our relations with whom will now be better? Relations with most of Europe is good (actually few have now elected conservative governments), relations with China and Russia probably won't change, and unfortunately, nothing is ever said about S. or Central America.
As far as we go, there was a soundbite of a woman celebrating yelling "now I don't have to worry about putting gas in my car, I don't have to worry about my mortgage'. People can't really believe this, can they?
Yes a change was needed, although Obama's economic policies scare me a bit, what do we expect now?
Just stirring the pot a bit here.

Well, in reference to my post. My mom, niece and nephew know NOTHING about politics, economy or anything like that. For them, this is just a historical election because of who was running and who won - it has nothing to do with policies.
I guess, what I was trying to say is that I can appreciate the HOPE that he brings to people without really agreeing with his actual policies.
