I can see and understand the sentiment, it doesn't make you a hypocrite at all. It sent out an extremely positive message that anyone can acheive their dreams.

Two points though, and this goes back to my posts from earlier this week.

1. Couldn't your relatives or anyone else for that matter feel the same sense of pride BEFORE the election was over? I mean the very fact that he broke the barrier and became a candidate sends an awesome message. Granted, winning is the holy grail, but running in and of itself is something that everyone can point to and tell their children that dreams can come true, no matter what.

2. Suppose McCain had won. Couldn't we make the same case that mothers could tell their daughters that their dreams could be achieved, because the gender barrier would have broken by Sarah Palin, like her or not.

Just trying to put some additional perspective.

And to answer a few posts - I have been thinking about this a bit since I last posted.

Yes, a women winning the VP would have been an amazing achievement too. But I feel that biracial children face a special challenge in this world. They may constantly feel like they have to "choose" what they are. They don't really "look" like either side of the family and their experience is never 100% like either side. Also, there is a pressure to never hurt one side by emphasizing the other. . . it is a daily struggle that even the youngest of children internalize. They need a great role model "just like them" in a way.

Also, I thought of a great example. If you are a young girl and your mother tells you every single day that you can be a doctor but you have NEVER seen a female doctor - there will always be that doubt in your mind like "Can women really BE doctors?" So then imagine that first time you SEE a female doctor and you realize "Oh wow, my mom was RIGHT I CAN BE a female doctor."

What a great post!!! I love to read stuff like this.

I am a HUGE Obama supporter, and not for the reasons that people might think. I PAINSTAKINGLY researched both candidates, their ideas for our country, decisions they had made in the past, etc. He just makes SO much sense for our country right now.

Unfortunately, as a resident of North Carolina, I am seeing MANY McCain supporters who are outraged and downright nasty about the fact that Obama won. I will be honest that if McCain had won, I'd be really upset--but I'd try my best to be positive about it and look forward to seeing what he would do with the country.

I just wish people would stop being so ANGRY about such a monumental moment in history! So it was a really nice change to read a post like yours.

You are not a hypocrite at all. My 4 biracial nieces/nephews are thrilled. They have all been following the election for months although only 1 was old enough to vote.

They have never been forced to "choose" but have all struggled with their personal identity. Living in Idaho and Indiana and not seeing many people who look like them certainly didn't help their internal struggles.

i don't think you're a hypocrite at all! I think you can defintiely still disagree with him politically, but can still appreciate the historical impact this has for people of color and for how the rest of world views the United States. LIke yourself, I supported McCain, but do appreciate the significance of his election.

You're not a hypocrite at all...I think your post is actually very telling. It makes me feel very positive about our future....a future of more tolerance and acceptance, I hope.
