I have over 200 oz. of frozen breastmilk...and no idea how to use it

So here's a question... Chat Icon

I have weaned DD down to 2 feedings a day from our previous 6. For the remaining 3-4 feedings, she is on straight formula.

A friend of mine asked me, "So, when are you going to use the frozen stuff?" and I had no idea! I know I want to use it (God knows I worked my tail off for it!) but I'm not sure when!

Should I give maybe 1 bottle a day of thawed milk along with the formula? DH wants to just start giving it to her when we run out of $ to buy formula Chat Icon but I also don't want to have to re-introduce the formula later.

Any ideas for me?

Start giving it now. You really don't want it to go past 6 months. Some say it shouldn't go past 3-4 months.

Really? We have it in the deep freezer (-12 degrees) and my LC said at that temp, we have up to a year. My oldest bag is from April.

Should I start by doing one bottle a day? I don't want to completely confuse her teachers at daycare either (They have to keep formula and BM separated).

Thank you, thank you Chat Icon Chat Icon

I started pumping every night before bed as soon as she could sleep through the night. Unfortunately, I've had to use my entire frozen stash twice before, and build it back up again.

Sometimes I got 10 oz a night, sometimes 4, but it all adds up over time Chat Icon

with a deep freezer it is longer (I think it's 6-12 months)

Why don't you just use it then go back to formula?

Maybe talk to the daycare and see what they suggest.

Can you use it to mix her cereal?

You could also donate it, I'm not sure how thats done, but I know it is an option. Maybe you could contact the NICU at a local hospital?

I would use it for DD. Most milk banks are not accepting milk right now because they are stocked, or so I have been told by the ones I contacted.

To help with not REintroducing formula....mix her bottles 1/2 & 1/2 with formula & BM....that was how I SHOULD have used mine up....but DS refused the BM after he got used to the formula so I had to throw out the BMChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

WOW, I didn't even think of that. THANK YOU for the heads-up!

Hey, if nothing else, it'll help me stretch the formula and save a few bucks, right? Chat Icon

Wow that is amazing! I am so jealous. I am pumping like crazy to have some built up for when I go back to work and I feel like I don't know if I will have enough. I get about 10 oz per day now when pumping.

That is awesome!!

Ivelysse, will you be pumping when you go back to work? It's tough but you CAN make it work. I had about 50 oz. in frozen stash when I went back, but I was actually able to keep on top of what she needed during my 2x daily pumps at school. If I was short, I almost always made up for it during that last pump of the night.

You can do it! Chat Icon

Personally, instead of 4 formula feedings I would do 1 BM and 3 FF to use the milk. DD is 20 months and 1x per week she gets thawed BM instead of cow's milk to use up the freezer stash.

I would mix BM & formula until dc gets used to BM again. If daycare insists on keeping them separate, then do it at home. I did the same only the opposite direction to get them used to formula when I decided to wean them. My daycare didn't mind, but I did mark the bottles because it looked different then the others. They knew always to give the BM/FF bottle first thing in the am when they were at the hungriest.

That's great!!! I would use some of it to mix her cereal and then maybe give it to her on weekends instead of formula? I would make sure to use it though....such a waste to get rid of it...

Beth- I am going to pump when I go back to work. The way my schedule is I can pump 2x/day at work and then BF when I get home from work. Liam isn't sleeping through the night yet so I don't know if I can get a big pump at the end of the day. But I try to pump now after each feeding since he only eats from one side. I should add up how much I have now. I probably have about 50 oz or maybe more.

Re: I have over 200 oz. of frozen breastmilk...and no idea how to use it

At the height of my pumping, I had 650 oz in the freezer. After I got through most of it, I saved a few bags for when he got sick (I have no idea if it's helpful, but if he has a cold, I like to be able to give him BM). So, I would use what you need to extend giving it to her, and then save a handful of bags for when she's under the weather.

Good for you! Chat Icon
