I Totally messed up! Vacation related
So, we have a Disney Cruise booked for this spring. I don't know how I did this but I realized yesterday that I booked it for the wrong week, meaning that instead of it being Spring Break week DD will have to miss a week of K.
It is fully paid for already and I tried to change it but there is no availability for the other cruise. What do I do? What do I tell her school?
I cannot believe I messed this up! This is so unlike me - I am usually so type A and never make these kinds of mistakes. I have been beating myself up since yesterday.

Isn't it considered an unexcused absence if she is not sick. Do I tell them the truth?

It is an unexcused absence but I don't think they really care at this age as long as the absences do not get excessive. We took DD on the cruise last year and took her out of school for the week. I told the attendance office and her teachers the truth, no one cared. In fact the last day of school before the cruise the principal told my DD to have fun!

I pull my kids out for a few days here and there. No one bats an eye, and no one says anything about it being unexcused. I would guess if your child missed A LOT of school, it could be an issue. I wouldn't lie, just tell them you are going away for a family vacation.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
I would be honest and say you accidentally booked it for the wrong time. Just ask if theres any work she would like you to do over the break.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
People do it all the time. My DS is in Kindergarten and we are taking him out as well for a few days. I plan on being 100% honest with his teacher and therapists and getting all his work ahead of time.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
Since K isn't state-mandated, you can legally keep DC out of Kindergarten for the entire year....
I wouldn't stress over it. This will give you a week to get ready, or a week to recover.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
I took my dd out 2x's for a week each. Any unexcused absence for 3 consecutive days or more gets reported up & you'll get a letter but it's just formality. I sent a note into the school & told them we were going away. Don't bother lying or making something up... it's not worth looking stupid when ur kid is telling everyone about Mickey :)
BTW: I request the work we'll miss & I bring a workbook for her to do. My dd enjoys the scholastic workbooks from Costco. I find family vacations as important as a week of school.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
I think it depends on the child and the school. I would absolutely take my DS without hesitation - he is ahead of where he needs to be right now and it would probably take him all of 20 min to do the few sheets of hw he will miss. I really don't feel he learns that much on a daily basis that a week would be an issue. He also hasn't really missed much school to date.

Re: I Totally messed up! Vacation related
Like the others have said, don't stress it. Tell the teacher you are going away and ask for the work she will miss. You can also maybe turn the trip into "project" that DD can share with her class when you get back.
Have fun, we went on the Fantasy in August, it was amazing

I was going to say the same, except I believe it might be in NYC.
Either way, DS is in K and they stressed that we need absence notes this year (same teacher as DS#1 and they did not stress this). i was thinking it's about APPR though and CYA for the teachers/schools

This..you can also ask her teacher to send you a homework packet.
