I want to discuss acrylic nails vs. CND Shellac UPDATE
I feel that it is time for me to take another break from acrylics. What I really need is a break from having to go to the salon or a break from having to go to the only salons whose acrylics I like. I don't live very close to those salons. Should I try the CND Shellac or does that tie me down to salon visits yet again? How quick are the manicures and how awful is it to remove this stuff? I am getting a haircut at a Cactus location and I am wondering if I should try it then.

What is this shellac??
It's like a cross between regular polish and UV gel. It is a polish that that lasts at leat 2 weeks. They cure it with a UV lamp. It's not thick like the other UV gels or like acrylic, though.
UPDATE: At Cactus they told me to have the acrylics off for a few weeks before trying Shellac. I have a feeling that nothing will really require less maintenance than acrylics but I want to try something new. I had the acrylics soaked off & got a manicure with clear polish today. I know that on my nails in this condition, any color would chip right away.

Re: I want to discuss acrylic nails vs. CND Shellac again
with the CND Shellac you will still need to go to the salon every 2-3 weeks but the manicures are very quick and the removal is simple. I have been getting it done for about 2 months now and I am literally in and out in about 45 minutes with removal. For the removal they just soak the cotton pads that come with it in acetone and wrap your nails in it for about 7-10 minutes, the polish then flakes off and there is no damage to your natural nail.

Thanks. You take it off & start over with each manicure, though, right?

Re: I want to discuss acrylic nails vs. CND Shellac again
I did the shellac twice so far. The first time I had a brown color and it lasted 3 weeks, I did have new growth but it still looked good. The second time I had a french and it only lasted a week. I don't think the second person did a great job because it was kinda thick and the first time wasn't thick at all.
I actually soak them off myself at home. Just use pure acetone and it comes off. My nails are still strong when I take it off.

this sounds like the opi gel manicure - is it the same thing?

I think it is similar but I looked around online and this has gotten better reviews so far. I think that this did a lot less damage to the nail underneath. FYI, I have not tried the OPI or this one yet.

no, it is not like the OPI - I never had the OPI done but I hear a lot of negative reviews about it. The Shellac has not caused any damage to my natural nails and I am hearing the same from others. In fact I heard that Shellac has taken off so well that "Creative Nail Design" - the company that makes it had it on back order because they didn't anticipate the demand for it - so I guess a lot of people are happy with it.

I go to Cactus and pay $30 but I have heard others charging a little more for it.
