i don't understand what the war is exactly over. why did russia invade? can you shed some light on it?
The real reason is that Georgia is about to become a member of NATO and Russia is trying to prevent this from happening.
MOSCOW, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will do everything possible to prevent its neighbors, Ukraine and Georgia, being admitted to NATO, the Russian foreign minister said on Tuesday.
"We will do everything possible to prevent the accession of Ukraine and Georgia to NATO and to avoid the possible worsening of relations with the alliance, its leading member states and our neighbors," Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with the Moscow-based Ekho Moskvy radio.

This is something that has been expected for a very long time, this time it started over South Ossetia, the breakaway region of Georgia. But after the attacks on South Ossetia Russia widened the attacks on other cities of Georgia, including the capital city Tbilisi.------------------->

U.S. President George W. Bush said on Saturday attacks by Russia on neighbouring Georgia outside the war zone of South Ossetia marked a "dangerous escalation" of the crisis and urged Moscow to halt the bombing immediately.
"I'm deeply concerned about the situation in Georgia," Bush said during a trip to the Olympics in Beijing. "The attacks are occurring in regions of Georgia far from the zone of conflict in South Ossetia. They mark a dangerous of escalation in the crisis."
He said the attacks were threatening peace in the region and that pro-Western Georgia, a former Soviet state that now wants to join NATO, was a sovereign nation and its territorial integrity must be respected.
Russian bombers widened their attacks on Georgia on Saturday after troops poured into South Ossetia on Friday, a move to counter a large-scale offensive by Georgia that was aimed at restoring control over the province it lost after a war in the early 1990s.

I'm so confused as to all of this, my mom started telling me about this back and forth with them. I have an aunt, uncle and cousin in the Ukraine. There's a lot of stuff that the news is NOT telling us. But based on what CNN is reporting Russia is claiming Georgia is attacking them and vice versa. All I know is this is just completely awful that it has even reached this level.
My mom was just saying the other day, please don't let it reach war but now there are thousands dead

Yes both sides are blaming each other for "starting it" but the fact remains that S. Ossetia is part of Georgia and even if Russia wants to control S.Ossetia why won't they just keep fighting there , there is no need for such aggression and no reason for bombing all the major cities. They have completely destroyed one of the big cities next to Tbilisi(capital city) which is few hrs away from the breakaway region. Ukraine has offered help with troops and is supporting Georgia 100%
My family is trying to escape before they start bombing there too, I am going to try everything to get them out and bring them here.
