If a boss can not be friends with employees....
on facebook and another employee sees a post that is against their job (and they do have up where they work), is it the responsibility of that other employee to rat on them? Why can't the boss take any type of action?

If you sign paperwork stating you are not supposed to be on facebook during working hours, then how is it enforced?

They signed that they wouldnt be on during working hours or get on using their work computer. What if they were at lunch? i find it hard to believe that anyone would sign something like that!

Is it possible that the person used their mobile device to go on? What kind of job doesnt have a lunch hour?

I am sure it is possible but to post badly about your job, is not permitted. I didn't say they did not post during lunch hour. It is obvious when they post though by the time indicated on facebook.

If they are using the office computer, the IT dept should be able to see who is visiting which websites for how long. Also, if it's this important to the company that employees not go on FB, they could restrict the sight so no one can access it through their computers.

Sorry, the way i read it at first sounded like you said they didnt have a lunch hour. As a coworker unless i didnt like the person i would never say anything about it. In fact id probably tell them to take it down before they got caught.

Very true but I don't understand why they even make you sign something when it is not really enforced.

I wouldn't rat on them. I would probably just tell the employee it's not a smart move and they may want to delete before someone else rats them out.

Why are you so concerned about it? Does involve you directly?

The I.T. dept should be logging/keeping track of company usage. Let them handle it and myob.

They can't do this if it is on a mobile device though. But it is still against company policy to post anything about your job.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
I am not really sure what the problem is. If you post something negative about your job, you should be dealt with. If you signed something forbidding it you should be fired.
Would I, as an employee at the same level report it? Probably not.
But, if someone did... oh well. The employee shouldn't have posted it. Facebook is not a sounding board to diss your employer. Don't be stupid. Pick up a phone and call your friend to ***** about work.

I agree. My question is how the person is dealt with though if the boss can not say anything.

Did you sign something saying you wouldn't be on a public forum all day? I dont really see the difference between FB and LIF. You are still abusing company time IMO.
Honestly, I would never rat anyone out. It sounds petty to me. MYOB.

Then I apologize. I just dont see why some people involve themselves in what shouldn't concern them. Not you, just commenting on the scenario.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
I used to rag on my job all the time on FB but I have a strict rule about not being friends on FB with coworkers. I think it's a lame policy...people have free speech and if they want to bash their job on FB so be it! All of my FB friends constantly vent about their jobs. To me it's no different than callin your friends to vent about work. I don't think action should be taken on this alone.
I do think action should be taken if he person posted from a work computer (regardless of what was posted) bc if they are on FB while they are not supposed to be than that's another issue. But if they posted from a phone...that is their property and I don't think anything should be done.
