Did you sign something saying you wouldn't be on a public forum all day? I dont really see the difference between FB and LIF. You are still abusing company time IMO.
Honestly, I would never rat anyone out. It sounds petty to me. MYOB.
I never said this was about me or my job.
Then I apologize. I just dont see why some people involve themselves in what shouldn't concern them. Not you, just commenting on the scenario.
I think because when they work with someone who is blatantly doing something they were told they could not do and would get fired for and continue to do it, they get annoyed.

Unless it directly affects me I don't give a rats @ss what people do and I sure as heck am not telling my boss nor do I care if it is from their work computer during work hour.
I feel like stuff like this bites you in. The @ss. You go and buy a pair of shoes online at work and they'll be on your case, not worth it. Leave as is. Don't go on lif because someone may say something kwim?

I am confused. Why can't the boss say anything???
I am assuming if they are not allowed to be friends with them and they only hear it second hand, they can't say anything. Again assuming so not really sure. I don't get it either.

I too am very confused. I deduced that someone bashed their job on FB but they signed something that said they cannot talk about their job on FB. If they posted on a personal computer on their own time, would that not violate their first amendment rights? Unless this scenario directly involved me, I'd stay out of it.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
The boss can take action. You can be fired. Right now the courts have been inconsistent waffling between freedom of speech, right to privacy & how you represent the company.
You can hire a lawyer, spend years addressing it & in the end, you'll be the person that was fired for your posts & every future employer will know about it once they google you.
Our staff handbook addresses social networking & part of that addresses acting professionally when representing the company. While you may not be representing the company in your personal profile, you are open to scrutiny if you're posting about the company. If your profile isn't locked down, if you put your company name in your profile, it's a risk you take.
I'm in HR. I don't need to tell anyone but I'd address it myself. I've defriended employees for posting drunken photos of them partying. Now, I'm not that much of a pill but if I saved your arse by sending you to rehab, the last thing you should do after friending me is post parties of your Mardi Gras party.

Bashed their job, which is not allowed, on company time.

Employee should not rat. Employee does not own company....... so why would this employee bother or care who signed what and posted on FB ?

I think employees start to care about what others are doing when they see preferential treatment or start doing the work of the slacker employee. There are countless posts on Career about unfair distribution of work.
As for ownership in the company, if it's not an employee shareholder type of situation, I believe in workplace ownership. We all contribute (or don't) to employee morale and work on behalf or our employers. I'm not advocating ratting out fellow employee's FB - or LIF - complaints, but we do owe it to our employers & to ourselves to make the work a better place to be. Especially considering you're there 1/3 or more of your day.
To the OP - not sure if this is a real life situation as I haven't read through it, but if so it's a personal call. I'd be aware that showing your boss someone else's FB page trhough your FB page also means you were on FB & make sure your FB posts are all outside of work hours if your company has a policy.

I get that. Trust me, it happens at my job all the time. In fact, it happened today! But I would never rat on someone for it. It's frustrating but not that serious.
Also, is it LEGAL for them to force you to sign something saying you won't post about your company on FB? I totally understand the thing about not going on FB (though if they are serious, IT should block it or at least monitor it), but not being able to post something on your OWN site? Mmmm that doesn't sound legal to me.

If the company is THAT against facebook they should block employees from accessing it ASAP My company doesn't let us on FB on their network. Easy breezy. Now we can get on on our phones of course- but they can't control that.
I'm not sure why access is even allowed if the company has a policy against being on that site during work hours.

Agreed.
I don't even understand the scenario, but I think everyone should MYOB. Unless it is my employee or I am responsible for their work, I don't care what others do.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to force anyone to sign anything. A company has the right to ask you to sign & state that you agree & will comply with their employment guidelines (provided they are not asking you to do something illegal). You're not forced to sign just like they are not forced to provide you with a job.
The recent court cases have gone back & forth regarding wrongful terminations, freedom of speech, etc for disparaging your employer on FB. It also depends on what you are complaining about. The latest cases are: http://www.natlawreview.com/article/status-update-fired-social-media-great-way-to-market-company-it-also-great-way-to-get-fired-
Bottom line if you don't want to be looking for a job while your court cases is decided, comply with your company's guidelines.

I guess this is what I'm getting at. It seems to be a grey area right now. Personally though, I would think that venting on FB about your job would fall under freedom of speech- unless of course you're disclosing privileged information.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
We actually have an entire Social Media Policy at my company. If you are found to violate anything in it, they use the broad term "corrective action up to and including termination"
One of the items in there states that on any of your social media sites, you cannot defame the company. So I guess talking trash about your comany would fall under that category.
I guess it's kind of "use at your own risk". People have to realize that not everyone is a MYOB type of person. If you have friends from work on Facebook, even if you aren't friends with your boss, I think it's important to watch what you say. Just like something you tell a co-worker in confidence can be told to your boss, the same can be said for things you put on Facebook... it's just a different type of media today.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
If I read the situation correctly -- NO I would not say something to a boss/HR unless it directly affected me.
We have that issue here in my office (even though it was blocked from the Network and it is company policy that Management can't be friends with employees) and everything gets back to the bosses some way or another. There is always some connection or someone else willing to rat someone out.
Common sense should tell someone to not post things about your job unless you are looking to get caught or in trouble. But some people just don't get it.

Re: If a boss can not be friends with employees....
I do not friend any person who works for my company and I blocked a good number of them from ever finding my page. I also made my profile not searchable on both Facebook and Google. You can not be too careful these days.
