If leggings are not pants...
for me, there are leggings and there are stretchy-pants.
stretchy pants i wear to yoga. and i wear as pants for casual days. they aren't skin tight, and they're much thicker. you see my shape, but that's it. i find them at daskin and workout stores/ depts.
leggings are thinner, and lighter. i do not wear them as pants, but will wear them as a layer.

They are hosiery. You usually find them in the hosiery section of a department store, with the socks & tights & stockings.
They are sold in the regular section of most stores. I've never seen them labeled as hosiery before.

this exactly!! i don't understand why anyone would think they are acceptable without a shir tlong enough to cover their behinds!
the other day, on the train back home, there was a woman standing in front of me (i was sitting) and she was wearing a very short tshit that hit her navel, and a pair of almost see thru leggings. they actually were see through enough for me to see that she was not wearing any underwear.  since she was so fair skinned and her leggings were black, but stretched thin, i could see her skin tone through them. half the men around me were oggling her. RIDICULOUS!!!!!! who would think this appropriate?

I guess I should go home from work and change since I have on leggings with a long blouse and boots...
I think if the shirt is long enough you can totally wear them as "pants" and if they are dressed up enough they are fine apparel for work. In fact, I would say 3 out of my 5 work outfits each week are some form of legging.

HAHA ME TOO!!! I'm in the office, semi-long button down shirt wiht a longer tank under, black leggings and fancy boots. Oh well.....

I absolutely think they can work as pants IF they are thick AND the bootie region is covered! Long button up & a belt or a long sweater & boots or flats IMO look great. But it depends on how & who's wearing it.
To me, if you can bend your knee to your chest & see skin-tone, then its too thin! I have seen many women who just don't get that we can see through to your underwear!

I totally agree. I have no idea why leggings are not pants. I wear leggings as pants as I would any other pair of yoga-type work out pants... I think the problem is people confusing footless tights with leggings. I am talking about thick workout style leggings, they are pants to me.
Footless tights = tights, in the hosiery section
Leggings = pants, in the workout section

Skinny jeans ARE pants and should not be compared to leggings. They are made of a thicker fabric, outfitted with pockets and not as tightly form fitting as leggings . My butt is rarely covered in skinny jeans but always covered in leggings.
