Re: If you are from Long Island, what High School did you attend, and
William Floyd.
And I turned out to go on and do great things with my life.
When I went there it was different than it is now. I loved my high school years. My friends, teachers, community involvement, etc.
I know its changed now because my family still lives there and my brother just graduated last year (we are 14 years apart) so I'm familiar.
I live in NJ now.
Would I send my kids there?
no, i wouldn't. I came to the realization that with a school like Floyd where the population is dense and the needs are so diverse, the reason why I turned out fine was that I was a naturally inclined student from a stable family. However, I think if I had a special need or was just not so into school I could have fallen through the cracks. And since my son is now considered "special needs" I would be hesitant.
I will say though, I respect each and every teacher who works in that district. There are still good people who live in that area. I know that first hand because i have so many roots there! However, there are so many not so stable families and to see those children struggle and grow up to be struggling teens must be extremely difficult for them. It seems almost impossible that the district can financially be equipped to handle it.

I went to Northport HS. I would send my kids there in a second. My mother was a teacher and administrator there up until about a year ago when she retired. So I can say the schools are still as good as they were when I was there. Great programs and great sports teams.

I went to Bay Shore.
I liked it a lot. Bay Shore was one of the first districts to have learning disabled children be mainstreamed and they also had a very robust AP course of programs. The school was racially and ethically diverse - and the student body was large enough to find a group that you really clicked with.. but there wasn't that 'division' among classes and cliques that you see in movies about high school. Jocks, cheerleaders, burnouts, punks.. whatever.. everyone kind of just hung out together. I never really saw a lot of bullying or cruelty come from any group... probably because of the diversity.
We also had great arts programs, wonderful athletic programs and a lot of legacy families that were invested in being a part of keeping the school at the top of it's game.
I would have no problem with my children going to BSHS - my nephew went there and several of my friend's children are in the district. But we don't live in that town. So my boys will likely go to Sayville HS. Which will hopefully give them as good of an experience as I had.
i completely and totally agree with this. i loved my education at bay shore and i would send my dd there in a heartbeat, but we're living in brooklyn right now so the likelyhood of that happening is small. however, bay shore would be my number one choice (and it kills me that it has such a bad reputation...).
I agree as well. I am a Bay Shore resident, born & bred.. I would send my children there in a heartbeat. I want nothing more than for my children to have real life experience in a diverse school setting. I was just at a football game this afternoon and it was so nice to see all of the HS kids hanging out and greeting EVERYONE... I don't care about the bad reputation, I think it works to our advantage.. Bay Shore SD is the best kept secret

I went to Mineola High School and I would totally send my daughter there if we could have afforded a house there.
I think a child's education has more to do with the parents and the child than with the school district.

John Glenn in Elwood. Very small school. My grad class had 143 people. I would have no problem sending my kids there but DH is from West Islip and I think that's where we're going to stay. Ontop of academics, I want a school with a stand-out sports program.
We are in West Islip for the sports program too....glad to hear we aren't the only loonies

I went to Commack, and I don't know if I'd want my kids to go there. 1 - it was extremely competitive. parents were INSANE, and that leaked over onto the kids. 2 - no diversity. I feel this is important. 3 - there were a lot of "rich" kids and there was a lot of pressure to keep up with the Joneses.
Overall, I enjoyed HS, and I certainly do not think its a bad place to live or go to school, but those three things always stand out to me.
I think there is alot more diversity there now then when we went to school (I think you graduated a year or 2 after me)

Re: If you are from Long Island, what High School did you attend, and
West Islip and i still live here. All 3 of my DC go to school here. I'm very happy with the schools. I wish it was easier though for special ed classes like resource etc. With one of my DC, i had such a hard time getting him to receive any services. Finally i got him what he needs, and he is doing so much better. For sports this is an outstanding district as well, although sports is not as important to me as education is... its a great district IMO.. we plan on staying till our youngest graduates, then we are GONE ! LOL Can hardly afford it now!

I went to all Lynbrook schools on the south side.. I specifically bought my house in this district so my DD can go to the same schools.. I have to say we are a great district.. I have wonderful memories growing up.. I live 12 blocks from my mother and i have noticed that most of the people I grew up with didnt leave either!!
I also went to all Lynbrook schools, but North side. My mom still works in the district and says that they are still great schools, but some aspects have gotten worse in the past few years. I guess there has been quite a bit of teen (and middle school ) pregnancy there, and the drug use has increased . I don't have kids yet, but I would probably send them through and see how it went!

I went to Pierson HS in Sag Harbor. I also went to Sag Harbor Elementary.
I loved my school-my graduating class was about 55 people---all close all the way until Graduation.
If I could afford to live in Sag Harbor again when I have school aged children, I would not hesitate to put them into the school district!

Lindenhurst HS.
I don't know how it is now- but I loved it when I was there- so if it hasn't changed much I would have no problem sending my children to school there.
However, we bought a house in West Islip, so they will be going to that district.

I also went to Centereach...and NO I would not send my kids there. My parents neighbors have told me horror stories about Herion in the schools. It was starting getting pretty noticbile my senoir year, with constant locker raids, diguised as fire drills. I remember one girl having a bad trip in the girls bathroom, and it was treated like everyday activity. 5 yrs later when my sister was a senior, there was a fight in the cafe, and one of the lunch attendents stepped in to stop the fight, only to have her Gun fall out onto the floor...she was an undercover cop. I think that in the 15 years since I have graduated that things have gotten worse not better.

Re: If you are from Long Island, what High School did you attend, and
Harborfields.
I liked that the classes (at the time) were small (I graduated with less than 200 kids), and our teachers really cared about us.
The things I didn't like was that we (like most schools), had a pretty defined clique system that was in place from about the 5th grade on. It was both a blessing and a curse to be with the same kids from Kindergarten through to the 12th grade, but it was what it was, and really, we didn't know any differently. It's only now in hindsight and with further mixing with others from other districts in NY and other places, that I realize how different our existence was.
If we were to move back to LI, while I wouldn't want my children to go to the same school I went to, I wouldn't be against it for reasons other than I want them to have a slightly different experience and identity than myself.
