If you are invited to a communion, do you attend the church or...
Just the party? Just wondering what the norm is. They are friends of mine and not relatives.

I've never been to the church. I've been to a communion party that was the next day after the church.
Although I haven't been to too many communions.

Usually just the party. Depending on the parish, the church part could be 2+ hours with not enough seating.

Actually, many times the church is unable to seat every child making communion and ALL of their immediate and extended family. It's not uncommon for the church to request only the immediate family and maybe 2-4 extra guests per family. I've been invited to many communions/confirmations where they asked us to attend the party only because of the limitations within the church.
If everyone is welcome into the church that day it's nice if you can attend but it's NOT a must IMO. Even with my own kids, I had family/friends that didn't make it to the church for their christening but were at the party. I didn't think anything of it.

Usually just the party unless it is a very close family member. In our church there are a lot of kids making communion and each family is assigned a pew. There are only a few rows left over in back for extra people and those seats fill up fast.

Friends - just the party.
Usually this. For a close family friend we went to the church for dh since he was going through rcia. We did not go to another close family friend and they expected us. I think it depends on the size of the party too.

Some churches limit the number of guests the communion child can have present at the church because of limited space. But even if that is not an issue, unless you are close family or friends, I would skip the church and just go to the party

for my nephew we didn't go to the church cant remember if we were invited or not but with 2 small kids I see how they are acting and if we are running on time or now.

Just the party unless we are specifically asked to go to the church. Many times seating is an issue and each child is limited to a small number of guests.

I'm Jewish and I have to say I'm blown over by these responses.
My GF's daughter had her first communion last year. I would never think of going to the restaurant for lunch without going to Church. (I actually enjoy church, but the Church changed everything....so I'm a VERY confused Jew)
Sometimes people cant make the service for one reason or another. And that is understandable. But I would think Church is the more important of the two, no?
Is this a Christian thing where its "accepted" to just go to the party? NO FLAME AT ALL. I'm asking an honest question.
ETA: If seating is not an issue.....

I don't know if its a thing or not I feel like it kind of falls into the same category as a wedding, though everyone is invited to the church portion not everyone attends and its not frowned upon or expected.
FTR I don't have a great relationship with my nephew mainly cause of his mom (my brother passed away) so not attending to me was no big deal but for certain other people I would make a real effort to attend if I cant than I cant I don't feel to bad about it.

Unlike a bar mitzvah, where the ceremony is just about one child, in most churches, the communion service is for many children at one time - so there literally is just not room for every child to have 50-100 guests (or however many). It is perfectly "normal" to only go to the party and not the church, for a communion. For the communions I have been too, usually just very close family (parents, grandparents, godparents, close aunts & uncles & cousins) go to the church - if there is room. And even then, I have been to some where the child's family had to make a "cutoff list" of who could go to the church because the number of guests allowed was very limited.

I'm Catholic and of all the churches I have belonged to, they always have an open door policy for guests. You may not be able to sit with the family celebrating, but most modern churches now have cameras/tvs to allow parishioners to watch the ceremony from all areas of the church. This was the case for my wedding and my DD and DS's baptism.
I would attend both celebrations. You can't have the party with the religious sacrament. Regardless if you are religious or not.

If you are able to go, its nice. But the last couple of communions we've been invited to, parishes have been giving a max of 5 tickets per family so we've been unable to attend even though we wanted to.
