If you are ok with answering...your electric and gas usage...
so, we got our electric and gas bills for last month.
let me just say I was ...it wasn't what I expected, especially since we only live in the house on the weekends!!!!
anyway, we compared our utiliy bills from the house to those from our apt..
somehow we used TWICE as much electricity in the house and TWENTY times as much gas....and we occupy it HALF the time.
our gas usage was 105 ccf's.
is that POSSIBLE?
are you comfortable sharing yours?

Is your heat gas? Do you have multiple zones so that you can turn some down low even when in the house?
Also, make sure the room that the thermostat is in is not drafty. We had that problem and the heat would never turn off since that room was cooler than the rest of the house. But the rooms upstairs were a good 10-15 degrees warmer than downstairs.

actually the thermostat is in one of the warmer rooms in the house. it's definitely not constantly on, and I NEVER have it above 68 degrees.
we do have gas heat. I don't think we have multiple zones...we have forced air...old school style (it was put in with the advent of heating systems other than fireplaces...my house is OLD!)
thanks

I rent an apartment so my figures won't help you but did someone read your meter or are they estimating based on last year's usage?

Re: If you are ok with answering...your electric and gas usage...
I have a 1400-1500 SF house. Forced hot air and my gas bills are 135.00. Electric is 235.00 . they are down from previous years. We keep the heat on 66 during the day and 60 at night before we go to bed. Turn it back up to 66 when we wake up. I try and walk around shutting ALL the lights off!
We have electric stove/oven and electric dryer. The only gas we use is for hot water and heat. Edited to add

I'm positive the gas usage is because your house is so old. So bad insulation, old windows etc.
YOu could look into getting more insulation put in, or put that plastic stuff on the window.
As far as electric, make sure every single thing is unplugged when you leave for the week. Your tv, toaster, everything. They all use electricty doing nothing.

my house is about 1600sf and my gas bill is $84 balanced billing (gas heat, stove, dryer) and $135 for LIPA (not sure why its so high, grr).
We replaced the windows last year - the heat definitely kicks on a lot less than it did with the old windows. I would see if you have any drafts and try to seal them, recaulk the frames, etc.
was it an estimated bill? the first bill we got for heat was $350, I almost died. but it wasnt a real meter read.

I pay $285 for gas and $220 for electric. It seems high to me and 7 yrs ago, it was a fraction of the price. I am also on a buget so the bill comes in the same every month. You may want to look into that.

Re: If you are ok with answering...your electric and gas usage...
Jess, did they actually come and read your meters or was it estimated? When we first moved into our house the gas bills were insane. The people who lived here before us didn't have the heat working right and had it turned up to like 80-90 degrees. They were estimating our usage based on the previous year's - which wasn't for us but the people who lived hear before us. Check the reading on your bill and on your actual meter to see if they got an accurate #.
