my neighbor keeps asking us but we are tapped out for cash. I told them next year, it save us some cash but i thought that was weird sharing expense of a fence. Then who's fence is it? But since fencing is so expensive I don't care.

Absolutely not. I feel if you want the fence, you pay for it. I think it's rude to ask your neighbors to chip in! We paid for our own fence. We did not hook into our neighbors either. What happens if/when they move and the new homeowners are a$$holes? Not something I want to deal with.

We recently replaced ours.
I didn't ask the neighbors.
But 1 offered to split the cost on his side. The other never offered.

we haven't had the situation yet, but this is how I feel too. If they're clearly fine not having a fence at all, I don't think they'd want to pay for one to reduce my cost.

We offered several times when our neighbors did the dividing fence and they graciously declined stating that we made so many improvements to the home since we moved in that they would pay for it all. We have wonderful neighbors!

I agree, the only thing I may ask our future neighbors to chip in on is having a tree that is right on the property line cute down.

No. We did not ask. One is a rental behind us. The other is an elderly woman. We are in a corner lot. And a BIG lot.

Nobody offered either.

But we did not do our fence hoping one of them would chip in. We needed the fence for my dogs.

I have neighbors on both sides and only one offered to pay for their half, however they never did pay us for it! Chat Icon

I agree. We never asked our neighbors to chip in when we had our fence done. I don't really understand how this came about as the norm.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

Our neighbors didn't ask us but insinuated that they would appreciate it. Due to other purchases and the fact that we were in our home less than a year, we could only afford a few hundred dollars. It didn't amount to half of the cost, but if it was me, I would have appreciated it. I'm not so sure that they did. They were less friendly after the fence was up.

It's a long story with lots of details but suffice to say, I thought it was a nice gesture on our part. I wouldn't outright ask anyone. But I probably wouldn't have refused it from our other neighbor who took down their fence after ours was up, so they are now enjoying it too.

All I know is, I like our fenced yard and so do our dogs. Chat Icon

DH and I plan to have a fence put in at the end of the summer/early fall (after we finish our patio work), and we will not ask our neighbor if they want to chip in (we only have neighbors on one side). They have no plans to fence in their yard, so I wouldn't even think of asking them!

I didint ask and Im not sure I really get why you would even ask. IMO it would just open a can of worms in the future if there are repairs and what happens when someone new moves in and they are told the fence is theirs......Just too many issues can pop up. I wanted a fence so we paid or the fence.

ITA I would be taken aback if a neighbor asked me to pay for the fence they want Chat Icon and my answer would be no way

We didn't ask anyone to help when we put in our PVC fence last year. I honestly would have been surprised (and put off) if one of my neighbors had been doing it & came over to ask me for $ so I didn't even consider asking them.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

I feel like the fence benefits both people so it should be a shared expense. My fence is falling down and our neighbors on one side refuse to pay for half which I think is ridiculous. They get to reap the benefits from my investment, why, the fence was there well before we moved into the house and now it's OUR fence? Well we are doing the patio next month and that broken fence will stay up till it's can't be hung anymore b/c I refuse to pay alone. JMO

I would laugh in their face if they asked me to help pay for a fence they want.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

We did not ask our neighbor to chip in for our fence.

The fence that was up was our neighbors. It was an old wooden fence, and falling down. He has a pool, so he's obligated to have a fence.

But we did not ask him to chip in. We were putting it up regardless if he contributed.

Our neighbors are also older and retired, and I equated it to a neighbor asking my parents to chip in for their new fence. My parents are on a fixed-income, and major home improvements aren't their priorty right now. I wouldn't want to make someone else feel obligated or uncomfortable about it.

They refuse to pay because its YOUR fence. I wouldnt pay either. I think its nuts to think they would pay. And you are cutting your nose to spite your face about the fence and the patio. Im sure they could careless if you have a nice new patio with a crappy fence. JMHO.

I wouldn't ask. In my opinion, it should be your own property and responsibilty, not shared.

Even if my neighbor had a fence already I would put my own up alongside theirs. I wouldnt want to worry about accidentally damaging their property (with DH throwing baseballs in the yard Chat Icon Chat Icon and family visiting with kids and dogs etc)

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

we were going to put up a PVC fence 2 yrs ago, we wound up using the $$ for other home projects, so it's still on our list.

when we were discussing putting it up, I let our neighbors know (since the only fence right now is their chain link fence), and since they have a dog that goes out all the time, I had to let them know so they could keep him in the day the fence came down.....they told me to let them know the cost and I said we wouldn't take any $$ from them (they are sweet old people- both of them are deaf actually, so I was communicating with their daughter about all this). I guess it would just be good karma for us to not accept anything from them. the fact that I finally have neighbors I actually like is enough "payment" for me! Chat Icon

eta: just wanted to add, our neighbor on the other side put up PVC a few years ago too, we offered him $$ and he wouldn't hear of it....so I guess in a sense we're paying it forward to the neighbors on the other side when we do that side w/ PVC.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

I should of made this post alittle clear I wasn't ask everyone to chip in and buy my fence. I have one neighbor on our side that has a chain link fence and not sure if it is there or ours so I wanted to take that down and replace it. I know when my parents got a new fence they went half with the neighbor on that side to benefit both houses.

But I think now I will just keep my mouth shut and put up the fence. I would like to ask them who fence the chain link is

in that case, check out where the posts are, if they're on the inside of your yard, it's definitely your fence...if they're on the inside of your neighbors yard, then it's probably theirs (at least that's how I think it works?) In any case, I would think if you're putting up something new your neighbor most likely would have no objection to taking it down (at least that's how my neighbor felt!).

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

my mom split one side of our fence with our neighbors. they had done it together about 10 years ago also and the fence was rotting. the people behind both of them had already put in their own, so my mom and neighbor only had to pay for 1 side anyway, so they split it. i thought it was a nice thing/the right thing to do.

I can't see how anyone can say it's MY fence, it borders both properties, if we have an acre of land then yeah it's my fence, but on the south shore of Nassau county where you have maybe 60 X 100, it's a shared fence IMO. If the fence we have now was in good condition and I wanted a new one I could see someone saying no, but the fence is clearly falling down and rotting, so why is it only my responsibility to replace it, it's a shared fence?????
Unfortunatly we can't afford to do a new fence and patio so the patio won. It's obviously a subject that comes down to personal opinion, but thats mine LOL
