Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?

I should of made this post alittle clear I wasn't ask everyone to chip in and buy my fence. I have one neighbor on our side that has a chain link fence and not sure if it is there or ours so I wanted to take that down and replace it. I know when my parents got a new fence they went half with the neighbor on that side to benefit both houses.
But I think now I will just keep my mouth shut and put up the fence. I would like to ask them who fence the chain link is
D, we had the same situation, and we put the new fence in front of (facing our yard) the chain link. They are touching each other, and saved us $$$ b/c the removal of the chain link was quite a bit as well. This way, if it's theirs, they can go ahead and take it down.

We didn't, but all the houses around us had their own fences and when we were replacing ours, so ours is right next to the neighbors.
We did have one neighbor try to talk the installers into taking down his crummy fence on that side and putting ours on his property line. He said he was trying to help us make the yard bigger for our kids. Gee thanks, that extra few inches really helps a lot.

I feel like the fence benefits both people so it should be a shared expense. My fence is falling down and our neighbors on one side refuse to pay for half which I think is ridiculous. They get to reap the benefits from my investment, why, the fence was there well before we moved into the house and now it's OUR fence? Well we are doing the patio next month and that broken fence will stay up till it's can't be hung anymore b/c I refuse to pay alone. JMO
They refuse to pay because its YOUR fence. I wouldnt pay either. I think its nuts to think they would pay. And you are cutting your nose to spite your face about the fence and the patio. Im sure they could careless if you have a nice new patio with a crappy fence. JMHO.
I can't see how anyone can say it's MY fence, it borders both properties, if we have an acre of land then yeah it's my fence, but on the south shore of Nassau county where you have maybe 60 X 100, it's a shared fence IMO. If the fence we have now was in good condition and I wanted a new one I could see someone saying no, but the fence is clearly falling down and rotting, so why is it only my responsibility to replace it, it's a shared fence????? Unfortunatly we can't afford to do a new fence and patio so the patio won. It's obviously a subject that comes down to personal opinion, but thats mine LOL
In my town fencing has to be offset 1' into your property so it really is "MY" fence, I pay taxes on the improvements, I am responsible for repairs. I have never heard of sharing a fence expense with a neighbor before this thread.

in that case, check out where the posts are, if they're on the inside of your yard, it's definitely your fence...if they're on the inside of your neighbors yard, then it's probably theirs (at least that's how I think it works?) In any case, I would think if you're putting up something new your neighbor most likely would have no objection to taking it down (at least that's how my neighbor felt!).
This is what I am hoping for

Our neighbor did PVC on the front of his house. One day he was outside talking to my DH and he mentioned that he wanted to do the rest of it eventually. We told him that when we have the money we would split that side of the fence with him.

Our neighbor came up to us and said he would chip in, thanked us for doing ALL the work ourselves. Then he started avoiding us. Never saying hello, running to his house from his car. It was obvious he didn't want to chip in and we didn't really care.

Well I know for a fact that by us putting up a fence this year, it does NOT benefit my neighbor. THEY are the reason we are putting up the fence. And by us doing so INCONVIENCES my neighbor greatly.
With that said, I see no need to even tell them we are putting up a fence and will most definately NOT be asking them for any money towards it.

I disagree-I've never heard of sharing the cost of the fence. If you want a new fence, you pay (IMO). IF they wanted a new fence, then they pay.
What if your property is next to 3 other neighbors and they all like different fence styles. Who would pay then and why would they coordinate the fence on their property with the tastes of neighbors who don't even live next store to them? Gets convoluted and a little nutty. You want a fence, you pay and put up your own.

I would laugh in their face if they asked me to help pay for a fence they want.
ITA I think its ridiculous to ask a neighbor to chip in for something so costly

No. I would never ask the neighbors for money and I would be taken aback if they asked us.
We put up a fence on 3 sides of our property. Our neighbor on one side had a fence already... His side got damaged in the pseudo-hurricane we had recently. We offered to split the cost of the damage even though it was 'his' fence. He declined.

Look at the blueprint of your house. Sometimes you'd be able to tell from that without having the need to ask them.

Our neighbors and I decided that when the time comes, we are both going to get a new fence and split the cost of the fence that borders both our properties.
They moved in 3 years ago, we moved in a year ago and money is tight between both of us. It was a great way for us both to get what we wanted and save money.

Yes, and if you BOTH want the fence then you BOTH pay. This is very common in my neighborhood. All of my neighbors on 3 sides share the same crappy fence. Myself and one other neighbor hated the fence so we split the cost. The other neighbor didnt mind the fence and I paid the whole thing. The other neighbor disliked the fence and offered to pay for that side but I declined because their financial situation is not great and I absorbed all the costs.
I am not sure why people are getting so heated about this lol I dont understand because its very common here on long island. I guess its more common in some areas as opposed to others.

My fence, my cost. I would NEVER dare ask a neighbor to contribute.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?
The family that moved next door to my parents brought over a est. for a wood fence replaced of $5,000. The one that was up was fine until he started back into it and hitting it with the ladders and such. He asked my Mom to pay half. I think it was crazy because the est. was for his entire fence but wants her to pay half. Yeah right. I told her that she should just get someone to come out and put up a fence right next to his. It would not cost as much.

I grew up on LI and bought a house here, and this whole fence issue is the craziest thing I've ever heard. This is also the first time I've ever heard of it.
If it's your fence, then it's your responsibility for the care and maintenance of it. If you want to put one up or replace one, it's your choice and your financial burden. I really don't understand why some people expect their neighbor to share in the expense of it.
Where on LI is this a common practice?

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?
We will ask one neighbor about chipping in when we want to replace our fence. This neighbor has an IG pool two feet from the fence that I own. If we took down the fence (which we want to since it is chain link and DC can climb right over it), he is legally obligated to put one up so really he is benefitting more from us sharing that cost with him.
I would never ask a neighbor in any other situation, except maybe if their pets/kids are destroying it.

We asked, but she didn't. We expected her to replace it b/c the nice side was facing us so we assumed it was hers but she told us that the former owner of our house was the one who put it up and that's just the way he put it up so we put in a new with the nice side facing us again I guess if you can't beat em join em

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?
I would never ask a neighbor to chip in if they did not have a fence already and or ever expressed wanting one. That's just us though. I do know plenty of people asking neighbors. You split the cost of the side linking up. We had a neighbor ask, we said no because his fence would be on our property once linked up and for resale on both sides it would of caused an issue. He went ahead and did it, we had an issue, he sold and then had an issue with the current neighbor because they were lied to about the fence (told it was on their line, which it was not). It's all straightened out now but it's not my cup of tea to deal with. I feel, if you know your neighbors well enough to have the conversation, sure why not. Otherwise I wouldn't.

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?
During that crazy storm we had weeks ago two of our wooden fence sections flew away. We decide to replace that entire fence w/ PVC. We asked our neighbor to split and they did 50/50 for the part we shared. What's the worst that can happen, they say "no". We would have replace the fence even if we didn't split the cost.

at my parents house we used to replace the fence every 7-10 years (wood stockade) and we never asked about neighbors chipping in.... never crossed our minds.
although, we did actually fence in our neighbors yard too, while we were working on ours, at no charge to them.

Our neightbors asked us to split it with them ($500 each). We were pretty annoyed about the whole thing but we didnt want to start a war so we told them we could only give them $200 but I am not happy about it

Re: If you had a new fence put in did you ask your neighbors to chip in?
My neighbor behind me asked if we would be interested in going half on the section between us.
We said yes, then got a quote for the entire fence.
Once he saw that we were doing the entire fence, he told us he hit money problems and wouldn't be able to go 1/2 on that section. I guess he decided he would get it for free.
Now my chain link fence is entirely down and I have an 80 lb dog and he decided he is not going to put up a fence between us. He has a fence on 3/4 sides of his property.
needless to say, my dog roamed both yards for a while.
I'm getting annoyed again thinking about this again.
I mentioned to the other neighbors, but didnt come out and ask. I said, "I'm going to put up a PVC fence, I wanted to let you know. Make sure you are okay with it, there may be workers on your property." I could tell by their response they were afraid I was going to ask for money. But I never did. One neighbor (older)said,"thats your fence, thats your fence!" I said "I know, I'm just tell you."
