Re: If you moved far away from your family...

How far away do you live? @ 700 miles

How often do you see them? about 2x a year. I saw my family a lot less when I lived on LI. They hated the island and I worked too much.

If you moved, why? Because I didn't want to live the rest of my life on LI. We enjoy the atmosphere here in Charleston.

Do you regret it? Only wish DH's family and my friends from LI were closer. The drive to NY is draining and Charleston's airport doesn't have convenient flights.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

How far away do you live? I live in Maryland, near Annapolis. About a 5 hour drive, 0r 1 hour flight.

How often do you see them? Since I had DD#2, a lot more, but usually 1-2x a month.

If you moved, why? Work. I used to work for Southwest Airlines and got based in Baltimore. Rather than deal with the commute, I just moved.

Do you regret it? Nope. I am so glad I did it. At the time, it was supposed to be temporary, because I loved LI. BUT, here it is 9 years later and I am SO glad I left. I still love LI, but I love my life here in Maryland more.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

We live in MD-- 250 mi away from ILS, 500 mi away from my parents

Why? Grad school. So we are planning on moving to NY after I graduate (DH has already finished)

How often do I visit? About 1-2X a year for my parents. BUT we meet them halfway in NY sometimes as well. And my parents came to MD last month for DH's graduation.

For ILS, we go about once a month Chat Icon It's HARD but they are a family that likes parties and celebration and we don't want to miss anything. April and May alone we will visit 4x because of parties and showers.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

We live in NJ- about 60 miles away from my parents so it's not far but more annoying (and expensive) to travel with the bridges and traffic.

Why? DH had a townhouse so I moved in with him. Cheaper than LI and quicker commute to NYC.

How often do I visit? We see my parents often - about 2-3 times per month, sometimes more. We don't go to LI that often - they come to us because it's easier with DD.

Do I miss LI? Yes, I do. I miss being close to my family and I like being close to the beaches in LI. But NJ isn't too far at all and I'm close to the city so I was able to keep my same job.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

I am also a NJ transplant and see my family a lot and I spend weekends either on LI or at our house in PA.

I will say, though, that it is very hard during the day to day. Like, the times you'd want to run over to your family's house or want to go shopping but have no one to go with. I'm also nervous for the future when you have older parents.

You don't realize that stuff until you actually move.

I would do it again because I'm with my DH, but in an ideal world, they would move here or I would move back.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

How far away do you live? ~500 miles. My family lives in Buffalo. I live on LI.

How often do you see them? 1x every 3-4 months.

If you moved, why? To be with DH who already had a stable job on LI when I moved down.

Do you regret it? There are days I do, but overall, I overall, I'm happy I made the decision to move. I miss being able to see my family every weekend, but we make concessions and DH supports us visiting as often as we can.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

How far away do you live? 3,000 miles approx. Moved from Dublin to LI

How often do you see them? My parents come here every year and stay in FL for a month. I go to Ireland twice a year.

If you moved, why? I was ready, personally and professionally. I have been a US citizen from birth (thanks to my folks living here in the 50s/60's) so I always had the option to come here. It took me long enough to decide as I didn't move until I was 31!

Do you regret it? I never regret it, but sometimes I still get homestick. I was very fortunate to have my sister living here already and that made it much easier. I was single when I came here am now married to my LI-native DH, so it was worth it Chat Icon. I would have missed out on seeing my nieces grow up and they mean the world to me. I do regret that my parents didn't move here too. They were supposed to, but keep changing their minds. They are now approaching their 80's and my greatest fear is that something will happen them and we are so far awayChat Icon

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

I moved about 45 miles from my family (eastern Long Island). I very rarely see them at my house, usually only if I drive to Nassau to see them. According to them I live so far.

I was unaware that you needed a special VISA and Passport to come to Suffolk County. Chat Icon It's a little irritating.

If DH would make the same money at a police department in South Florida that he does here, I would have been gone already.

Good luck with your decision!

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

I moved across the country. Parents and all family is on LI, and I'm here in Vegas.

I see them 3/4 times a year, sometimes more.

I did it for a job, and so I could have a better quality of life.

I don't regret it, but it is very hard sometimes. I don't have kids, but I imagine when I do, it will be even harder.

Its definitely not for everyone.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

How far away do you live? We live 1100 miles away in Sunny Central FL.

How often do you see them? About 2x - 3x a year give or take

If you moved, why? Because LI was too expensive for us to even try to live on our own back in 2005. I also got a job that paid alittle more than my LI job did so it was excellent

Do you regret it? Right now I do because I was laid off and can not find any work in Central FL and unemployment sucks it is half what NY offers. If I lived on LI I would not have an issue finding work because of more variety.

We didn't move, my ILs did. DH's parents moved to Phoenix. Twice. (Long story). It's about 3000 miles. They moved b/c they couldn't afford to live on LI and MIL loved her job there. DH hasn't seen his father since August, his mom since October. I don't know if they regret it, but I feel like they might once we have children. (My parents areon LI). DH really misses his parents. I hate the fact that we have to lay out hundreds of dollars each time we want to see them. And I worry that once they start to age, they're out there all alone.

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

I'll answer - even though we moved back...

We were ~3000 miles away in San Diego

We saw my family 1-2 a year - but like PP said - all your vacation goes to visiting home. my mom doesn't fly. Dh's family is in AZ (4-5 hours away), so we saw them once every month or so. Now that we are back in NY, all of our vacations go to going back to CA...LOL

We moved, b/c we loved it there, DH was laid off, I hated my job, so why not! We lived off DH's severance and my summer check until he found a job.

regret is not the right word. Obviously to some extent, since we moved back, but that was b/c I was pregnant. I wish that we still lived there now, but I am really thankful that my kids have a relationship with their grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins. We plan on going back when we retire.

Can't really answer your questions too well as this is only day 11 of our cross country move but so far no regrets but of course we are still in our "honeymoon" phase! We live 1600 miles away and obviously can't tell you about how often we see family just yet. Our #1 reason for moving was cost of living. We realized it would have been a constant struggle to live on long island. The very little support we get from our family was not enough incentive to keep us there so we saved and then packed up and left. Yes my daughter will not have that strong bond with her grandmas that I hoped for(although MIL already talks of moving down here soon)but she now has a whole world of opportunity open to her that we could not have provided on Long Island. Of course there will be ups and down but I am eagerly looking forward to our adventures together in our new world here!

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

My parents are in CO. I moved to CA and now I am on Long Island.

I see them once or twice a year - almost every Christmas, sometimes at another holiday or two.

I moved because I was unhappy, and the final straw was almost getting into a car accident sure to an icy hill.

I didn't rgret one single minute!! I wanted to go somewhere warm and mild, with Chat Icon I made great friends, and a good job and a lot of hobbies. I WAS happy, my parents understood that it was what I needed to do for ME.

Now, I would rather be closer to them. I'd take CO over NY in a heartbeat. NY represents so much bad stuff (I grew up in the Hudson Valley) and I hate the weather, that I'd rather have CO's ice than NY's ice and snow (if I can't have FL or CA's sunshine).

I do miss them but we talk on the phone a lot and do visit when we can!

And if we have a few Chat Icon Chat Icon then I know I'll be extra sad that my hubby's parents will be here but mine won't. (They say they're never moving away from CO!)

But for now, I'm trying to make it work. The bottom line is that you have to live where YOU will be happy. Life is too short to permanently sacrifice your happiness. It sounds like your DH and you will be happier living down there and you will have some family nearby. Goof luck on your decision!!

Re: If you moved far away from your family...

It's not that far, but I live in CT, about 2.5 hours from my family. I used to see my family at least once per month, but my family has been coming up most weekends since DS was born. I'm sure I'll see them a lot more often than I used to. I moved to CT after graduating college. I met DH and decided to stay in CT. I don't regret it at all. Although I'd love to be a little closer to family, especially now that I have a child, I'm really happy here.
