We moved to VA almost 2 years ago for family and $ reasons. We do not like it here and will probably be moving back to LI in 3 years. The one great thing about being here are the moment is that I can go back to school FT & my DH can cover all the house bills etc.

Re: If you moved off LI out of state, what was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

I didn't move out of state, but I did move upstate!

For us, it was DH's commute. It often was 2 hours each way... That was 4 hours / day! Also, at the time (the height of the market), we didn't see a way we would be able to afford to buy a home. Neither one of us is handy at ALL, and we don't have any family that is either. So we would be stuck paying someone to do everything.

We were able to buy a new construction house w/ 4 bedrooms 2.5 baths for what a one bedroom coop was going for at the time. It was really tough initially. I miss being able to call friends / family to just stop by their house or to run to the mall with. I don't have anyone here to do that with. Now that we have been here for 2 years, it is getting a little better. I think I would still move back if we could afford to live comfortably on LI. DH, on the other hand, will never go back. He even hates going to visit.

We both took pay cuts to come here... but the cost of living has made up for it.

It is a really tough decision.

We moved to Putnam County in '05 because the LI housing market was too much for us- we got a little more for our money here.

However, we want to move back. It's hard with no family nearby, and I got a good raise, which helps. But no one wants to buy our house. We are willing to sell it at a small loss, but still no takers.

I'd tell anyone who wants to leave, if they want kids, to think very hard and maybe rent somewhere first before committing. That's what I wish we'd done. I knew things would be different, but I truly did not know how much more I'd miss my friends and family on LI, and I am pretty indpendent.

Ditto. I'd move out of this area in a heartbeat.

DH is resistant.

we moved to be closer to my stepson - prices are going up around here too (FL) now that we have a child together and all our family is in ny - making it here on our salaries, plus daycare plus child support = no $$$ left over...so we're coming home where the money is better and the bills will be fewer (living in family owned apt)

The ridiculous taxes broke our back! We didn't "have" to leave as we had good jobs and we owned a home but the timing was just right for us. We sold our home and built a brand new one in TX. I would use to say I would NEVERRRR leave NY and TX is NOT NY by any stretch of the word but when we go back to visit, it's just not the same anymore. We wouldn't go back to NY unless we won the lottery....and even then we'd think about it. Janice said it best, the quality of life we have now is unmatched. We love it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i can stay at home now and we dont even ave children yet he makes about $80000 a year and our house was $115,000 with taxes around $950 a month so you do the math..i would love to live on LI..there is just nowhere else like it in the world..but id rather have my everyday life and the COL be more affordable

We are moving to Matthews NC at the end of the month. The COL on LI is CRAZY. I get more bang for my buck in NC. Taxes are cheaper, houses are cheaper its a win/win. DH is able to stay with his company here in NY and work from home in NC, so gas is not in issue. Just overall it is better...also my biggest win is NO SNOW, and IF it may snow, its like a 1/2 inch and its gone. Chat Icon

I'm moving..(As soon as I find a darn job) to FL...I'm just tired of cash being tight. I want to live more comfortably and my parents are down in FL so I want to be closer to them.
I know it'll be the best decision I ever made!

Re: If you moved off LI out of state, what was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

I want to go yesterday. But my job is for the state and I have 8 yrs to go, and my dh works for the city and cant' leave before he's 55 so we are stuck here for at least 12yrs.

And the one thing that makes me want to cry every time I think of it, his daughter and ex are already in Fl and he is not close with his sister or parents (we don't do holidays with them) and my whole family is moving to PA next year so we'll be all alone. Chat Icon

Although I'm always saying I want to move, I don't know if I would/could actually go through with it.
DH refuses to leave anyway, so it isn't even a discussion.

I just want a different life style. I would love a more rural area.

My daughter went to school in AK and decided to stay. Don't know how she did/does it. I miss her a lot...but I could never move there! too cold

Re: If you moved off LI out of state, what was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

we live in ct

less traffic

more country feel but only 45 mins from nyc via metro north rr

i dont feel that i need to live up to LI standards, constand one upping ,etc. it does not exist here in my town anywhere close to how it exists where i grew up

less housing taxes

my area is a top pplace for energy trading, hedge funds and shipping...so great job opportunity

Re: If you moved off LI out of state, what was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

We moved for DH's promotion. It was his dream job, he had been commuting to Jersey City from Massapequa & was miserable. It was almost a no brainer. We knew we wanted to start a family very soon (it turns out I became pregnant 2 months before we moved.) It's not always easy. We both miss our family & friends a great deal. And I really wanted to go warmer, instead we went colder (Chicago.) But our life is so much better in so many ways now. We still talk about if we would go back and if he could still make his salary there, we probably would, but it's hard to get another position there like he has here. We are always amazed at how NICE people are out here. So not only are we so much better off financially, we are surrounded by nice people and we really like just about everything out here (except the winter.)

Re: If you moved off LI out of state, what was the "straw that broke the camels back"?

We just moved to Charleston, SC. I don't know if it was that the camel's back was broken we were just honest with ourselves that we did not want to pay exorbitant taxes, crazy prices for houses that weren't worth it(to us) and also be closer to my sister and my Mom. We recently sold a house in Islandia. we had the STAR but the taxes were 9K without. For CI schools!

The schools here are mostly rated good or excellent in the areas we will probably buy. The weather is awesome. We can walk all around the city. There are tons of parks. It is very dog friendly. We can buy a new construction between 2-300K or an older home in the 2's. Taxes are 1500-2k a year. It is a great lifestyle. we are happy about the move. Hopefully my closest friend will be moving here by next year and that will make it perfectChat Icon
