If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
We have had a treadmill for years and I used to really enjoy it when I was running on it exclusively. Now I have been exclusively running outside for a couple of years. I just got on the treadmill today and I didn't like it at all. Is it just going to be an adjustment since I am not used to it or will I always hate it? Running 4 miles felt like a marathon.

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
could have written that word for word myself!! until this weekend i was continuing to run outdoors....but the roads here are so icy i just can't so it was the DREADmill for me this AM and a few nights this week. i hate it too-so much! it find it so boring and hate breathing in stale air ect... for me the ONLY thing that keeps me entertained is the TV-it's close to the treadmill and i have earphones plugged in. so i watch some HGTV and other shows i like. you can find some good treadmill workouts online and sometimes doing intervals helps from geting too boring. i find that i can also only do 3-4 miles on it before i go nuts. so for now i just tell myself its temporary and that spring is coming and i'll be out there again....i can't wait!

Yup, I had the TV on just like you do. My DD was napping so that's what really kept me inside but the ice is definitely a factor as well. I hope to get out on Monday and run the roads.

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I feel your pain. I wrote this exact post 6 weeks ago:
With it getting dark so early, I can not run outside anymore after work so I am stuck on the treadmill. Does anyone else feel like it kills your body? I am doing the same mileage, but for some reason I am always sore - like my muscles and bones hate me. I usually dislike the treadmill, but this year the transition has been worse than usual. I hate it and I am only two weeks in. I can not wait until March when I can be done with this thing! An hour run on the treadmill feels like a 90+ minute run outdoors.
7 weeks later and the treadmill is bearable, but not ideal. I would say it took about 3-4 weeks to get used to running on it again. Hopefully, in 6 weeks, I will be back outdoors.

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I find the only way I can tolerate the treadmill is to do some intervals/speedwork. I play around but I usually do 800 or mile repeats and that usually gets me through 4-5 miles. I could never do a long run on a treadmill though.
My best friend trained for a marathon exclusively on a treadmill - she did a 20 miler on one.

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I had to force myself to get used to it last year since I had limited time to run outside. I did a good deal of training for my half last spring on it. As a previous poster said, so much more bearable if you do intervals. I actually like it for speed training, you can see exactly how fast, how far, incline, etc. And on days when there's ice on the roads, it's better than nothing!!

I also hate the treadmill. I can't bear the thought of running in a stinky gym. A lot of my love for running is the freedom and closeness to nature. I'm going to try to keep up my outdoor runs, but my face was frozen today. I couldn't move my jaw for a few minutes when I came home. Looking forward to slightly warmer temps!

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I have no problem with running in the cold. This was actually the first day on the treadmill in years. Just today my DD was napping and my DH was out & I figured it was so icy so may as well hop on the treadmill. Not fun!

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I used to hate it, but it's really my only option having 3 babies at home. I can't leave them home alone so i can go out for a run, but i can have my son in his playroom and the babies in their swings just outside the door and run on my treadmill. Now i am so used to it that i have trouble running outside. To me the treadmill is much much easier. Even using the incline does not compare to real hills. And don't get me started on wind! So i guess my point is its better than not running but for me it doesn't translate to outside.

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
i cant run outside in the cold so i havent ran outside since November. My body feels it more when i run outside & it makes the time pass faster, but the treadmill is very convenient with 3 kids & i get good use out of it.

So far this winter I have only gotten on the treadmill 3x. I will pretty much do anything to avoid it!

Re: If you run outside and on the treadmill come in....question
I need music and tv on and real loud and I speed up the treadmill to force me to run quicker. I dread it but am so glad when it's over. I agree running outside is much better

I much rather run outside however the treadmill is just easier for me because I just have know interest in running with the jogging stroller anymore. So I learned to like it I guess. TV or the radio helps

I can't wait for the warmer weather to get back to running outside. I'm so sick of the treadmill.

this is me completely. I hate it so much. I will suffer for 2-3 miles on a treadmill but I end up walking a lot just to get through the miles.
I find doing speed work in .25 mile increments tolerable.
I ran 5 miles outside Saturday and it felt amazing to get off the stupid machine. I wore so many layers i could barely move.
