If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
Or any other kind of testing? I don't know much about them other than I think they're recommended for 35+ pg women. Since it looks like I will be at least 35 when I'm pg again, I just want to know from you moms (if you don't mind sharing) if you had either of these tests and also what your reasons were (again if you don't mind sharing) to either have or not have them. Thanks so much!

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I'm 35 now and with this pregnancy, after the initial genetic testing at 12 weeks or so I decided not to have the amnio, since that first test went well.
I'm not sure what the CVS test is.. but if it's not standard then I probably didn't have it.

Same - I was 35 when I got pregnant and had thought I might have to havet the amnio or CVS. I had asked my dr about it b/c I was nervous being so "old" but he said we'd do the first tests (I think the first trimester screening and the nuchal translucency screening test) and see how that looked, and if they looked good, he probably wouldn't recommend the CVS or amnio unless I really wanted it. Everything looked good so I skipped it.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
Both of my 's were born when I was over age 35- had one at 35, the second at 37.
I did not have an amnio with either pregnancy. I did have the nuchal translucency done at 12 weeks with each one and got excellent numbers.
If I didn't- I would probably have opted for an amnio.
A friend of mine did the CVS test in her first trimester and it gave her peace of mind- get the results earlier and faster than an amnio. Though I believe it is a riskier test- the doc can give you more info.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I was 36 when I had DD#1. My 12-week screening went low...all test results were the same as that of a woman in her 20s (risk of Downs, etc) so I opted not to have the other tests. I had a miscarriage between DD#1 and DD#2 and that baby had trisomy-18 so when I got PG with DD#2 my risk for trisomy-18 came back elevated so I had the amnio. I was 39. If I get PG again, I will probably have the CVS just because it can be done so much sooner and put my mind at ease that much earlier.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I gave birth to my son about 6 weeks after turning 35 and did NOT have any testing other than AFP and NT because I was not 35 when the baby was conceived.
I did, however, have Amnio about 2 months ago; as I am now 36 and DC will be born 2 months before I turn 37

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I was 38 when I had my and 39 when was born. I had nuchal translucency done with both (both had good results). I also had an amnio with both pregnancies.
I had two great pregnancies and two very healthy babies

A 38 year old friend of mine is preg with twins.
Her OB said NT and AFP went well so no need to do amnio.

No but I did the blood test and sono, they both came back highly low risk.

I am 37, and from Day 1 my OB said that unless the Week 12 screening came back questionable, he did not recommend the amino "just because" I was over 35.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I am 35 and pg with #2 now.
I did not do the amnio or the CVS.
I had the 12 week NT scan and sequential screening. My numbers were all good and showed very low risk so I saw no reason to get anything else done.
My OB said that the sequential screening was something like 95-98% effective in ruling out down's, so those numbers were good enough for me.
Also since this is my last PG, I did not want to do anything that might increase my risk of miscarriage, even though it is only like 1% with amnio.
I think the risk of miscarriage is closer to 2-3% with the CVS.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I did the CVS test on my OB's recommendation. IIRC I was somewhere between 10-11 weeks pg. The cvs can only be done in the 1st trimester, the lab I used only does it between 10 and 12 weeks to minimize the risk factor. It was a pretty easy test, it's quite similar to the amnio, but they are drawing placental cells instead of amniotic fluid, and as stated it's done much earlier than an amnio. I was glad we did it; I got the results the VERY NEXT DAY which was AWESOME. No chromosomal issues, and we found out the sex that day too, which for us was cool we were eager to know!! I found that it helped me enjoy the rest of my pg, knowing my little "XY" was healthy

Same here. My Dr. was pushing for it but decided the risks weren't worth it if everything came back fine.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I was 37 when I got pregnant with DD.
My OB never pushed it. The only reason I had an Amnio when pregnant with DD was because my AFP/Quad Triple Screen results were questionable and my Level II showed soft markers for Downs.
I did not do an amnio with this pregnancy. But since we did a FET to get pregnant with this baby, we did genetic testing on the embryo prior to my transfer. If we had not, I probably would have had an amnio.

I am 35 and just had my DD. They recommended an amnio, but my ultrascreen camed back great so I chose not too. No matter how small the risk of mc it was too high for me after having 2 previous losses.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I didn't have an amnio with my first and I was 38. My numbers all came back really good.
I did have an amnio with my second and I was 40. My numbers came back good again but I wanted to be on the safe side and know as much as I could beforehand. My OB didn't push for one bc I was "advanced maternal age"
She let me make the decision and just talked to me about pros and cons etc.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
I was 35 when I was pregnant with DD. I did have the 12 week screening and the nuchal screening. When I had the 2 blood test done, they were sent to 2 different labs, so it was inconclusive. My ob/gyn suggested having an amnio and explained the risks to me. I opted to not have the amnio, so instead I was sent for a fetal echo cardiogram.

I am 35 with this pg. I will only have the amnio if my NT or AFP tests come back questionable.

Re: If you were 35 and older when pg- did you have an amnio or cvs?
CVS with both. I was 36 with DD and 38 with DS. The only reason I picked it was the doctor who revolutionized the procedure and does over 5000 of them a year, was at a hospital in downtown LA so it was an easy trip.
I am not sure if I would have done CVS unless it was with a doctor with a TON of experience since the risks are slightly higher. That being said, I thought it was a very painless procedure with minimum downtime.
ETA: I did the procedure for both since I had a M/C that was chromosomal in nature and this put me at a higher risk for abnormalities.
