I have to admit that I went a little overboard with Lucas. But there was no stopping me...so in the end it was more for me than him. You're right in that a box is just as exciting to them at that age so it's completely what you are comfortable with. As far as my own personal opinion...I do think that it's nice to have something...anything...for them to sit in front of all wrapped and ready to be torn. Makes for a cute picture and just adds to the festivities.

Re: If your child was 8 months or younger when Christmas rolled around....

My son was 7 months and was infatuated with the presents. He sat in his chair and opened (I had to help with this..I thought he would like ripping the paper off but he didnt). He truly got excited when he saw all his toys...the pics I have are priceless. I didn't think we would get this reaction, but I was soooo happy that we did.

This baby is due in November, so I don't think I am going to get quite the same reactionChat Icon

DS was only a month old at Christmas. I got him his first ornament, some clothes and not much else. The family bought a ton.

I am not sure I will buy much for him this year either. His birthday is only a month before and between that and Christmas, i have a feeling we will get a ton of stuff. He won't know the difference, nor will he know what is from us and what is from everyone else.

I went overboard as well. What did me in was all the sales I found-- toys for 50-60% off Chat Icon

I say I'm going to be better this year-- we'll see Chat Icon

for their 1st christmas, we only got them 1 small toy each. They were only 3 months, they had no idea.

This year though we plan on going crazy since they are starting to understand Chat Icon

Re: If your child was 8 months or younger when Christmas rolled around....

We bought some stuff. Mostly videos and leap-frog type things, and a couple of stuffed toys. G was just sitting up around Christmas so we did get a toy train that ran around the floor that was age appropriate. It has a ball feed & was supposed to encourage crawling.

Re: If your child was 8 months or younger when Christmas rolled around....

DS turned 6 mos right before Christmas and we really didn't go overboard. We got him a couple of things he could sit in front of and play with (Fisher Price Soundstage) and a little train set. We also got him a couple of things for when he was a bit older (board books, wooden puzzles, ride-on truck). We ended up getting him more toys for his birthday when he was cruising/crawling/nearly walking.

Matty was 6 months old for his 1st christmas. We got him some clothes and 2 toys. He got so much stuff from family and friends. Honestly he's gotten such nice gifts from everyone that sometimes it feels like we haven't bought him a lot of toys. Out of all the toys and clothes he has I would say that 75% of it is all gifts that he's gotten. I have yet to buy this kid a coat or a jacket. He already has them cuz he's gotten them as gifts.

So yeah I agree. You don't have to go nuts. trust me between friends and family your little ones will get a lot...Chat Icon

Re: If your child was 8 months or younger when Christmas rolled around....

what a great question!

DC will be just over 3 months old, (he is not here yet) and I was thinking it's not worth it to go all out since family will buy, and he won't know what's going on.
I'll probably do one nice outfit ,and a toy, that's about it.

We didn't get them much, everyone else did. We got them a few token gifts though. Mine were 4 months old so they were clueless at this point.

Molly was exactly 1 month old. Santa got her 2 cute newborn toys and an item or two in her stocking. It was all about getting her dressed upChat Icon

We got them some necessities and only a few toys. They got a bunch of toys and gifts from friends and relatives - they were 8 weeks old, I didn't see the point in going overboard.

Rylan will be 8 months in Dec. For the most part we're telling everyone no toys!! I know that sounds horrible but we have a 1 bedroom apartment right and there is no need to pile in toys that won't be played with.
