My coworker was discussing teacher gifts with me yesterday. She said she contributed money for both her kids' teachers but then is going out and getting them all additional gifts. I asked her why if she contributed to the class gift and she said b/c otherwise the teachers will take it out on her kids. That in her district, you have to give beyond the class gift or else your child will get a reputation between the teachers. I told her that's ridiculous but does this really happen? I can't imagine that it's true and if it is, it's quite disgusting. She's in a good district but not an affluent one if that makes any sense.

That makes no sense! I can't imagine a teacher thinking like this, let alone a bunch of teachers in a school.

This is disgusting! Although, the class parents should be listing ALL of the kids on the card, regardless if they contributed or not. Some kids can't afford to contribute.

I don't think that teachers have so much time to discuss this. I give an extra gift and so do most of the classmates. The gift from the class is an amount set by the PTA and I don't feel that it reflects the teacher's performance. I contribute to it and then do my own gift. I don't do it because of gossip, though.
