Illegal apartment rentals.

I have at least 4 on my block alone. It's annoying for many reasons.

The village where I live basically said they know they are there. But don't do anything.

Has anyone confronted theirs town about this?

I'm tired of all the cars all over the place and the fact that all these tax dollars are lost while our district is struggling. The problem would be fixed if everyone were paying taxes on these rentals.

You can ask them not to park in front of your house but basically......... if you want to stay friendly on block, gotta turn your head.

Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

Where there's a will there's a way. My mom had/has this issue with neighbors on both sides. For one neighbor, she contacted Kate Murray's office and complained. Not once. Not twice. But MANY times. Finally, the town got involved, went to the neighbors house numerous times and long long story short, they were told that the tenant living in an illegal basement apartment not only had to move out, but the owner of the house had to seal up the back entrance into the basement.
As for the neighbor's on her other side, she's giving them a chance. If they don't park in front of her house or bother her then she won't bother them. However, she has no problem doing the same thing if they become a problem.

On one hand, my mom is an amazing advocate for herself and the town. If more people stood up for what they wanted and believed in, and were persistent enough we wouldn't have problems like that. On the other hand, she still has to live next to these people, and at the end of the day you really don't know who you're dealing with.

HTH

Btw, if you live in a Village I'm surprised they won't do anything. My mom doesn't live in a village.

Does your town have a Code Enforcement division? I know in Southampton Town out east this is who deals with rentals, noise complaints, etc. They work with the police department.

Illegal apartment rentals.

The village I live in doesn't allow overnight parking in the street, but they generally don't bother residents. I get being mad about tax dollars but you can't get too mad about parking in front of house, you don't own that space even if it's really annoying. My neighbor who rents ( as do many on the block) had to go to court after a tenant counter sued her. She had to pay something like a 10,000 fine and widen the apron of her driveway to give a second parking space. The taxes you pay additionally to live in the village should be working for you on this matter

Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

It's not an issue on my block.

I do know someone who called the town constantly about illegal rentals on hers.

She and her DH ended up selling and moving instead because it wasn't worth the aggravation when nothing was done about it.

Her situation was kind of extreme though.....I think there were like a crazy amount of people staying in a small cape coming and going at all hours.

I understand being frustrated.

But do you want to be the neighborhood pariah? You could really be messing with people's livelihoods - what if the apartment helps pay their mortgage? If town officials are aware, I'd leave it be.

I'm just not in the boat that would want to mess with people's homes just because I could.

Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

I agree with a previous poster. Unless you really understand all the behind the scenes information, you may want to stay out of it. (unless you suspect other illegal activities)

we have a basement apartment that was already here when we moved into the house. our original thought was to leave it alone so that we had a place for out of town family member to stay when they came to visit.

plans changed when my mother in law asked to move in for 6 months while she looked for something to buy. 6 months turned into 10 years, but overall we loved having her here. Now that she is gone, I am so happy that she did live here, because my kids spent so much time with her and those are memories they will always cherish.

she did have a car, but she always parked it in front of my house and when there was bad weather we pulled it into my driveway. So we tried to be respectful of our neighbors. As far as i know, none of my neighbors minded that she was here.

now that she is gone, the apartment will be a place for out of town guests to stay when they visit.

I agree with everyone, it's usually not worth the aggravation to fight them. That said, I would request anyone who parks on the street to make sure NOT to park in front of your house. That is a BIG pet peeve of mine.

Re: Illegal apartment rentals.

We were a family of 6, with 7 cars. Our driveway doesn't fit 7 cars. Neither does the front of our house. I think as long as your are courteous by not blocking someones driveway or parking in a manner which prevents other people from parking then there is no problem.

I think it depends on the reason they bother you, If it is an Apt with a tone of people living in it or you suspect illegal activity def call.

If its just the cars I probably wouldn't call.

Honestly the reason why a person has an illegal apt shouldn't play into the thought process of if you should call or not. If its a pulic nuisance should be the reason

Illegal apartment rentals.

We had big issues with our neighbor's tenants. BIG issues.

They constantly parked in front of our house so that there wouldn't be too many cars in front of their house that would possibly draw attention to the illegal apartment. They parked on both sides of our driveway, blocking it many times so that not only did we not have a space in front of our own house to park in, we couldn't even park in our driveway. We were basically forced into parking in front of there house, and almost every time we did we had problems. Our cars were keyed, eggs were thrown at them, nails were found in the tires, and hit on multiple occasions. They would pull up ON our front & back bumpers & block us in our spot. This all then happened no matter where we parked, even in front of our own house. We knew it was them but didn't have the proof. If we called the police to have it documented, even though we didn't mention our suspicions that it was them, it only made it worse. They tenants would state us down everytime we were outside or getting into/out of our car. They provoked our dog to get him to bark & go crazy. They were NUTS.

Luckily, they moved. But our only option with the village was to sign an affidavit that we were aware there is an apartment in the house & the village would investigate, but that would become public and they could easily look it up to see who signed it.

I'm sorry but after all of that, I could care less if the illegal apartment helped pay my neighbor's bills.

You still can't have the things in the illegal apartment like a kitchen, bathrooms, etc. that aren't up to code. Family member living there or not.

It annoys me more that people think laws don't apply to them, than people having apartments in their homes.

We're not talking about a LEGAL apartment - its ILLEGAL.

In this market worst case scenario the foreclosures would be picked up by the investors. It is not as bad as you think.

For the family whose home is foreclosed, it is.
