I'm at the end of my rope-MON PM UPDATE
If Sydnie doesn't start sleeping through the night soon I will NEVER convince DH to have another. She is an awesome baby and a good napper but nighttime is wearing on me.
We stopped her 3 am feeding only 2 weeks ago. It was usually the only time she woke up during the night. For about 10 days she did great! She only woke up a few nights right around 3, we gave her the nuk, and she went back to sleep. Virtually no crying involved.
Now? Forget it! The past few nights she is up 5-8 times!!!!!! I let her fuss but then I know she wants the nuk and struggles with it when she's on her belly so one of us will go in and then she gets more hysterical but we give her the nuk and she'll generally go back to sleep eventually. Last night she was up at least 3 times crying for at least 15 minutes. I even gave her Motrin around 11 pm which made no difference.
There are no teeth even beginning to surface, although she started tugging her ear yesterday. I also had that issue that time with CIO and she started vomiting and choking so I am afraid.
What do you think is going on and how do I handle it?
Sometimes I feel like going in there right away to nuk her is the best choice, other times I think letting her cry is the best choice but I think my inconsistency is making it worse. Oh how I wished people were on here at 3am for help.
Thanks if you got this far.
UPDATE NIGHT 1 (MON PM) She was tugging her ears and biting so at 7:15 she got a dose of Tylenol and her last 8 oz bottle w/cereal.
At 3:15 she woke up crying. I went in at 10-15 minute intervals for an hour and a half until I gave in at 4:40 and gave her a 7 oz bottle which she woofed down. After that I laid her down....awake but sleepy....and walked out, never having to return. She babbled herself to sleep and is JUST waking now.
Your thoughts? Am I a major failure? This is so hard, esp when I have to wake up for work.

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
I hope it gets better soon. DD started sleeping through at 8 1/2 months when she decided it was fine to sleep on her stomach. Before then we still did the 3am feeding. I couldn't do CIO and when I tried it didn't work for DD. I think they STTN when they are ready and that is a hard pill for us to swallow.

Thank you. This gives me so much hope.
That's how I felt about the 3 am feeding. I knew she was past the age but she still wanted/needed it.
I just think we gave up a mid-night feeding just in time to be up for teeth LOL

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
for a month maybe a lil more dd was waking up every hr on the hr.....whining fussing and sometimes crying....id go in there put the paci back in her mouth and she went back to sleep most of the times but there were times she was up for an hr straight and i would have to keep going in there putting hte paci in her mouth.....then on her 7th month bday she cut her first tooth and two days late r her second and the night wakings stopped....she sometimes whines for the binkie throughout the night but NOT every hr like she was doing....i think possibly ur dd is teething really bad....if ur trying to help with teething symptoms like the motrin etc then i think you have to wait it out til she gets a tooth to see if things change..i also think part of the reason why dd is still waking up sporatically is separation anxiety....its in full force during the day and i read that it leads to night wakings also... hoping things work out for u

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
DS uses a binky (or you call it a nuk) and it was very hard when he was younger and wasn't able to find it himself and put it back in on his own. I was getting up several times a night. And to be honest, he just turned 2 and still uses a binky and I still have to get up sometimes to find it for him and give it back to him.
You could let her CIO but you've figured out like I did with DS, that all she really wants is the binky so I would just get up and give it to her right away. She's not having a problem sleeping for any other reason, KWIM?

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
I know you had some problems with CIO out in the past. And because of it you are hesitant to try again. But last night you let her stir for 15 minutes and the vomiting/choking didn't happen, right? Maybe you can try CIO again?
I know for LB (headoverheels) Luca started STTN as soon as she removed the binky from the situation.
I always anticipated doing CIO with Ryan, for us it was just a matter of when would be the right time.
My sister said it best to me. Self soothing and sleeping is a skill they eventually need to learn for themselves. It's up to us to decide when
I realize this post probably wasn't helpful at all...but hang in there. I know you are doing the best you can!

i agree with jess - i really think it is time to try CIO again.
i got some great advice from a couple of mommies on here that taking the pacifier away cold turkey was the best thing they did for their babies. that is what i did with luca and it worked like a charm. the first night he was HYSTERICAL for about 1/2 hour and then fell asleep. it only got easier after that.
i have also read that if you are truly committed to doing CIO, you are supposed to let them cry and if the vomit, you just go in, clean it up, change them and put them back down. if she is doing it on purpose (i don't know if there is any way to figure this out) she will stop once she knows it won't get her anywhere.
i am so sorry you are dealing with this annie - i have been there but not since luca was 5 months old. i can't imagine how hard this must be.

How old is she? Is she getting enough to eat during the day. My DS used to wake once he started sleeping through the night when he was hungry.

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
i was going to email you this morning actually, because i remembered your dd started STTN, im so sorry youre up again...we are too i know youre a few months ahead of me and i cant imagine doing this that long, or how tired ill be by then.. LB, if youre still following this thread...did you take away his binky for all times of the day, or just bed time?? My dd likes to use it for naps and in the car as well.. My issue is similar..although my dd doesnt usually fall asleep with the binky, she falls asleep during her story in my arms within 5 minutes and i put her in...if she does have the binky, i take it out of her mouth before i leave the room.. i give it back to her in the middle of the nite when she whines, because i dont want to continue with this nite time feeding!! The dr keeps telling me she doesnt NEED it..
this is so frustrating...my ds never did this..to the original poster, i feel for you..im at my wits end..im going today to buy that healthy sleep habits book, but im POSITIVE its not gonna tell me anything i dont already do or have done..i have a ten year old, who displayed excellent sleep habits, i instilled them early..i really just think she isnt ready.. and i feel bad, because i know if theyre waking us up, we're keeping THEM up too with all these different things were doing.. ugh, i dunno either, but just wanted to tell you youre not alone!!

ITA with this. Nina was great as a newborn but as time went on she was a terrible night sleeper. Even with CIO she was still waking and crying at night.

i took it away completely. and to be honest i think that i was offering it to him when *I* thought he needed it. when he saw it, he wanted it, but he never cried for it.
he didn't miss it for one second after that first time doing CIO - not for naps, not in the car, not at all.

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
Thank you so so much everyone.
Jess-I think you're right. There hasn't been any more vomiting/choking and if I think it's getting to that I can get her. It is probably time for more CIO.
LB- Bravo woman! You have done such an amazing job. I think I need to look to you for more inspiration as Luca and Syd seemed to have had many parallels. I will suggest to DH tonight taking away the nuk cold turkey. I wanted it gone by 12 months anyway.
Thanks again everyone! I'm going to consult ped and DH with some of your insights and let you know how it goes.

Re: I'm at the end of my rope
as for the pacifiers - I think I have like 10 in the crib all around her so she can always find one
eta - I just started CIO like a week ago. Before that , if she would cry, I would go in and rub her belly till she stopped, then I would leave. But recently that is making it worse so now I just let her cry. She even has her fake cry like "hello, mommy, when are you going to come in here" but i dont go in

Re: I'm at the end of my rope-MON PM UPDATE
We are going through something similar with DD right now. Up for 2 hours at a clip. I know its her teeth, we've been to the dentist already.
I'm just riding it out and hoping it passes quickly.
Just read your update, you are NOT a major failure. DD may not be ready to give up the night feedings.

Re: I'm at the end of my rope-MON PM UPDATE
Unfortunately, I don't have any major advice.
All I can say is, the 10 minute intervals in this house would never fly. The only way Ryan would ever calm down is if I nursed him.
That being said, when we decided it was time for CIO we did it cold turkey.
We did our normal bedtime routine. (Dinner, bath, pjs, nurse, bed). Put him in his crib. And didn't go back in until the morning. Gratefully for us he took to it really well. He cried 45 minutes. Then went to sleep and not another peep until 7am the next day.
But I will send you more because I know how stinky this situation is!

Re: I'm at the end of my rope-MON PM UPDATE
In agreement with everyone else....but if she's tugging on her ears she may have an ear infection.....just a thought based on experience with ear infections in the past.....
Good luck!!! It eventually comes together....
