Why don't you look into a wood burning stove? There's a thread on that on this home board.

I was worried... esp after we got a $519 oil bill last month!! Thankfully, we are switching to gas on June 2nd!! I just hope it isn't as bad or doesn't get as bad as oil prices!

We are getting a pellet stove this summer for just that reason...there is no way we will be able to afford heating our house next year even if prices stay as they are...which they won't...

Re: In honor of oil trading today at $132 per barrel...
we kept the thermostat at 61 the whole winter pretty much...it was cold certain nights, but our March 2nd fill-up at 420 bucks is still 3/4's full.
we will do gas in the next few years and we know the line exists on our block, but we'll have to wait to do all the duct work for when we do major renovations.

Get a pellet stove. We did it last year in anticipation of this and it was the BEST thing we have ever done. Our oil bills this winter were around $100 a month. Our house was also warmer than it's ever been with oil.. because we don't worry about buring oil and keeping the house at a lower temp. I can't say enough good about these things....

Same as us....We have no other option. I am glad we did upgrade our burner though bc this winter we burned a lot less but made up for the $$ bc of the high prices of oil

I highly recommend converting to natural gas if you have the option. We converted last summer and saved a ton this winter.

For those of you who can't get gas...neither can we. You do have the option of a pellet stove or propane gas stove/fireplace.

my stove is on propane which I guess saves something. My fireplace is a non-working fireplace.

Actually, what I meant was they sell stoves for heating that burn propane...and if you have a non-working fireplace you could put a pellet or propane insert into it to heat the house. Just other options for those of us who don't have gas lines available.

Re: In honor of oil trading today at $132 per barrel...
This is a pellet stove.. You can heat anywhere from 500 to 2500 square feet with one. It vents directly outside, no need to build a chimney. And the Pellets run about $300/ton. My friend said he went through about 2 tons last year, but his total oil bill for the winter was $800. Image Attachment(s):
